Gdańsk Nowy Port Lighthouse, one of the most attractive lighthouses on the Polish coast and the only one with a time ball. The lighthouse at Nowy Port is one of the most attractive and distinctive historical buildings of Gdańsk. It is also a building with its own remarkable and sometimes extremely dramatic history, in which it figured in the stormy fate the city and in world events. On the night of 31st August to 1st September 1939 the lighthouse was garrisoned by German soldiers with heavy machine guns, who were under orders to fire to hold in check those manning a Polish emplacement at Westerplatte on the other side of the channel. All forms of German armed forces had received the same command from Hitler: open fire at 4.45 am exactly on 1st September. The machine gunners in the lighthouse carried out this command, while the crew of the battleship Schleswig Holstein delayed by a full three minutes and started shelling Westerplatte at 4.48 am. It was those shots from the lighthouse at Gdańsk Nowy Port that in fact began the Second World War, a war that claimed 55 million lives. The lighthouse itself passed into world history. Lighthouses symbolise all that is best about human beings: the desire to warn of danger, the desire to save in a disaster, the desire to bring help to survivors and the desire to point to a proper way of life.”. The lighthouse at Nowy Port is one of the most attractive marine lighthouses in Northern Europe (geographical location 54°24’28”N, 18°39’50”E). It measures 27 metres in height, was built in 1893 and came into operation in 1894. Legend has it that it is a twin of the lighthouse in Cleveland, Ohio, the most beautiful of marine lighthouses in America. It was the first lighthouse on the Baltic to use electric light.
