Savannah, Georgia - Savannah River Ship Traffic HD (2017)
The Port of Savannah is a major U. S. seaport located at Savannah, Georgia. Its facilities for oceangoing vessels line both sides of the Savannah River approximately 18 miles (29 km) from the Atlantic Ocean. Operated by the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), the Port of Savannah competes primarily with the Port of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina to the northeast, and the Port of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida to the south. The GPA operates one other Atlantic seaport in Georgia, the Port of Brunswick, located at Brunswick, Georgia. There are three interior ports linked to the Gulf of Mexico, Port Bainbridge and Port Columbus, and one linked to the Port of Savannah by rail in Cordele, Georgia.
Between 2000 and 2005 alone, the Port of Savannah was the fastest-growing seaport in the United States, with a compounded annual growth rate of 16.5 percent (the national average is 9.7 percent). On July 30, 2007, the GPA announced that the Port of Savannah had a record year in fiscal 2007, becoming the fourth-busiest and fastest-growing container terminal in the U.S. The GPA handled more than 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of container traffic during fiscal 2007– a 14.5 percent increase and a new record for containers handled at the Port of Savannah. In the past five years, the port's container traffic has jumped 55 percent from 1.5 million TEU handled in fiscal 2003 to 2.3 million TEU in fiscal 2007. By 2014, container traffic was up to 3 million TEU.
In response to the growth in traffic at both Savannah and the Port of Charleston, the Jasper Ocean Terminal, to be the largest port in the country when it is completed, is planned to be built upriver on the Savannah River by the mid 2020s.
Savannah is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia and is the county seat of Chatham County. Established in 1733 on the Savannah River, the city of Savannah became the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. A strategic port city in the American Revolution and during the American Civil War, Savannah is today an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport. It is Georgia's fifth-largest city and third-largest metropolitan area.
Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors to its cobblestone streets, parks, and notable historic buildings: the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA), the Georgia Historical Society (the oldest continually operating historical society in the South), the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (one of the South's first public museums), the First African Baptist Church (one of the oldest African-American Baptist congregations in the United States), Temple Mickve Israel (the third oldest synagogue in America), and the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in America).
Savannah's downtown area, which includes the Savannah Historic District, the Savannah Victorian Historic District, and 22 parklike squares, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated by the U.S. government in 1966). Downtown Savannah largely retains the original town plan prescribed by founder James Oglethorpe (a design now known as the Oglethorpe Plan). Savannah was the host city for the sailing competitions during the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta.

1950s STORY OF THE U.S. MAIL USPS PROMOTIONAL FILM LETTER SORTING & DELIVERY 64334
This 1950s color film is an educational public service announcement by the U.S. Postal Service. The film was produced by Lewis & Martin Films Inc. The focus of this film is to educate viewers on postal automation technology. The film begins with a vintage post office seal, followed by Arthur Summerfield, the Postmaster General from 1953-1961 under President Eisenhower, who speaks briefly about the mail service (0:42-1:30). Mail is dropped in and picked up from different mailboxes, including in a dual Local and Out of Town mailbox (1:31-1:58). Workers sort mail and boxes (1:59-2:17). New home construction is briefly showcased, including model homes (2:18-2:38). An aerial view shows a large factory and work trucks (2:39-2:54). Vintage illustrations show the U.S. map, as well as an overstuffed post office bursting at the seams and sending mail flying (2:55-3:30). A woman walks into a vintage “Victorian elegant” post office lobby (4:02-4:17). Men push carts and toss packages in a postal processing facility, letters are sorted into city boxes by hand, and packages from a mountain of boxes are tossed into hampers (4:18-5:00). The Transorma Letter Sorting Machine, the first implementation of a semiautomatic mail sorter, is operated by five clerks. Mail is shown being sorted by hand for contrast (5:01-5:43). An automated conveyor belt system is demonstrated, moving mail to different area (5:45-6:38). Boxes are moved down a conveyor belt where a keyboard operator punches in the address area for automatic sorting (6:39-7:14). A postman walks his route and delivers mail. 1950s post office trucks drop off packages (7:15-8:13). A carrier uses an experimental, three-wheeled post office truck (8:14-8:30). A postman pushes a postal cart down the sidewalk, delivering mail (8:31-8:40). The first version of a modern post office layout is shown, including the 24x7 lobby (8:41-9:13). Innovations such as early automated stamp machine, the post office lockbox, and the presence of ballpoint pens are briefly showcased (9:14-9:35). A woman prepares business mail and bundles mail with pressure-sensitive tape, dropping them into a triple-section mailbox (9:36-10:54). An experimental automatic culling machine, an automatic canceling machine, an electronic scanner that reads typed and printed addresses, and a code control machine are demonstrated. Researchers experiment with different mail automation ideas (10:55-13:10). Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield speaks to the camera to conclude the film (13:11-14:33).

Downtown Savannah largely retains the original town plan prescribed by founder James Oglethorpe (a design now known as The Oglethorpe Plan). Savannah was the host city for the sailing competitions during the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. On February 12, 1733, General James Oglethorpe and his settlers landed at Yamacraw Bluff and were greeted by Tomochichi, the Yamacraws, and Indian traders John and Mary Musgrove. Mary Musgrove often served as a translator. The city of Savannah was founded on that date, along with the colony of Georgia. In 1751 Savannah and the rest of Georgia became a Royal Colony and Savannah was made the colonial capital of Georgia. By the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, Savannah had become the southernmost commercial port of the Thirteen Colonies. British troops took the city in 1778, and the following year a combined force of American and French soldiers failed to rout the British at the Siege of Savannah. The British did not leave the city until July 1782. Savannah, a prosperous seaport throughout the nineteenth century, was the Confederacy's sixth most populous city and the prime objective of General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea. Early on December 21, 1864, Savannah authorities negotiated a peaceful surrender, and Union troops marched into the city at dawn. Savannah was named for the Savannah River, which probably derives from variant names for the Shawnee, a Native American people who migrated to the river in the 1680s. The Shawnee destroyed another Native people, the Westo, and occupied their lands at the head of the Savannah River's navigation on the fall line, near present-day Augusta. These Shawnee were known by several local variants, including Shawano, Savano, Savana and Savannah. Another theory is that the name Savannah refers to the extensive marshlands surrounding the river for miles inland, and is derived from the English term savanna, a kind of tropical grassland, which was borrowed by the English from Spanish sabana and used in the Southern Colonies. (The Spanish word comes from the Taino word zabana. Still other theories suggest that the name Savannah originates from Algonquian terms meaning southerner or perhaps salt. Savannah lies on the Savannah River, approximately 20 mi (32 km) upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. According to the United States Census Bureau (2011), the city has a total area of 108.7 square miles (281.5 km2), of which 103.1 square miles (267.0 km2) is land and 5.6 square miles (15 km2) is water (5.15%). Savannah is the primary port on the Savannah River and the largest port in the state of Georgia. It is also located near the U.S. Intracoastal Waterway. Georgia's Ogeechee River flows toward the Atlantic Ocean some 16 miles (26 km) south of downtown Savannah. Savannah is prone to flooding. Five canals and several pumping stations have been built to help reduce the effects: Fell Street Canal, Pipemaker's Canal, Kayton Canal, Springfield Canal and the Casey Canal, with the first four draining north into the Savannah River. Savannah's climate is classified as humid subtropical (Köppen Cfa). In the Deep South this climate is characterized by long and almost tropical summers, with temperatures reaching freezing on only 24 days in the winter (and with rare snowfall).

Savannah Bungalow With Wraparound Porch in Thunderbolt | Georgia | Small House Design
This modest bungalow sits on a quiet tree-lined street in Thunderbolt, Georgia, a picturesque fishing village just a few miles from downtown Savannah. The small house has been renovated by the owner and turned into a vacation rental.
The public spaces are arranged along the left side, with the living room in front, the dining space in the middle and the kitchen at the back. The other side of the house has two bedrooms with a spacious bathroom in between. The exact size is unknown but we estimate it to be a comfortable 800 to 900 ft2 (74 to 84 m2).
The bungalow is now air conditioned, but originally the wraparound porch would have been the main living area during hot, humid weather. The porch can be accessed from both the living and dining rooms, and is wide enough to place groupings of furniture while leaving space for people to pass. Since these photos were taken, the owner has also added a screened porch off the back bedroom.
The large backyard is shaded by a 250-year-old oak tree dripping with Spanish Moss. The new screened porch likely improves access to the backyard as there previously was no back door at all, however it would be nice to have a door from the kitchen as well.
The bathroom is very big and even has space for a large armoire. Given the size, the room was likely used for something else before being turned into a bathroom. The laundry facilities are located in the kitchen, with the machines concealed behind a curtain in a built-in niche.
