Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel: Public bicycles
In this episode of our new series “Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel” we’ll show you how to zip around Moscow by renting a public bike.
In this episode Tim has been very busy on his computer...scrolling through Facebook, and now he has just 40 minutes to get to the U.S. Embassy for a new passport - but will he make it before it closes? Since the streets are clogged with traffic and the Metro is far away he only has one option: Figuring out how to rent and use a public bicycle

Bike Riding in Moscow: Not For the Faint-Hearted | The Moscow Times
This year, the annual bike parade advocating for better conditions for bike riders in Moscow was not allowed by the authorities. Instead, the city government organized a festival that was more of a party than a demonstration for bike rights.
We took a ride with Valery Larionov, a bike activist, to see how safe and comfortable it is to ride around Moscow's city center.
Put on your helmet and enjoy the ride.

Entering in Moscow by bicycle is a HELL.
... Maybe there are secret ways to access Moscow for people and not cars... good luck trying to find it between railways, kilometers of road with no bridges or tunnels for pedestrians, giant industrial areas (entrance forbidden), or neighbourhoods totally isolated (unless you have a car).
This was a Sunday afternoon in July, so there quite less traffic than a normal day. Still, chek the speed, the quantity and the concept of safety distance for most of the drivers...
Now my chest hurts after breathing all that shit...

Unfortunately the phone App is only in Russian. I think, most of the interface is only in Russian on the terminals as well.
You need to register one time. After that you can do a daily, monthly or season subscription and take a bike from any station and leave it there. Its 150 Rub for the day subscription and the first 30 min of riding are free. The bikeride can be paid by credit card or even the Troika card, which is the metro card used for public transport.
The bike ride can even be faster than a metro ride. It certainly saves you time, when the roads are clogged during rush hour. But of course you will arrive in a bit of sweat. Riding on sidewalks is allowed / accepted in Moscow. Riding on the street gives a bit of stress, because the cars and buses, around you, are not used to bicycles. I've been frequently pushed away by trolley buses, for example.
Nevertheless, velobike is a valid option and alternative. I'm even thinking about taking a season subscription now.
