The Surfmen of Barnegat Light
Surfmen from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light, N.J., discuss what it takes to be a member of the small community of specialized heavy weather boat handlers. Chief Warrant Officer Jay Greiner, Chief Petty Officer Arnold Head, Petty Officer 1st Class James Corbisiero, and Petty Officer 1st Class Jared Meloro offer their perspectives on what qualities it takes to become a surfman in the Coast Guard. U.S. Coast Guard video by Petty Officer 1st Class Nick Ameen and Petty Officer 3rd Class Cynthia Oldham
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
CWO GREINER: A Coast Guard Surfman is a very talented boat driver who has the ability to operate boats in extreme weather
BM1 MELORO: Someone that has proven they can handle tough situations
BM1 CORBISIERO: The ultimate example of proficiency in craft
BMC HEAD: A job that details going out in extreme conditions, conduct search and rescue, and save lives.
BMC HEAD: We always take our job seriously no matter if it's calm or if it's rough. You have to take everything more seriously when you're in extreme conditions.
CWO GREINER: I've been in surf that's exceeding 25 feet. You're fighting wave-to-wave. As a Surfman you like to be able to look beyond the next series, but when it's that big, it's not training; it's survival.
BMC HEAD: Qualities that define Surfmen are: judgment
BM1 CORBISIERO: Courage
BM1 MELORO: Experience
BM1 CORBISIERO: Commitment
BM1 MELORO: Patience
BMC HEAD: Patience
CWO GREINER: Patience
BMC HEAD: And a lot of skill
CWO GREINER: The Surfman is the pinnacle of boat driving skills, but as much as it is the pinnacle of boat driving skills, it's the pinnacle of leadership skills, also. You have to have a total package.
BM1 CORBISIERO: I believe there is a level of fear every time you go out, because if there wasn't any fear, something would be wrong and complacency could set in.
BMC HEAD: To be a Surfman, you are in a very small community.
BM1 MELORO: You always end up working with the same people over and over, and you can use their experience for the more senior Surfmen.
BM1 CORBISIERO: It's great to be able to carry on the tradition and hopefully pass on what I learn to future Surfmen.
BMC HEAD: We all take pride in the pin that we wear and the qualification that we hold.
CWO GREINER: It's an honor. It's humbling. But it's hard. It's a difficult team to get into, but it's worth it, and every day you go out there in the surf you gotta make sure you come home.

Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The area where the lighthouse stands was regarded as one of the most important navigational points for ships bound to and from New York Harbor. The ships were dependent upon the Barnegat Lighthouse to avoid the shoals extending from the shoreline. The swift currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals challenged the skills of even the most experienced sailors. The park is included as a maritime site on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.
With a panoramic view of the Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island, the lighthouse is a popular tourist site. The lighthouse is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day (weather permitting).
Saltwater fish can be caught along the bulkhead next to the picnic area. These fish include striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, summer flounder, tautog, winter flounder, and black sea bass. Access for the handicapped is available.
Picnicking areas are available. Handicapped access is available. Picnic tables are located along Barnegat Inlet. Two picnic shelters with tables are also provided. Fires, propane stoves, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited at the sites.
The birds that can be spotted at the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park include but are not limited to shorebirds and wading birds, including black-crowned night herons, snowy egrets, and brown pelicans. Each winter, BLSP is a reliable place to see Harlequin Duck, Long-tailed Duck, Common Eider and all 3 scoter species as well as Purple Sandpiper and Ipswich Savannah Sparrow.
The Maritime Forest Trail is a 1/5-mile long, self-guided loop trail through one of the last remnants of maritime forest on Long Beach Island. The trail is classified as easy to moderate.
All trail classifications and descriptions are made by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the State Park System.
The Barnegat Lighthouse Interpretive Center is open to those wishing to learn the history and environment surrounding the Barnegat Lighthouse.
