Tubing On The White River In Vermont
River Road in Stockbridge Vermont is currently a State road
The flood waters from Tropical Storm Irene devastated roads all over Vermont, and travel through the town of Stockbridge was particularly hard hit. Vermont State Route 107 is expected to be out of commission until the end of the year. While locals deeply appreciate that River Road was put back into minimal working order by the state, with the help of Casella Construction, we are extremely concerned about the road situation going forward. Officially, the state is not making River Road the RT 107 detour to keep excess traffic off of it, but in reality, the road is seeing many times the normal level of transit. Conveniently enough, if it is not an official detour, then the State has no maintenance responsibility for the roadway, and that load falls on the shoulders of the Stockbridge tax base. Stockbridge has already been hit hard by this natural disaster, and has very limited resources with which to recover. The extra responsibility for maintaining a road that is carrying state traffic, puts an undue resource drain on this small town, which has little recourse for generating the revenue with which to pay for the work, and adds extra workload to the town's two person highway crew, who have other town roads to deal with as well.
If anyone at the state level can please explain to us why this is the best course of action, and how Stockbridge should deal with this fiscal challenge on its own, we would greatly appreciate it.

IN THE WAKE OF TROPICAL STORM IRENE'S WRATH ON NEW ENGLAND-THE VERMONT MOUNTAIN TOWN OF ROCHESTER HAS BEEN CUT OFF COMPLETELY FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD SINCE THIS PAST SUNDAY.
IN SOME SPOTS OF VERMONT THE ONLY WAY TO GET IN IS TO WALK OR HIKE IT-I''M ABOUT TO DO THAT-ABOUT 5 MILES INTO ROCHESTER.
WE WANTED A CLOSER LOOK AT HOW THE PEOPLE THERE WERE SURVIVING
ONLY 1 MILE INTO THE TREK A CONSTRUCTION CREW AND YET ANOTHER ROAD MANFELED BY RUSHING WATERS
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS MASSIVE HOLE WAS A HOME-OWNED BY THE MAILHIOT FAMILY-THE STRUCTURE WILL BE DESTROYED SOON-IT''S BARELY STANDING.
WE DON''T KNOW WHAT TO DO, EVERYTHING THAT WE OWN WAS IN THERE-WE HAVE NO CHECKING ACCOUNT, WE HAVE NO SAVINGS ACCOUT-WE ARE JUST GOING FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT.
JOE''S SON AND HIS FAMILY PULLED UP ON ATV''S TO BEGIN CLEANING THE FAMILY BELONGING OUT OF THE HOME.
IT TOOK A TOLL ON US, ITS LIKE ONE BIG DAY, IT JUST DOESN''T SEEM REAL.
IT''S SOMETHING YOU WOULD SEE IN A MOVIE AND THINK WOULD NEVER COME TRUE.
WITH ABOUT A 4 MILE WALK STILL TO GET INTO ROCHESTER JOE JR. JUST WOULDN''T ALLOW IT.
THAT INCREDIBLE FAMILY WAS NICE ENOUGH TO LOAN ME THEIR FOUR WHEELER TO GET INTO ROCHESTER-THE ONLY OTHER WAY FOR ME TO GET IN WOULD HAVE BEEN TO WALK-I GOT LUCKY.
THE FOUR OR SO MILES INTO TOWN WAS A PICTURE OF NATURE''S FURY
ROADS CUT APART BY VIOLENT WATER
RITA WAS ACCURATE-IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE A SOMETHING FROM A MOVIE.
UPON ARRIVAL-AT THE BASE OF THE TOWN WAS A MEETING
RESIDENTS WERE CONCERNED, THEN SOUNDS OF A HELICOPTER ECHOES THE VALLEY
SOLDIERS LANDED IN TWO CHOPPERS-THEY WERE THE ADVANCE TEAM-TALKING TOLOCALS ABOUT WHERE SUPPLIES AND PROVISION SHOULD BE DROPPED.
DOWN THE ROAD-A MAKE-SHIFT FOOT BRIDGE HAD BEEN BUILT-THIS IS THE ONLY WAY IN AND OUT FOR RESIDENTS.
WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO UTILITIES OF ANY KIND-THE ROAD IS GONE ON BOTH ENDS SO WE ARE BASICALLY TRAPPED ON AN ISLAND HERE.
ACROSS THE STREET, A DISTURBING REALITY
{VOICE-OVER]
COFFINS-SHAKEN FROM THE EARTH -TOSSED AND TOPPLED IN A RUNNING STREAM
THERE WAS ONE BODY THAT WASHED ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS MOSTLY JUST SKELETAL REMAINS AND THEY COVERED THAT UP WITH A TARP FOR TWO DAYS.
THE DRIVE BACK UP THE MOUNTAIN SHOWED MORE DEVASATATION IN EVERY DIRECTION
THESE PEOPLE ARE STRONG BUT SUPPLIES AND ROAD ACCESS NEEDS TO BECOME A RUSHED PRIORITY.
AS WE ARRIVED BACK AT THE MAILHIOT HOME-KIDS RAN ACROSS RUBBLE AS THE ADULTS WEATHERED THEIR FUTURE
THE MAILHIOT FAMILY IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY PEOPLE HURT BY TROPICAL STORM IRENE.

Vermont RT 107 is open for Traffic 12/29/2011
124 days after the White River rose up and peeled sections of RT 107 off of the hillside, and washed it downstream, the road is now open to traffic. Thanks so much to all of the folks who worked to put our highway back on the map.
Happy New Year!

Lindey really liked the debate because it gave her a chance to hear answers to questions from the people. Even though she thinks Obama can improve his energy policy, she especially liked the health care question and Senator Obama's health care plan.

STORYLINE:
Only one flooded Vermont town remained cut off from the outside world Wednesday, but National Guard helicopters were still dropping food and water on storm-ravaged parts of the state as the Eastern seaboard labored to recover from hurricane-turned-tropical-storm Irene.
About 2 million people remained without power in water-logged homes and businesses from North Carolina through New England, where the storm has been blamed for at least 45 deaths in 13 states. Raging floodwaters continued to ravage parts of northern New Jersey on Wednesday morning, even after the state''s rain-swollen rivers crested and slowly receded.
It''s like an island now, said Falguni Purohip, who owns the Killington Pico Motor Inn on Route 4 in Mendon, Vt., where her family and one guest are trapped. We can''t go anywhere.
The town of Rutland is 15 miles away but impossible to reach because of extensive road damage. Purohip said the family has power and plenty of food and water to keep them going, but no way of leaving. Nearly 11 inches of rain triggered the deluges, which knocked houses off their foundations, destroyed covered bridges and caused earthquake-style damage to infrastructure all over Vermont.
We are dropping water, food and supplies, trying to help out folks who are hurting, said U.S. Army national Guard Capt. David Fabricius, who was working at an airport in Fair Haven, Vt., where ground crews were loading provisions onto helicopters that recently had flown missions in Iraq.
Towns around New Jersey resembled large, soggy yard sales Wednesday as residents dragged flood-damaged belongings out onto lawns and into streets still muddied with floodwaters left behind by Hurricane Irene. In Wallington, a heart-shaped, one-square-mile town of about 12,000 residents, large sections remained inundated with floodwaters from the Passaic River, which winds around the small hamlet and hits it from several angles.
Sunday morning the water was only up to here, said resident Kevin O''Reilly, gesturing to where his front lawn used to meet the sidewalk. Sunday afternoon, the waves were bouncing off the house, and that''s when it blew out the basement windows. It sounded like Niagara Falls. It just filled up immediately, and this is what we''ve been dealing with since then.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday night that he saw just extraordinary despair after touring flooded areas.
In Connecticut, the Connecticut River at Hartford crested Tuesday evening at 24.8 feet, the highest level since 1987, according to Nicole Belk, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service, in Taunton, Mass. But she said levees helped minimize flooding in riverside communities.
She said the river could still rise slightly farther south, in Middletown, where some streets and neighborhoods were already experiencing minor flooding.
Vermont''s largest electric utility says a convoy of line crews is headed for the town of Rochester _ where a power substation was completely destroyed by flooding _ to begin work to restore power. Officials say at least five Vermont schools are closed until further notice and about 120 have delayed opening for the school year because of roads or schools ravaged by flooding.
But by Wednesday morning, all but one of the communities _ Wardsboro_ had been reached by ground crews, and emergency management officials were hoping to reach it shortly.
