Heraklion, the fascinating capital of Crete - top attractions | Greece, land of myths
A buzzing seaside city bridging the gap between yesterday and today, the capital of Crete has a plethora of holiday experiences to offer
Heraklion is a multifaceted seaside city and a major urban centre. Come and discover the many world-renowned attractions it has to offer. The Heraklion of yesterday; the Venetian harbour and walls, ideal for a nostalgic walk through history. And the vibrant city of today; city squares and pedestrian walkways filled with a youthful energy, raki (the local drink), ouzo, gourmet restaurants and luxury hotels.
Along with these, a number of excellent museums and one of the largest aquariums in Europe. Just beyond the city limits, explore the much vaunted Knossos, one of the most significant sights on the island and in Greece; the most important centre of the Minoan civilisation, the palace of King Minos and the home of the myth of the Minotaur.
What to do in Heraklion
Heraklion: a seaside city, full of life and history
The historic Candia, the city of Heraklion with its Venetian port is a modern capital with dozens of options in culture, accommodation, dining and entertainment. It is a city where you can enjoy the pleasures of today and the beauty of yesterday. Walk and savour the sights, like the impressive church of Agios Titos in the square, originally built by Byzantine emperor Nikephorus Phocas in 961.
Admire the Armeria (armory) next to St Titus, and The Loggia (City Hall) with its 82 metopes and beautiful arcades. Directly opposite you’ll find the lively Morosini (Leondaria) square with its lions’ head fountain. Moving on to Eleftherias Square, the striking feature here is an impressive building housing the Prefecture of Heraklion and the Law Courts.
The Venetians on the pier
At the entrance of Heraklion’s Venetian harbour, the Koules Fortress (also known as Castello Del Molo or Rocca al Mare) gazes proudly out to sea. It was built by the Venetians and took its final form between the years of 1523-1540. It has been repaired several times and during the Ottoman rule it served as a prison. Across the harbour the Venetian shipyards make for a romantic backdrop.
The walls of the old city: the threshold between past and present
Walking along the walls, you will see how beautiful this city looks from this vantage point. You’ll pause in small shady parks and admire the genius of the famous Venetian architect, Michele Sanmicheli, who designed the walls and bastions more than 400 years ago. The Venetian walls demarcating today’s old town were indeed an impressive feat of engineering for the time, making Heraklion the best-fortified city in the Mediterranean.
Cretaquarium: the wonders of the sea
Sharks, seahorses, jellyfish; you’ll be astonished by the variety of Mediterranean marine life on display. Cretaquarium, which includes 60 tanks with 1.7 million litres of seawater, is one of the largest aquariums in Europe. The aquarium is home to more than 4,000 creatures of all different colours, shapes and sizes. Crete knows how to surprise and amaze you!
A feast of flavours and pleasures
Enjoy dishes from the celebrated Cretan cuisine at one of the city’s many cafes, tavernas and restaurants, accompanied by traditional music, fine wines and tsikoudia (Crete’s famous firewater). Then move on to designer cafes, trendy bars, hip hangouts and pulsating dance clubs that stay open till dawn. The dining and entertainment options in Heraklion are infinite.
Where you’ll stay
Choose from the modern city hotels and boutique hotels among the centre’s historic buildings, surrounded by exceptional restaurants and bars with spectacular views to the Venetian port. Large, modern resorts may also be found at the city’s nearby beaches.
Beaches with character and charm
Take your pick: Ammoudara, a big beautiful beach just west of the city, completely organised with dozens of resorts. Tobruk, in the east, has lots of restaurants, hotels, and cafes. The Arena or Red Hani, a beach enjoyed by a young crowd, features hotels, shops, restaurants and beach bars playing music.
At the port of the city dominate the Venetian constructions, such as the Koules Fortress (Rocca al Mare), the ramparts and the arsenal.
Also, many fountains of the Venetian-era are preserved, such as the Bembo fountain, the Priuli fountain, Palmeti fountain, Sagredo fountain and Morosini fountain (in Lions Square).

A Day in Crete
We wind up our trip to Greece with a brief visit to Crete, home of the ancient Minoan civilization. The archeological site of Knossos, partly 'restored' by Arthur Evans, is a suburban bus ride away from downtown Iraklio (Heraklion) with its historical Venetian shipyards and fortress walls overlooking the blue, blue Aegean see to the north.

Cruiseship Norwegian jade in Kreta Heraklion
Ship
Norwegian Jade is the second of NCL's four Jewel-class ships. She was preceded in 2005 by Norwegian Jewel, then followed in 2006 by Norwegian Pearl, and in 2007 by Norwegian Gem. Each ship has unique amenities, but has a similar exterior and interior design.
Norwegian Jade has a similar exterior appearance to NCL's ships, the Norwegian Star, which entered service in 2001, and the Norwegian Dawn, which entered service in 2002. The interior design and amenities, however, are significantly different and merit Norwegian Jade having a Jewel Class designation.[3]
History
When built, the ship comprised the third in a series of U.S. flagged ships operated by NCL America for the Hawaii market. At a cost of over half a billion U.S. dollars, the Pride of Hawaii was the largest and most expensive U.S. flagged passenger ship ever built. Her design was originally planned to be a sister ship to the Pride of America, utilizing parts from the Northrop Grumman Shipyard and the failed Project America series of ships. Later NCL America decided that it would be better to enlarge the Pride of Hawaii and make her a sister ship to the Norwegian Jewel. The ship was christened in Los Angeles by Senator Daniel Inouye.[4] After delivery to NCL, she joined the Pride of America and Pride of Aloha as the final ship in the NCL America fleet.
On April 11, 2007 NCL announced that Pride of Hawaii would be withdrawn from the Hawaiian market in February, 2008 and subsequently redeployed to Europe for the summer. In a press release, NCL's CEO, Colin Veitch, cited substantial 2006 losses that had been caused by downward pricing pressure in the Hawaii market following the addition of Pride of Hawaii to the fleet, as well as an increase in the amount of foreign flagged competition entering the Hawaii market from the west coast as the reason for the vessels redeployment. NCL did not commit to sending Pride of Hawaii back to Hawaii until the other NCL America vessels reach an acceptable level of profitability.[5] On February 4th, 2008, Pride of Hawaii departed from Pier 2 in Honolulu for the last time. After several repositioning cruises, name change, new livery, and an added onboard casino, she made her debut in Europe. Despite the changes, Norwegian Jade maintains much of her original Hawaiian themed decor. Tropical flowers, Hawaiian landscapes, and Hawaiian names are throughout the ship's public spaces. Additionally, Matson menu inspired artwork and a large statue of King Kamehameha grace the main dining room. Norwegian Jade is currently based in Europe year-round. There is little chance that she will ever return to Hawaii, as it would be difficult to regain her former US registration. November 2011: The ship will undergo a dry dock in Marseille in France for two weeks. The ship will receive new carpets and tiling throughout and the hull will be repainted plus the usual annual maintenance will take place.
Future Cruises
The Norwegian Jade will sail many different itineraries starting with a 11-night Mediterranean.[

SEABOURN SPIRIT leaves from terminal venice S.Basilio
The second of Seabourn's intimate, all-suite vessels was launched in November, 1989. Built at the Schichau Seebeckwerft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany, Seabourn Spirit was christened by Aagot Brynestad, the mother of Seabourn founder Atle Brynestad. Seabourn Spirit's 104 ocean-view suites quickly filled with eager travelers, attracted by the unique combination of features that had garnered praises for its sister-ship Seabourn Pride. A variety of lounges and bars, scaled for relaxed sociability, invite guests to get to know each other. Complimentary service of fine wines and spirits contributes to a convivial, club-like atmosphere both here and on the open teak decks, where guests find plenty of comfortable seating both in the sun and shade, and ever-attentive service including full bar service, fresh fruit smoothies and sherbets, mineral water spritzes, frozen towels and even sun lotion and sunglass cleaning. A pair of large whirlpool spas grace the sun deck, and a third one is set all the way forward on Deck 5, perfect for watching the world go by . On certain days in warm water destinations, the captain will anchor off an inviting stretch of beach and deploy the ship's unique fold-out watersports Marina, creating a private island resort where guests can water-ski, sail, swim or snorkel right from the ship. Each Seabourn sister has a main show lounge capable of seating all guests, and an observation lounge with panoramic views on Deck 8 above the navigation bridge. The Club is a popular location for dancing before and after dinner, and into the night. Public rooms on Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Spirit and Seabourn Legend were extensively refurbished in 2010 with a fresh, contemporary flair that keeps them at the top of the rankings in the luxury cruise category.
