THE CODONAS
When this footage was taken in Berlin in 1925, THE CODONAS consisted of Alfredo Codona as flyer, his wife Clara Curtin and his brother Abelardo 'Lalo' Codona as catcher. Alfredo and Lalo were the sons of Edward Codona, a Mexican tenting circus proprietor. Alfredo was born on 7 October 1893, at Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
Alfredo, Lalo and their sister Victoria established the act while on tour with Wirth's circus, Australia, in 1913, with their father as catcher. Returning to the USA, the act appeared for several seasons with Barnum & Bailey's.
In 1916, Alfredo joined the Silbon troupe of 14 aerial artistes. In 1917, in Havana, Cuba, he married another aerialist, Clara Curtin and re-formed the act with Clara and Lalo.
In 1922, Codona achieved the triple somersault, to Lalo's hands, which he included in his act thereafter. The act appeared at the Wintergarten, Berlin in 1925 where this footage was taken and with Bertram Mills' circus, at Olympia, London, in the winter of 1925-26.
From 1927 to 1933, Codona was one of the star attractions of the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey circus. He divorced Clara in the winter of 1927 and married Lilian Leitzel, on a Saturday afternoon between performances in Chicago, in August 1928, thus ending the romantic speculation of newspaper columnists and admirers. For three years this marriage between two of the Ringlings' most prized stars alternated between idyllic romance and furious clashes of temperament. While Leitzel could not completely abandon masculine adulation, Codona, in the Latin tradition insisted that she be his dutiful and adoring spouse. In 1929, when both were at the peaks of their careers, Codona became involved with Vera Bruce, an Australian rider in May Wirth's troupe.
To a performer further down the social hierarchy of the circus than its reigning queen, Leitzel, the theft of Codona represented a personal triumph for Bruce although Codona was still in love with Leitzel. After the 1930 season, Codona took Bruce into his act and trained her as an aerialist as they toured the indoor circuses of the United States during the Ringling winter recess. Leitzel left for engagements in Europe. In Copenhagen one evening in February 1931, a brass swivel on Leitzel's performing rope snapped. She fell 45 feet (about 15 meters) to the concrete floor and died of her injuries a few days later.
Codona was devastated by Leitzel's death. Codona travelled to Europe to collect her ashes. He built a memorial to her, In everlasting memory of my beloved, Leitzel Codona -- Erected by her devoted husband, Alfredo Codona. At first glance, it appears that the statue, titled Reunion, represents an angel embracing Leitzel and taking her to heaven. But if the figure of the woman on the statue is supposed to represent Leitzel, the handsome, wavy-haired angel looks amazingly like Codona, based on the small photograph of him on his grave marker. Perhaps the angel is not really an angel at all, and the statue is merely a representation of Codona's love for Leitzel, with the wings as a symbol of his life as an aerialist. Just below the woman's feet on the statue are carved two small rings -- the same type of rings Leitzel used in her famous swing-over routine. One of the rings is firmly attached to a rope, but above the other ring, the rope is broken.
In September 1932, Codona and Bruce married in San Antonio, Texas. With Leitzel gone, Codona was the most publicised star on the Ringling show apart from Con Colleano. But, less than a year later, Codona tore a shoulder ligament one night while executing a triple somersault. That was the end of his career. Vera revelled in being the wife and co-star of the world's greatest trapeze artist: now she was the wife of a petrol station attendant. Bored, Vera went back on the road as an equestrienne. Codona followed as her 'ostler' but, one night, bitter and disillusioned, he vanished. He drifted from one show to another, sometimes as the manager of a trapeze act, sometimes as an equestrian director. In 1937, Vera sued Codona for a divorce in Long Beach, California charging him with cruelty. They met in a lawyer's office to discuss a property settlement. In the course of the discussion, Codona requested a few moments alone with Vera. As the lawyer closed the door behind him, Codona drew a revolver, shot Bruce five times, mortally wounding her, before putting a bullet through his own head. Codona left a written request that he be buried beside the ashes of his greater love, Leitzel.
