What I Eat in a Day | Jackson, WY Edition
Trying to record everything I consume in day is actually challenging because I get too excited and sometimes eat it before even realizing I'm vlogging.
CAUSES-TV: Vertical Farming
The University of the District of Columbia is the only public university in the District of Columbia and the only exclusively urban landgrant university in the United States. In the proud tradition of the Landgrant Universities across the United States, we serve a dual mission of offering academic programs and community outreach programs that help to build capacity, expand economic opportunity, and improve the quality of life of the residents of the District of Columbia. The cornerstone of our capacity building initiatives has always been agriculture. Urban Agriculture is our special niche; because the time last I checked, the District of Columbia has no rural space, which is normally associate with agriculture.
So what does urban agriculture look like? With me today is someone who has been writing the book on urban agriculture. Penny McBride co-founded and started Vertical Harvest in Jackson, Wyoming. The greenhouse occupies 1/10th of an acre at an elevation of more than 6,000 feet, but through hydroponics and a unique stacked design can grow the equivalent produce of 5 acres of farmland using traditional agriculture methods. Vertical Harvest has also designed its greenhouse and operating model to employ people with developmental disabilities.

Last weekend we went down to Wyoming to find a bunch of things to do in Jackson Hole. There are lots of things to do in Wyoming and lots of Wyoming attractions but the little town of Jackson is a highlight.
There are a lot of options for lodging in Jackson. Out of all the hotels and motels, we stayed at the Wort Hotel in downtown Jackson, home to the Silver Dollar bar and the Cowboy Bar.
We hope this helps you decide what to do in Jackson or what to do in Wyoming in general. Have a great trip!

Jackson is a town in the Jackson Hole valley of Teton County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,577 at the 2010 census, up from 8,647 in 2000. It is the county seat of Teton County and is its largest town.
Jackson is the principal town of the Jackson, WY-ID Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Teton County in Wyoming and Teton County in Idaho.
The town derives its name from Jackson Hole, the valley in which it is located.

Meet the Farm Wall™ Laramie Project
This summer, Bright Agrotech is partnering with the City of Laramie to beautify the walls of our downtown area.
The goal? Bring food closer to people while enriching the city, eventually growing Laramie to become not only a more engaging area but the Farm Wall capital of the U.S.
Bright Agrotech is passionate about connecting to this small town community which has given us support and inspired us through the years. With the help of the Laramie Mainstreet Alliance and partnership with innovative Laramie businesses, four Farm Walls have been erected on blank walls in Laramie's downtown. We hope to increase that number in coming summers.
We see this as one catalyst to create change in our community, says Trey Sherwood, historian and a key member of the Laramie Main Street Alliance.
Stay tuned for more update videos throughout the summer to learn about how businesses are using Farm Walls and how the relationship between city and agriculture can be fostered into something more meaningful than a trip to the grocery store. Laramie believes that city walls can be much more colorful than a surface of cinderblock or brick. These walls grow food.

Looking to the past for clues on the future of energy
An engineer and a historian discuss how technology and human behavior are shaping the sustainable energy revolution.
In the first in a series of events exploring the intersection of engineering and humanities perspectives on common themes, Stanford faculty members John O. Dabiri, professor of civil and environmental engineering and of mechanical engineering, and Ian Morris, professor of classics, engaged in a moderated discussion about the future of sustainable energy. The two spoke at length about their different viewpoints on a central question: What can we expect the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy to look like in light of new technologies and age-old human behavior?
Morris, whose most recent book explored the role of energy in shaping inequality and violence over the past 20,000 years, said that the three critical periods of energy transition – from foraging to farming to fossil fuel societies – have resembled the messy process of natural selection. “Changing our behavior is a process driven by the same forces that drive biological evolution,” he said. “We respond positively to things that allow us to do what we want to do in an easier way without taking too many risks. So if you have electric cars that cost less and run on less than internal combustion engines, then people will buy them. If you don’t, they won’t.”
Dabiri, whose research focuses on new ways to capture wind energy, said that engineers should think a little more about the context of their work – how renewable energy solutions will look different in Palo Alto than they will in Mumbai – as well as how a deeper understanding of human nature could help motivate people to change their behavior. “We often as engineers come in to the problem thinking if we come up with a cool enough gadget, people will flock to it. That might be true of the iPhone,” he said. “Until we come up with the iPhone equivalent for climate change, for solar energy, for wind energy, it’s going to be an uphill battle for massive adoption of these technologies.”

China's Ice City Harbin 2019
China's northern ice city of Harbin has built its tourism sector into a 10-billion-U.S. dollar-level industry, with its renown as one of the country's top winter destinations continuing to draw in huge numbers of visitors.
As the capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Harbin has been making good use of its ecological resources including ice and snow, and forests and wetlands, in an effort to build itself into a top-notch, all-season tourist location, while also being a popular international tourist attraction in winter.
Tourism became Harbin's second 10-billion-U.S. dollar-level industry in 2016. The city received more than 77.12 million tourists in 2017 and made a total revenue of over 117 billion yuan (around 17 billion U.S dollars).
It has gained international attention for its increasingly popular winter extravaganza, the International Ice and Snow Festival, which features elaborate ice sculptures, competitions and a plethora of winter sports.
Every winter, visitors from home and overseas flock to Harbin, increasing consumption, creating jobs and greatly stimulating the local economy.
Diverse winter activities have been appearing since Harbin held its first ice lantern fair in 1963, with the first ice and snow festival following in 1985.
The Harbin Ice and Snow World, a theme park with snow sceneries and magnificent ice sculptures, was built by the local government in 1999 to welcome in the new millennium.
Covering an area of 800,000 square meters, the park has helped advance ice and snow art in China into a major stage which features elaborate modern designs and mechanization, and continues to impress visitors from all around the world.

- reduce eye strain

Vertical farming is the practice of producing food and medicine in vertically stacked layers, vertically inclined surfaces and/or integrated in other structures (such as in a skyscraper, used warehouse, or shipping container). The modern ideas of vertical farming use indoor farming techniques and controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) technology, where all environmental factors can be controlled. These facilities utilize artificial control of light, environmental control (humidity, temperature, gases...) and fertigation. Some vertical farms use techniques similar to greenhouses, where natural sunlight can be augmented with artificial lighting and metal reflectors.Hydroponic systems can be lit by LEDs that mimic sunlight. Software can ensure that all the plants get the same amount of light, water and nutrients. Proper management means that no herbicides or pesticides are required.
