About the Film:
This short-film highlights the volunteer experience at the Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF)- a 23-hectare not-for-profit centre dedicated to the rehabilitation, education and sanctuary for vervet monkeys located in Tzaneen, South Africa. VMF is a member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) and The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).
With no government funding, VMF relies heavily on its volunteers to assist in the day-to-day operations required to care for its 500+ monkeys, as well as helping to run its community outreach programs.

Our Time Volunteering At The Vervet Monkey Foundation In South Africa
We had the amazing opportunity to volunteer at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in Tzaneen, South Africa and had a wonderful experience! We tried to document as much as possible to show you all the great work the foundation is doing to help these monkeys. From meeting friends from all over the world, to helping these monkeys hands-on, volunteering here was truly a memorable experience. Shanti-Ray, juvenile blinded by pellet gun meets monkey foster mums at Vervet Monkey Foundation
Shanti-Ray a 1 year old vervet monkey was shot by a pellet gun near Macadamia Village, Tzaneen, Limpopo. He was rescued by the Vervet Monkey Foundation who gave him a second chance at life. He had been shot in the head and his arm. Unfortunately the pellet couldn't be removed from his head as it was too deep which left him blind. His prognosis was poor but he survived and is now living with 2 monkey foster mums Frenchie & Shasta at the Vervet Monkey Foundation. La Pequenita - vervet monkey released after recovery Vervet Monkey Foundation
La Pequenita meaning 'the little one' was found circling in the road and fell in the Tzaneen Dam, she was suspected to have been hit by a car and suffered from severe head trauma on arrival. TZANEEN SA
Tzaneen is a large town situated in the Mopani district of the Limpopo province in South Africa. It is in a fertile region with tropical and subtropical agriculture taking place in a 20,000 km² region. About 650 000 people reside within a 30km radius, with the town itself holding a population of around 30,000.
There are different theories to were the name comes from and range from the Sotho words tsaneng (gathering place) to tsana (basket of hills).
The distance from Tzaneen to Johannesburg is approximately 420km.
The are many tourist attractions to the small town of Tzaneen, including: The Beautiful Tzaneen Dam, Magoebaskloof, Haenertsburg, and the Pekoe View Tea Estate. The town is also situated close to a number of game reserves and the town often serves as a thoroughfare for tourists on their way to other tourist destinations in the province. The well-known Kruger National Park, for instance, is situated approximately 100km away.

Injured Baby Monkey Meets “Foster Mom” & Their Instant Bond Will Have You Tearing Up
A mother’s love is a powerful thing, even for other species.
When animal rescuers brought a baby monkey to the Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF) in Tzaneen, South Africa, they weren’t sure if she would make it or not. The baby, whom rescuers called “Jerry,” had suffered a terribly traumatic accident during which her mother was killed. Jerry survived with a broken foot and damaged tail, but as an orphan, she stood little chance of surviving in the wild.

Thankfully the workers at VMF are well versed in treating injured and orphaned monkeys, and they quickly made a plan to rehabilitate the tiny baby monkey and get her into the loving arms of a foster mother as soon as possible.

VMF is a sanctuary for orphaned, injured, and abused vervet monkeys. Each day they work to rehabilitate these monkeys into viable family units, or troops so that they can be reintroduced into the wild. “They shouldn’t be in homes, they shouldn’t be in cages. We want to get them back where they belong,” said one VMF worker.
When the VMF staff began caring for Jerry, they knew right away that she was emotionally traumatized. She was confused and in pain, and they went to work immediately to get her back on the road to wellness.

The staff members nursed Jerry tenderly, setting her broken foot in a cast and giving her lots of hugs and snuggles to help her feel safe and secure. After just two and a half weeks, they were able to remove her bandages and introduce her to some other orphaned baby monkeys.

Jerry loved meeting new friends, quickly becoming the “mother hen” to all of her playmates. For a little bitty monkey, she has a huge personality! Her carers said that if she could spend all her time playing or swaddled in blankets, eating mangoes, she would be one happy baby.

“These animals, even though they’ve had a really rough start in life, we’re able to provide a second chance.”
Finally, just a few weeks after she had entered the rehab facility, Jerry was ready to meet her new mom. The staff selected a fully grown vervet monkey called Mrs. Gold to be Jerry’s mom. As soon as Mrs. Gold set eyes on Jerry, she knew exactly what to do. She reached for the baby and pulled her into a loving embrace!

Mrs. Gold had fostered babies before, and her parenting style provides these sweet babies with the perfect mixture of nurture and discipline to get them ready to join their new family, called a troop.
After just three months with her new mother, Jerry and Mrs. Gold were ready to move into the wildlife area of the sanctuary.

As soon as mother and daughter got outside, they leapt into the trees and began to play and frolic like the wild monkeys that they are. Watching them in their natural habitat is truly breathtaking! Jerry is now a member of a family, once again.
We just love a happy ending!

Vervet monkey caught in a snare released back with his troop in the wild
Vader a wild monkey with one hand was caught in a snare, he managed to drag himself to the Vervet Monkey Foundation where he was found, the snare was removed and his wounds were treated. He was released on the 4th November 2013 back with his troop in the wild where he was found. Snares cause horrific pain and suffering. Three Orphan Baby Vervet Monkeys Are Rescued - Vervet Forest - S2 Ep.5
Vervet Forest - Season 2 - Episode 5 - At the Vervet Monkey Foundation, a non profit animal sanctuary in South Africa three new orphan baby vervet monkeys arrive. A very young little girl named Dixie who was hit by a car and is just a few days old. A sassy little lady named Foxy and a girl named Paloma who was found by a dog and in critical condition.

Note that the babies are kept in a special enclosure Disneyland during the day along with two juvenile monkeys Hoppy and Mistletoe who teach them how to behave like monkeys. Most of the babies are traumatised having been with their mothers when they were shot and killed by hunters - the babies left for dead.
