Venetian Pool Historic Hideaway in Coral Gables, Florida | Travel and Leisure
Join me for a relaxing swim as I slow down, soak in, and relax in the Venetian Pool historic hideaway with soothing waterfalls, hidden grotto, and Instagram worthy bridges.
What makes this pool so special? It is made entirely from coral rock, (marine limestone), and it is filled with natural spring water from a nearby aquifer and is reportedly close to 80 degrees in this lush tropical hideaway. This is the largest freshwater pool in the United States.
Built in 1923 in the Mediterranean Revival style inspired by Spanish, Italian, and Venetian architecture. Located in the charming Miami suburb of Coral Gables, this architectural influence is found throughout the surrounding neighborhoods.
The children’s play area is only 2 feet deep, with more areas for 3-4 foot depth. The deep end starts at 5 feet and gets as deep as 8 feet below the waterfall.
In decades past, the pool was drained completely for scheduled performances by the Miami Symphony, taking advantage of the quarry's natural acoustic qualities.
The small parking lot fills up quickly. If you are staying nearby, it may be possible to walk, or some hotels offer complementary bikes for riding around the town of Coral Gables. Lyft and Uber are also great options to reach the pool.
No food or drinks allowed near the pool, but there is a small food court and seating area for snacks and beverages.
The Venetian Pool is the perfect place to relax and refresh after enjoying the Miami nightlife.

Florida Travel: Dip into History at the Venetian Pool, Coral Gables
There are few pools in the country that can rival the massive size of this aquifer-fed beauty, and certainly none can match its storied past.
Many swimming pools these days are never completely drained. But the mammoth, historic city pool in Coral Gables – 820,000 gallons, about 40 times the size of a large home pool – is emptied and filled every night during the busy swimming season, when residents and tourists flock to the cool waters fed by the Biscayne aquifer.

The Venetian pool Miami
As a traveler we are always looking for ideas of interesting places to visit. It was always a dream for us to visit The venetian pool in Miami , Fl. This was constructed in the city of Coral Gables around the 1920s. Originally sitting on top of a quarry arquictet and founder George derrick created an illusion of distinctive Venetian pool. This natural lagoon water flows from underneath the coral caves. A bridge, waterfall, palm trees and sand make this municipal pool one of the largest in the United States.
My wife and I decide to take the challenge to travel to Florida to visit this incredible pool. Anyone that seems picture knows who special and unreal feels. We decide to make a 48 hr trip to Miami on the cheap. We bought affordable Airline tickets from united with restrictions built making the reservations under $100 each trip. Once we had the air ticket we secure a deal l in hopper for a nice hotel for around $140 dollar a night. Because of accumulating enough travel point thru my credit card. I was also able to afford a 2 day car rental at no cost. The initial one day trip to the Venetian pool was well organized.
Just in flights and hotel we probably spend about $130 for both on flights
About $140 on a hotel stay.
We also were able to afford a good meal from the chain restaurant call campo campero. This is a chain restaurant that focuses on fried and grilled chicken recipes at affordable prices.
Making the first day of the trip with total expense of around 300 dollars, not a bad deal hugh?

The Venetian Pool - Coral Gables, FL
The Venetian Pool was opened in 1924. A limestone rock quarry in the early 1920's. Each day, the 820,000 gallons of water is drained and replenished from a well and natural spring. Once a dream of George Merrick, that dream came true and puts smiles on all the thousands of visitors it receives each year. THANK YOU, Denman Fink & Phinias Paist, (artist and architect that designed and crafted the pool)

Coral Gables - The Venetian Pool (2013)
Music: All That We Are - Creel Commission
The Venetian Pool is an aquatic facility unlike any other in the country. It has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, and is still one of the main tourist attractions for those visiting the City of Coral Gables.
The pool was created in 1923 from a coral rock quarry, where much of the original coral rock was used to border and further accentuate the pool. It also features two large historic lookout towers, with a view to the City Beautiful.
The 820,000 gallon pool is fed with spring water from an underground aquifer. In the spring and summer seasons, the pool is filled and drained daily!
Of course the aquifer is not the only feature that enhances a visitor's experience. There are two waterfalls that provide a scenic backdrop as well as the cave-like grottos which provide a fun experience for swimmers.
The Venetian Pool's beauty is further accentuated by its loggias, porticos, palm trees and signature bridge. It truly is an unforgettable experience!
The Venetian pool was opened in 1924 as the Venetian Casino, which was part of the Grand Plan George Merrick had for the City of Coral Gables. His vision for his city was to embody a sense of true hometown living.
George Merrick envisioned creating a City with Mediterranean features such as grand entrances, plazas, and Mediterranean style homes. The limestone which was taken from the Venetian Pool quarry pit was used to create some of the original neighboring buildings.
With the efforts of George Merrick, artist Denman Fink, and architect Phineas Paist, the pool was transformed into a paradise that today is included in the National Register of Historic Places, the only swimming pool to have such a designation.
Venetian PoolIn its early days, the Venetian Casino was the destination for many celebrities, including such movie stars as Johnny Weismuller and Esther Williams. The pool was also a site for orchestrated concerts, in which the pool was emptied of its 820,000 gallons of water and the orchestra would perform on the pool bottom. Many years later in 2001, this scene was duplicated as a concert which was held on the bottom of the pool to commemorate the City of Coral Gables' 75th Birthday.
In 1989, the pool's first historical renovation was completed. Between 2009 and 2010 the pool underwent a second renovation. However, the pool's original rich history can still be observed as you walk through the entry fountain room and gaze upon its historic photographs, reminding patrons of an era long gone by.

Venetian Pool, Miami
The Venetian Pool is the only swimming pool on the National Register of Historic Places. Venetian Pool, opened in 1924 as Venetian Casino.” The pool was founded by George Merrick as part of the development of Coral Gables, which was created in Mediterranean Revival style. The Venetian Pool has gone through several phases. A large additional island was created to allow Venetian style gondolas to dock alongside though the gondolas were later removed. A high diving platform was constructed above the grand waterfall and was also later torn down. Early in its history, the pool was regularly drained completely to permit the Miami Symphony to perform in it, taking advantage of the quarry's natural acoustic qualities. In 2001, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Coral Gables, the pool was once again drained for an orchestral performance.
The pool occupies a shallow quarry displacing some 820,000 US gallons (3,100 m3) of fresh water daily from artesian wells, making it the largest freshwater pool in the United States.
