Olive Ridley Turtles Are Back At Mumbai's Versova Beach After 20 Years
Olive Ridley turtles have a new tale to tell at Mumbai's Versova beach. A group of volunteers engaged in a clean-up of the Versova beach stumbled upon Olive Ridley hatchlings on the wet sand. They called the forest officials and made sure that the turtles walked into the sea without any trouble.

Versova Beach Connected to Juhu Beach - Andheri Mumbai
Just few days before monsoon, This was the fun locals near Versova beach enjoyed the tides beating that pre-monsoon heat. Versova Saat Bungalow beach is connected to Juhu beach Andheri, a famous suburb of Mumbai.
Versova Beach Mumbai
Versova is an upmarket neighbourhood in the Andheri area of Western Mumbai. It is located at 19°7'60N 72°47'60E and is known for its beach and the Versova Fort. It was part of the Portuguese empire up to 1739, when the Portuguese lost this part of their empire to the Marathas.
Versova is originally a small fishing village of the Kolis, situated to the north of the old Mumbai city.
The original name of the village is Vesave, which derives from the Marathi word for rest (as in resting place). In 1694, a fleet of Arabs from Muscat landed in Versova and massacred every person they could find in the village. The village is mentioned in the writings of Gemelli Careri in 1695.
Versova came under the Portuguese rule in the medieval period. The Portuguese constructed the Our Lady of Health Church in Versova, and a number of Kolis converted to Christianity during this period. By 1720, it had emerged as a small town, with a small fort and a growing trade in dry fish. In 1739, the Portuguese lost the area to the Marathas, who strengthened the fort. A British force led by Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Keating defeated the Marathas in 1774.

Versova is an upmarket neighbourhood in the north western Mumbai. It is known for its beach and the Varsova. It was part of Portuguese India, which was part of the Portuguese Empire, until 1739, when the Portuguese lost this part of their empire to the Maratha Empire. The beach of Versova recently undertook a massive clean-up effort, labelled as the largest ever beach clean-up.
In October 2015 Afroz Shah, a young lawyer and environmentalist in Mumbai moved into the area and along with Harbansh Mathur, an 84-year-old who has since passed away, began efforts to clean up the beach. Eventually Shah started a volunteer organization, Versova Residents Volunteers, and encouraged volunteers to show up for weekly dates with the ocean - so called because of how arduous the work was. Each Sunday the volunteers would gather to remove as much trash as possible. Over the course of 21 months, volunteers removed close to 11,684,500 pounds of trash, most of it plastic.
The volunteers also cleaned up 52 public toilets and planted over 50 coconut trees.
The shores of the Versova creek area is surrounded by flourished Mangroves which supports different kinds of organisms especially Molluscs, Crabs and fishes.

The Man Clearing 9,000 Tons of Trash From Mumbai’s Beaches
Over three years ago, Versova beach in Mumbai was little more than a dumping ground for garbage and waste. After witnessing the devastating impact the refuse was having on the ocean, Afroz Shah decided to take matters into his own hands. What started off as a single man’s mission to clean up his favorite childhood beach turned into the world’s largest beach cleanup initiative. As of today, Shah and hundreds of volunteers have cleaned up over nine million kilograms of plastic and waste, with hopes to expand their initiative to other beaches in the future.

“The BMC is taking a lot of time to remove the garbage. If they are saying there is plenty of sand in the garbage we collect, hence the delay, they should segregate it or ask us to do it. Someone will have to do it after all,” Shah said.
When asked why he didn’t complain to the civic authorities about this problem, he said it was not his nature to complaint. “I believe in doing things on my own,” Shah, who practices law, said. “I could have filed a public interest litigation in the high court regarding filth on Versova beach and just waited for something to happen. But I stepped out and began cleaning the beach on my own, not waiting for anyone. I never filed any complaint and will not do it now.
I choose to walk on the path Mahatma Gandhi showed us. Soon, the beach clean-up became a movement. The BMC must figure out a way to make sure the garbage is not piled up outside the Kolis’ homes. Again, I am not blaming anyone. There are many factors and I really felt defeated by the way things were happening,” he said.
Shah insisted that he was not in any “Us vs Them battle”. “I reiterate that I’m not blaming anyone. After 109 weeks, I felt that I failed to make my country a better place. This was a personal journey, there was no NGO or any organisation involved. We were common citizens coming together as volunteers. It’s just that I couldn’t complete this personal journey,” he said.
DRIVE SUSPENDED, NOT CANCELLED
Shah said the Versova beach clean-up was now a citizens’ movement, and it will live on. “I have only suspended it, not cancelled it. If the issues of security and garbage collection are resolved, of course we’ll be back. Why will be stop after 109 weeks. I will be back at the beach for the 110th week. Even if no one is there, I will carry on the mission, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi,” he said.
He said he has been receiving calls to launch the clean-up campaign at other beaches in the city. “Many people have been calling me to start the clean-up campaign at other beaches but I don’t have the time. Citizens must take up the initiative and I am always there to support them. I assure you that I will be back and the clean-up at Versova will continue if the issues are sorted out. I’m sure there are people in the system that will help us, like they have in the past,” an emotional Shah said. On suspending the movement, he termed it a “personal call”.
“We tried to change people’s mind set and we failed. It’s a personal defeat. The goons who heckle us, for instance. Whoever they are, I feel I couldn’t change their mind set. If we wake up at 7 am on a Sunday to clean up a beach and people still heckle at us, it’s not fair. This cause is much bigger than any NGO, company, or individual. People don’t understand it is a bigger mission,” he said.
