The Vietnamese refugee experience is a part of Vietnamese history that must be remembered and shared. After the fall of Saigon, millions of Vietnamese people fled the land and went to the seas. Some paid the ultimate price, while others were sent to refugee camps throughout Asia. Galang in Indonesia was one of the largest refugee boat people camps. Some people have spent almost 10 years there awaiting a new parent country in the west, such as America, Canada, Australia, or Denmark. Today, Galang Ex Vietnam Camp is a sleepy tourist attraction that rarely gets any visitors. Luckily, I met Abu Galang, who grew up here and hung out with the Vietnamese kids. He showed me around and gave a more thorough tour and answered many of my questions. Either way, this experience was eye opening for me and allowed me to at least be where the refugees were. Second generation Vietnamese people must take note of such history.

For those of you who have free time just visit this historical site. It is interesting to visit this village of Vietnam in Galang Island. For you lovers of historical tourism, then Kampung Vietnam became one of the tourism places in Batam that you must visit.

1979 exodus of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese civil war. Vietnamese village in Galang Island store traces the wrenching displacement.
Galang Island is part of the autonomous city of Batam. Island of approximately 80 km ² has become one stopover location of civil war refugees in Vietnam. Hundreds of thousands of people left the country to escape by the sea using boats alarming condition. The boat is filled between 40-100 people.
For months they oscillate in the waters of the South China without a definite purpose. Many casualties on the way. Until finally they were stranded at several places, one of Indonesia. Galang Island and Tanjung Pinang are two areas where they are anchored.

Large-scale evacuation is under the spotlight. World recognize the refugees as 'boat people'. UN agencies who take care of the issue of refugees, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Indonesian government finally intervened. Finally created a deal to make Galang Island as a temporary shelter for more than 250,000 refugees.
Various facilities and infrastructure built to support the survival of the refugees, such as barracks, hospitals, places of worship, schools.
Their presence is concentrated in one area for ease of supervision, as well as to prevent the spread of venereal diseases Vietnam Rose who likely suffered by refugees.
Throughout the years 1979-1996, the place where they continue to live, before finally repatriated to the country of origin or asylum from developed countries.
Shelters since 1996 was declared as conservation area and is open to the general public who want to visit the museum that its existence remains protected by the Indonesian government. The location is now better known by the locals as Kampung Vietnam.
Visitors can still see some of the monuments and other remnants in the refugee camps. When entering a new island, visitors are greeted Statue or Garden Humanity Humanity. The statue was built to commemorate the tragic events that have occurred at this location. A refugee woman named Tinh Han Loai suicide because not bear the shame after being raped by a fellow refugee.

Not far from the Statue of Humanity Parks, there NGHAs Trang Grave cemetery. Around 500 Vietnamese refugees who died due to various diseases or old age buried here. Relatives of the deceased occasionally come for pilgrimage to Galang Island.
One of the buildings that can provide a clear picture of refugee life in this place is the former office of UNHCR. Here are stored the photos refugee life, there are photos thousand faces of refugees who once lived on this island. The building has now turned into an information center for visitors.
In this area there are also three boats were first used when the refugees left Vietnam. In 1996, these boats had sunk by the refugees as a form of protest against the decision of the UNHCR and the government of Indonesia who want to repatriate some 5,000 refugees who do not pass the test to get a new citizenship. Besides drowning, angry refugees is also burn. But eventually by government authorities Batam boats are lifted to the mainland, repaired, and shown to the public to commemorate the struggle and suffering of the refugees. The boats are now known as Monument boat.

As a means of worship, a house of worship also was built in the region, such as Quan Am Tu Temple, the Catholic church Nha Tho Duc Me Vo Nhiem, Protestant churches, and a mosque. Condition of the whole house of worship are well preserved, and can be used by the visitors.
Quan Am Tu monastery looks striking because colorful painted so easily recognizable. Inside the temple there are three large statues with colors that are not less striking. One is a statue of the Goddess Guang Pu Shi Sha. In part there is a plaque that explains the rigidity of this goddess of power, which can bring good luck and matchmaking, providing domestic harmony, and fulfill the ideals for children. For those who wish granted his request, to offer up hope and throw a coin to the statue of the goddess. In front of the temple there is a statue of a dragon that seems to keep the third statue, as well as the sleeping Buddha statue sacred.

Kampung Vietnam di Pulau Galang merupakan sebuah camp pengungsian seluas 80 hektare yang di bangun saat terjadinya perang saudara di Vietnam pada tahun 1975.
Saat mengunjungi pulau ini, kamu dapat mengingat kembali betapa kejamnya tentara komunis Vietnam, sampai-sampai warganya harus melarikan diri jauh ke seberang Laut China Selatan. Pada masa itu, PBB via UNHCR mengamanatkan kepada Indonesia untuk menjadikan Pulau Galang yang masih kosong tak berpenghuni sebagai tempat penampungan para pengungsi Perang Vietnam. Kemudian didirikanlah camp pengungsian, lengkap dengan berbagai fasilitas, seperti barak-barak, rumah sakit, tempat ibadah, sekolah, bahkan penjara.
Lokasi Kampung Vietnam di Pulau Galang terletak tidak jauh dari Kota Batam, yaitu sekitar 60 km. Perjalanan darat memakan waktu sekitar 1,5 jam via Jembatan Barelang.
Kampung ini merupakan tempat pengungsian sekitar 250 ribu orang Vietnam yang pada tahun 1979–1996 sering dikenal sebagai manusia perahu. Sebagian dari mereka sampai ke Pulau Natuna, Tanjung Pinang, Pulau Galang, dan beberapa pulau lain di wilayah Kepulauan Riau.
Meski tempatnya sedikit terpencil, tetapi hal itu tidak membuat tempat wisata Batam ini sepi dari pengunjung.l. Rasa ingin tahu yang besar dari para wisatawan mengenai sejarah dari kampung tersebut serta keunikannya adalah dua faktor yang membuat tempat wisata Batam ini selalu dikunjungi.
Banyaknya sejarah Pulau Galang dan Kampung Vietnam membuat tempat ini akhirnya menjadi objek wisata di Batam. Meskipun tempatnya sedikit terpencil, tetapi hal itu tidak membuatnya sepi pengunjung.
Sayangnya, di balik sejarah pulau ini, terdapat juga cerita angker dan horor yang mewarnai Kampung Vietnam. Padahal, sebagian besar bangunan dan isi kampung bisa dibilang masih terawat dengan baik dan layak untuk dikunjungi. Bangunan peribadatan yang terdapat di sini juga memberikan gambaran mengenai kepercayaan para pengungsi yang pernah tinggal di tempat ini.
Namun, di balik semua itu, Pulau Galang dan Kampung Vietnam menjadi tempat wisata yang layak dan wajib kamu kunjungi saat berada di Batam.

বাটাম যাওয়ার সবচেয়ে সহজ ও সাশ্রয়ী পথ হলো ফেরি। সিঙ্গাপুর ও মালয়েশিয়ার জোহরবারু থেকে প্রচুর ফেরি আছে। এসব ফেরিতে আগে থেকে টিকিট কাটার দরকার নেই। সিঙ্গাপুরের হারবারফ্রন্ট থেকে চমৎকার ও নিরাপদ এসব ফেরিতে অভিবাসন শুল্কসহ প্রতিজনের যাওয়া-আসায় খরচ পড়বে বাংলাদেশি টাকায় তিন হাজার টাকার মতো । একেবারে সাগরপাড়ে অসংখ্য হোটেল ও রিসোর্ট আছে বাটামে, ভাড়াও কম । ৪ থেকে ১০ হাজার টাকায় পাঁচতারকা হোটেলে থাকা সম্ভব এই দ্বীপে।
বাটামে ফেরি থেকে নেমেই প্রথম চমকটা আসবে ট্যাক্সিভাড়া শুনে। হোটেল যদি শহরের ওপারে হয়, তাহলে ট্যাক্সিভাড়া চাইবে হয়তো এক লাখ রুপি। ভয় পাবেন না। বাংলাদেশি টাকায় এটি ৭০০ টাকারও কম। এমন সাশ্রয়ে খেয়েদেয়ে লাখ লাখ রুপি ওড়ানোর সুযোগ জীবনে বেশি নাও আসতে পারে। তাই চলুন ঘুরে আসি ইন্দোনেশিয়ার বাটাম থেকে।
