A velvet painting is a type of painting distinguished by the use of velvet (usually black velvet) as the support, in place of canvas, paper, or similar materials. The velvet provides an especially dark background against which colors stand out brightly.
Velvet painting is an ancient technique, and took on a new popularity in the United States in the late 20th century.
Black velvet paintings originated in Kashmir, the homeland of the fabric. These original paintings were generally religious and portrayed the icons of the Caucasus region which were painted by Russian Orthodox priests. Marco Polo and others introduced black velvet paintings to Western Europe, and some of these early works still hang in the Vatican Museums.
The paintings are widely sold in rural America, and frequently have kitsch themes. They often depict images of Elvis Presley (see Velvet Elvis), Dale Earnhardt, John Wayne, Jesus, Native Americans, dogs playing poker, wolves, and cowboys, and the colors are often bright and vivid to contrast the dark velvet. They can also include more exotic or avant-garde themes.
Ciudad Juárez, Mexico was a center of velvet painting in the 1970s. A displaced Georgia farmboy, Doyle Harden, was the pioneer who created an enormous factory, where velvets were turned out by the thousands by artists sitting in studios. One artist would paint one piece of the picture, then slide the velvet along to the next artist, who would add something else. Velvet paintings mass-produced by hand in this manner fueled the boom in velvet paintings in the 1970s in the United States. Edgar Leeteg has been called the father of American black velvet kitsch.
In Portland, Oregon, a museum devoted solely to velvet paintings, the Velveteria, operated from late 2005 to January 2010. It reopened in December 2013 in the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, Calif.

USA : ELVIS MEMORABILIA EXHIBITION TO VISIT LONDON AND TOKYO
English/Nat
A collection of memorabilia linked to the King of Rock and Roll opened in Los Angeles this weekend and is preparing to head overseas.
More than one thousand items owned by Elvis Presley's family, friends and associates are on display in Los Angeles, California, and are scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder in Las Vegas and L-A during the first week in October.
The Presley memorabilia preview will also be displayed in London and Tokyo later this month.
Auctioneers Butterfield and Butterfield of Los Angeles in association with Bonhams of London are conducting the largest auction of Elvis Presley Memorabilia ever offered from private collections.
More than one thousand items owned by The King's family, friends and associates are on display.
Everything from concert suits to cars are being shown this weekend in Los Angeles.
All items will be sold to the highest bidders at auctions in Las Vegas and Los Angeles next month.
The Presley memorabilia will be displayed internationally in London and Tokyo September 22-24.
Donna Humphrey, the Associate Vice President of Butterfield and Butterfield, talked about the international auction.
SOUNDBITE: It is going to London and Tokyo as well we are doing this with Bonhams of London and they have had a tremendous response in Europe so we hope to have bidding from around the world.

Elvis's infamous gold tree necklace is up for auction. As is his Mobil credit card.
Many photographs of Elvis with his friends are also on display.
SOUNDBITE: His music is timeless. There seems to be just an aura and a phenomena, there are people who are twenty who are really dedicated fans. He brought himself up from nowhere and made himself into a mega international superstar.
SUPERCAPTION: Donna Humphrey, Associate Vice President, Butterfield and Butterfield.
Highlights of the auction span the life and career of Elvis Presley.
Elvis's white 1966 Rolls Royce will be offered.
The sale will also feature the final auction of memorabilia from Jimmy Velvet's Elvis Presley Museum Collection. Velvet is a longtime friend of the King.
SOUNDBITE: On the Rolls Royce, we looked for it for a while, and it popped up. It was funny, Elvis had bought it from Michael Landon, Michael had it for four years and sold it to Elvis at a football game and Elvis eventually gave it to Charlie Rich and we bought it from Charlie McLean the country singer.

Butterfield and Butterfield expects to exceed its two point three million dollar auction record set during the historic sale of the Elvis Presley Museum Collection in 1994.
SOUNDBITE:There was something magical about him that if I could understand and I could bottle I'd be a millionaire today.
SUPERCAPTION: Dick Grub, Friend of Elvis and Collector.
Whatever his magic, Elvis's memory still lives on.
