Vega Archipelago - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Vega Archipelago is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site. A collection of several thousand islands just off the central Norwegian coast, for centuries it was home to small fishing villages, sealers, whalers, and an amazing co-dependent relationship between humans and eider ducks. Although eider ducks are found in various locations around the world, here in the Vega Archipelago humans would protect the ducks from predators, before taking their discarded down feathers and turning them into warm quilts.

A cluster of dozens of islands centred on Vega, just south of the Arctic Circle, forms a cultural landscape of 103,710 ha, of which 6,930 ha is land. The islands bear testimony to a distinctive frugal way of life based on fishing and the harvesting of the down of eider ducks, in an inhospitable environment. Vegatrappa is a great project, making the view from the Ravnfloget mountain easily accessible to most people. The staircase has 1375 steps leading to the top of the mountain, where it meets the two climbing trails from the Ravnfloget Via Ferrata. After only a few steps, you can already enjoy a dramatic view of the sea and the island of Søla.

The Vega Archipelago comprises more than 6500 islands and skerries.
It isn’t easy to survive out here on the islands. It ’s tough for both birds and people! The eider duck uses her down to make a snug, warm place for her chicks, and we’ve been recycling the down for thousands of years to keep us warm on cold, winter nights! In many ways, our survival has changed Nature. If you look around you on the islands, you may see houses we’ve built for the eiders, or perhaps a flowery meadow, which forms after we’ve reaped the grass (for winter fodder for our livestock). Everywhere, you’ll see ”signs” of what we call ”a living landscape”.
That is exactly why we have the right to call ourselves a World Heritage!
