From Distilleries to Stills: Prohibition in Peoria
Peoria was the whiskey capital of the world. Alcohol production was a business that meant a huge income for the distillery owners, who in turn made a huge contribution to the community in the form of culture, buildings and sculptures—some of which still stand today. It also provided jobs, not just in the alcohol industry but for a myriad of businesses that supported the distilleries. The production of whiskey and beer was a source of important taxes for both the federal and local governments. But times change, and in January of 1920, it all came to an end.
This original WTVP production looks at the causes of Prohibition, its effects on Peoria, and the legacy left behind. It also shares a few stories of the more lawless and colorful activities that it inspired.
RUMRUNNER'S PARADISE
New Year's Eve, 1915 was a party to end all parties in Spokane. At the stroke of midnight, every saloon in the state would be out of business. This would be the last call before statewide prohibition would be enacted, closing the taps four years before the rest of the nation. But even as revelers saluted the new dry year, a lucrative wet underworld was forming between Spokane and Canada.
Scabby the Rat's Australian debut
At yesterday’s #CUB55 rally we unveiled Scabby the Rat. The giant inflatable rodent was born in Chicago in 1991 and first assisted the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers as a “bigger than life” symbol for picket lines. He made his first appearance in the UK in 2013 at the Grangemouth Oil Refinery dispute where he was accused of “trying to portray (a company director) as a nasty boss, a nasty capitalist … someone evil.” Heaven forbid! And now, in 2016, he has made his Australian debut at the #CUB55 #BattleOfTheBrewery.
Many business have tried to stop Scabby in court over the years, but they have always failed. He is now protected by the U.S. First Amendment. In a 2014 case, a New York district judge ruled that “the defendants’ peaceful use of a stationary, inflatable rat to publicise a labour protest is protected by the First Amendment.”
We are proud to have this icon of the international labour movement on site at CUB to assist in the #BattleOfTheBrewery. You can find out more about Scabby the Rat’s origins and history here:

SUSAN LINDAUER: Indicted and imprisoned on The Patriot Act. The second non-Arab American indicted.
CRIME: Speaking to staff of Sen. John McCain about Iraq and Libya.
As a U.S. Intelligence Asset, Susan Lindauer covered anti-terrorism at the Iraqi Embassy in New York from 1996 up to the invasion. Independent sources have confirmed that she gave advance warning about the 9/11 attack. She also started talks for the Lockerbie Trial with Libyan diplomats. Shortly after requesting to testify before Congress about successful elements of Pre-War Intelligence, Lindauer became one of the first non-Arab Americans arrested on the Patriot Act as an Iraqi Agent. She was accused of warning her second cousin, White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and Secretary of State Colin Powell that War with Iraq would have catastrophic consequences. Gratis of the Patriot Act, her indictment was loaded with secret charges and secret evidence. She was subjected to one year in prison on Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas without a trial or hearing, and threatened with indefinite detention and forcible drugging to shut her up. After five years of indictment without a conviction or guilty plea, the Justice Department dismissed all charges five days before President Obama’s inauguration.
Lindauer has written a book Extreme Prejudice: The Terrifying Story of the Patriot Act and the Cover Ups of 9/11 and Iraq about her experience.

Sheldon Peck, Portrait of an Ordinary Man in Extraordinary Times tells the story of Lombard, Illinois’ most famous son, 19th century primitive portrait artist, radical abolitionist, progressive temperance and public education advocate and conductor on the underground railroad, Sheldon Peck.
Sheldon Peck, Portrait of an Ordinary Man in Extraordinary Times, is a story infused with a humanity that resonates today. Largely forgotten in the century after his death in 1868, Sheldon Peck and his legacy have seen a revival and renewed appreciation that recognizes his talent, passion, courage and vision. It's a story of American western expansion in the days of manifest destiny and how one man embraced the important issues of his day and was not afraid to speak out or get personally involved when and where he saw injustice.
This documentary was a labor of love. In August, 2018 I moved my 11 year old video production business a few miles east, from Glen Ellyn to Lombard, Illinois, the town were we have lived since the early 1990's, raised our three children and actively participated in church, school and little leagues.
Julie (my spouse) and I were having dinner at a new restaurant, Babcock's Grove, in the old Lombard Hotel on the corner of St. Charles Road and Park, Avenue. It was a beautiful summer evening. The downtown was buzzing with vitality. Seated at our outdoor table we were remarking out energized Lombard's downtown had become. The new $9.7 million dollar Metra Station and pedestrian tunnel, street lighting, restaurants and creative businesses made for a place people wanted to congregate.
That's when I saw building owner Tom Smith's 2 South Park Avenue office-for-rent sign on the door next to Babcock's grove. One thing led to another and I wound up moving into Lombard's oldest commercial building (1858) in one of the coolest office spaces in DuPage County. God is good.
Being a hopeless history buff and the producer of many historical documentaries, I was looking for a way to introduce my video production business to my new/old home town. A google search revealed that the story of Sheldon Peck, had never been told in the documentary format. A phone call to the Lombard Historical Society led to an introduction with Executive Director Sarah Richardt who enthusiastically endorsed the idea and then proceeded to assist us at every turn as we told the story and tracked down experts and images.
Thanks to all those who helped put this story together. Check the credits for a listing.
