Viking World is a museum in Njarðvík, Reykjanesbær, Iceland. The museum opened on 8 May 2009, followed by a formal opening on Icelandic National Day, 17 June. The director was Elisabeth Ward; the building was designed by Guðmundur Jónsson.
Iceland’s history has long been intertwined with the Vikings, they go hand in hand and there is no better place to learn about this than a visit to the best Viking museum Iceland has to offer, Viking World. You see the Vikings settled Iceland with the first Viking visit happening by accident. Yes, a complete accident in around the start of the 8th century discovered one of the most stunning countries in the world. Gardar the Swede from Denmark was blown off course and as a result, discovered Iceland. This was the first of many Vikings landing in Iceland.
It was only a natural progression that Iceland cash in on its Viking past with the large number of tourists that flock to this amazing island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Going to visit an Iceland Viking museum is a fantastic way to discover more about the Viking world and what actually went on in it. There are also so many Viking television shows now that have really opened many peoples eyes to an era that may not have been as well known a few years ago.
Viking World Museum Iceland is located close to Keflavik airport. The Viking museum Iceland is located in a purpose built modern exhibition hall designed by an award-winning Icelandic Architect. The first thing that strikes you about the Viking museum is its location, is its clear lines, glass panels and glistening blue water that laps up the background.
The Íslendingur that sits front and centre is a replica of a Viking ship that was found intact and excavated in Norway in 1888. The Íslendingur, that now calls Viking world home, was built in 1992.
Don’t just think it’s a model, this boat was sailed from Iceland to New York in 2000 to celebrate Leif Erikson’s discovery of The United States of America. The ship is truly amazing and can be accessed from the second floor of the museum. You can walk on it and take in its size and design. Stand at the bow and pretend you are on a voyage of discovery seeking out far away lands just like the vikings of Iceland did in the past. You can walk on the ship, around the ships upper deck and under the Viking ship. With all of this acces you can really get a feeling for how an approaching Viking ship would have put the fear into anyone.
Within Viking World you will find a Vikings of the North Atlantic exhibition with displays of many replica Viking artifacts. This exhibition showcases the Viking expansion across the North Atlantic Ocean. The Norsemen Vikings sailed everywhere from the North Sea to the Black Sea. For two centuries beginning in about 800 AD, the Viking expansion was on. This exhibition supported by models, information boards and computer displays help you to see how they expanded.
There is a small cinema area where you can watch movies on a big screen about the Viking World as we know it. When we were at Viking Museum Keflavik they were showing a documentary on the crossing to New York. Other Viking documentaries dealing with the Norsemen Vikings of Iceland and their long history were entertaining and informing. A little kids corner was near the cinema if you have smaller kids this may keep them occupied while you learn about the Vikings.
The Settlement of Iceland display talks about the Vikings landing in this nation. The Settlement of Iceland exhibition displays Viking artifacts and archaeological findings from the Reykjanes region. Reykjanes Peninsula was first inhabited by the Norseman Vikings from the ninth century and ruins of the Viking Village Iceland were found in the area.
Photographs and illustrations round off the display of longhouses that were home to the first Viking settlers. Viking World Museum puts on a great display that tells the story of the settlements in the area. This section houses a model of a burial boat with displays of real Viking bones. We found this very educational for the kids and the girls loved the way it was set out.
Upstairs in the Viking museum there is a Norse mythology and myths display. Our eldest daughter Willow really enjoyed learning about this. An audio guide in 4 languages is available and a light show makes this an attractive educational display for the whole family. It’s really a sensory exhibition with lights sounds and shapes of the Norse Gods. The fate of the Gods display introduces the religion of Norsemen some one thousand years ago. You will hear about Asgard where the gods lived to hear about Óðinn the leader of Norse gods. Come and learn about the society of pre-Christian Scandinavians.

Reykjanesbær - Iceland
Reykjanesbær is a municipality on the Southern Peninsula in Iceland. It is made up of the towns Keflavík, Njarðvík, the village of Hafnir and, since 2006, Ásbrú. The municipality was created in 1994 when the inhabitants of the three towns voted to merge them into one. Reykjanesbær is the fifth largest municipality in Iceland, with 15,379 citizens.
Of the three towns which make up the municipality, Keflavík is the largest, while Hafnir is the smallest and some 10 kilometers distant. Keflavík and Njarðvík were originally distinct towns but gradually grew together over the course of the latter half of the 20th century, until the only thing separating them was a single street. The northern side of the street belonged to Keflavík and the southern side to Njarðvík. Since May 2009 the township of Njarðvík has been the location of the Viking World museum. In 2006, when the United States Navy closed Naval Air Station Keflavik, the site was taken over by the development agency Kadeco, and renamed Ásbrú. A university, Keilir, was founded and now Ásbrú houses the campuses of various educational institutions and also businesses, both newly founded and relocated to the site of the air base.

Iceland : City Keflavik – Reykjanesbaer drone fly over the city aerial video
Keflavik is a very important center of fishing, industrial and service. It is inhabited by about 10,000 people. In 1996 the city was connected with the towns Njarðvík and hafnir and former US base Asbru in agglomerations Reykjanesbaer (over 14 thousand people).
In the past, Keflavik served as commercial. Even in the sixteenth century, there was no shortage here of the English and German merchants, but after the introduction of the Danish monopoly in the seventeenth century, the city began to decline. After World War II the US military stationed here in the framework of NATO. After years of protests by the local population, the base was finally abolished September 30, 2006. On this day there was a solemn ceremony of exchange of flags on the mast of the US to Icelandic. The buildings of the former base was converted into flats, designed mainly for students.
Take a walk path along the cliffs at the harbor. In nice weather you can see from here Reykjavik, and even the Snaefellsnes peninsula. At the cliffs of the cave is located (Skessugellir) in which it can meet a huge figure of a troll Skessa. More in the gallery below the article. Troll snores, belches but also wins the very famous song.

Equally interesting place is a museum of the Viking world where you can see a reconstruction of a Viking boat.
In the city center there is a museum Dushus currently is several museums in neighboring buildings. The entire island is famous for the local exhibition of models of almost 100 ships, constructed by the skipper Glimura Karlsson.
The building held chamber concerts, you can also admire the works of the painter jóhannes sveinsson kjarval.
The great attraction of the city is taking place in September Night Lights (Ljosa-nott), ending with a great fireworks display.
In most European countries, the international airport is located in the state capital. Iceland in this category is one of the exceptions, the main and also the largest airport for international flights that arrive is located about 4 kilometers west of the town of Keflavik. It is called the International Airport of Reykjavik. With the exception of flights to Greenland and the Faroe Islands, the airport in Keflavik supports all other international calls. The airport is also designated as a reserve airport for the landing of NASA space shuttles in case of problems with the landing in the United States or failure aboard the spacecraft primarily because of the history of its construction (built by the US Army during World War II)
The airport has a restrictive approach to spend the night in anticipation of the cruise, but air come in the middle of the night saw several people sleeping in the corners airport.

The Amazing Viking Ship Islendingur and Museum
Viking World or Vikinggaheimar Museum is located in the seaside town of Reykjaneshaer (not far from Keflavik International Airport). This was the last tour included in the Tauck Tours 7-day Iceland Cruise.
Viking World has five different exhibitions which are all connected to the Viking age and gives an opportunity to learn about their history and lifestyle 1,000 years ago.
The highlight is a replica of the Viking ship Islendingur, a seaworthy vessel that sailed to North America in 2000. It boggles my mind how the adventurous Vikings explored the seas in such a tiny craft!

The Viking Ship Íslendingur
On the way, back we stopped over for several days in Reykjavík Iceland; and spent a few hours at the Viking World Museum to see The Viking Ship Íslendingur.
Íslendingur is a replica of the Gokstad Viking ship and was sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 2000 from Reykjavík Iceland on June 17th and arrived at L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland on July 28th, then sailed onto New York City, where she arrived on 5th October, approximately 3 months after the start of the voyage.
The ship was built in 1996 by Gunnar Marel Eggertsson, a shipwright from the Westman Islands who skippered the Norwegian Gokstad ship copy Gaia on her voyage to Washington, D.C. in 1991. The Íslendingur measures 22.5 meters in length, 5.3 meters in breadth, has a draught of 1.7 meters and weighs 80 tons. She was built of 18 tons of Norwegian and Swedish oak and required 5,000 nails. Her sail was made in Denmark. Her crew complement is 9; the original Gokstad ship carried 70. Her average speed is 7 knots, top speed 18 knots. She is equipped with an engine for occasional use but is otherwise an authentic copy, made with ancient techniques.
Sérsveit ríkislögreglustjóra | Víkingasveitin/Viking Squad | Icelandic Special Forces
The Icelandic special forces (Icelandic: Sérsveit ríkislögreglustjóra or Víkingasveitin) are Iceland's elite counter-terrorism unit, specializing in various types of armed and unarmed infantry combat. It is in many ways modeled on the Norwegian Emergency Response Unit counter-terrorist unit with which it conducts many exercises, both in Norway and Iceland. Iceland has no standing regular military, thus some functions performed by military forces in other nations may be performed in Iceland by units such as the police special forces.
The special forces unit is considered to have been officially founded on 19 October 1982, when its first members finished training with Norwegian special forces. There were many reasons for commissioning the unit, including a hijacked airliner that landed at Keflavík International Airport in 1976 and a few occasions of criminals using firearms against unarmed policemen. It had become clear that the Icelandic Police needed an effective tool to combat such violent, armed situations.
Members of the unit were deployed in the Balkans as a part of operations led by NATO, and some members have been deployed to Afghanistan. The unit used to be under the command of the Reykjavík Chief of Police. However, in 1997, a new law was passed that put the unit directly under the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police.
In December 2003, Minister of Justice, Björn Bjarnason, introduced plans to strengthen the unit in response to the War on Terrorism, and further its responsibility in all operational issues covering more than one local jurisdictions. Today, members of the unit are stationed in three different police districts, Höfuðborgarsvæðið police district (metropolitan police), Suðurnes police district and Akureyri police district.
On 2 December 2013, a man died after a gun battle with the members of the special forces. The unit had never been forced to open fire at suspects before. This was the first time a person was killed by police in Icelandic history.
The unit is tasked with several duties, including but not limited to:
• Security of the state and state officials
• Security of foreign dignitaries
• Counter-terrorism
• Support of local police forces
Additionally, the unit is designated to protect important installations in wartime, and it is often involved in exercises with Norwegian and Danish military special forces. During the stay of the U.S. military forces in Iceland, it conducted anti-special forces training operations and was responsible for its defences against terrorism.
The police special forces have five main squads:
* Alpha Squad: A bomb squad specializing in bomb defusal.
* Bravo Squad: A boat squad specializing in operations on sea and water, diving and underwater warfare, and boat operations.
* Charlie Squad: A sniper squad specializing in sniper warfare, entries, and close target reconnaissance.
* Delta Squad: An intelligence squad specializing in anti-terrorism intelligence, surveillance, and infiltration.
* Echo Squad: An airborne squad specializing in aircraft hijacking operations, skydiving and surprise assault operations, along with port security.
