We visited Vikos Canyon and the beautiful Zagorochoria at Epirus, Greece
This time our destination is Vikos Gorge & Zagorochoria villages in Epirus at Pindus Mountains. I think it's one of the most beautiful destinations in the world & combines many activities such as mountaineering, trekking, rafting, canyoning. Also there are many paths in the forest from one village to another. The villages are gorgeous and when I'm there my mood is transformed. We enjoyed the gorge of Vikos, which is the deepest gorge in the world. We followed the path from Monodendri village to the monastery of Agia Paraskevi and then we carefully took the path through the gorge. We ended up staying in Mikro Papigo village at Pinocchio Hostel, which I highly recommend to those who want to visit it.

A Roadtrip in Epirus, Greece - 50 minutes around Vikos Gorge
NOTE:
This isn't my usual Car-Centric upload, but is a product closer to my heart's definition of true road tripping pleasure, because spending a day driving leisurely around is to also explore new roads in unknown territory, to find some unspoiled countryside with good food and good company and to appreciate the long history that exists in parts of the world. In that regard, this is about as good as I've ever had it.
SUMMARY of the VIDEO:
A long edit from a day trip in a Mercedes C180 through the mountains above Ioannina in the Epirus region of Greece, known as The Zagorohoria, with my son Simon. We drove to the deepest gorge in Europe; The Vikos Gorge. We visited rustic hill towns like Vitsa and Monodendri, explored old monasteries and mountains with interlacing rivers spanned by old stone arch bridges that the area is famous for.
The clip opens with still shots and text introducing the area. The video starts around the 3 minute mark. The video presents three segments of driving. First is from the town of Kipoi 440 10 at the south end of the Vikos Gorge to the town of Vikos at the north end of the gorge. I talk a bit about history and driving in the area. At Vikos we enjoy some ice cream while looking at the views. Then follows a shorter segment where we leave Vikos and drive via Aristi to an ice cold river for a refreshing splash. The last segment is the longest and shows the drive from the river, via Aristi, all the way back to Ioannina showing the transition from mountain roads, to the main valley road, through the city outskirts and into the center 'Kastro' of Ioannina within the Ottoman period fortress walls.
I hope you enjoy it. I'd be glad to get comments. Let me know if particular parts are boring enough to delete. I had a hard time cutting more without feeling it lost it's personal flavor and sense of sharing the exploration we undertook that day.

Από το χωριό Βίκος, ξεκινήσαμε την κατάβαση προς το ομώνυμο φαράγγι που καταλήγει στις πηγές του ποταμού Βοϊδομάτη. Ειδυλιακό μέρος για ξεκούραση και επαφή με την φύση. Ο ήχος του νερού, καλύπτει όλους τους ήχους του δάσους και φυσικά είναι ο καλύτερος. Το καθαρότερο - μαζί με τον Καλαμά - ποτάμι της Ευρώπης, σας περιμένει να το γευτείτε!
From the village of Vikos, we started the descent to the homonymous gorge ending at the springs of the Voidomatis river. An idyllic place for relaxation and contact with nature. The sound of water covers all the sounds of the forest and of course it is the best. The cleanest - along with Kalamas - river of Europe, awaits you to taste it!

Monodendri, Vikos Gorge - Greece HD Travel Channel
Monodendri -- Μονοδένδρι - north of Ioannina in the Zagoria is a popular starting point for walking through the Vikos Gorge. The gorge is 6 miles long and according to the Guinness Book of Records it is the world's deepest gorge with a depth from 1,968 ft to 3,281 ft. As you can see in the video, you have a stunning overview from the Monastery Agia Paraskevi, founded in 1414. A well-maintained walking trail of 1,968 ft leads to the monastery. The impressive frescos in the church date presumably from the late Byzantine time, probably from 1412.
Back in Monodendri we've deserved a break and made a stop on the market square in Pitas tis Kikitsas restaurant. The name of the restaurant dates back to 1958, when the Frenchmen were the first tourists in the region. They had problems with the Greek name of the landlady and they simply called here Madame Kiki. Here you can taste the typical Alevropitas, made of flour, butter, eggs and feta and baked according to the original recipe from Madame Kiki from 1958.

Monodendri - Μονοδένδρι, nördlich von Ioannina in der Zagoria, ist ein beliebter Ausgangspunkt zum Durchwandern der Vikos-Schlucht - Φαράγγι του Βίκου. Die 10 km lange und laut Guiness Buch der Rekorde tiefste Schlucht der Welt ist zwischen 600 und 1.000 m tief. Einen atemberaubenden Überblick hat man vom Kloster Agía Paraskevi, das 1414 gegründet wurde und über einen 600 m langen Wanderweg erreichbar ist. Die beeindruckenden Fresken in der Kirche stammen vermutlich aus der spätbyzantinischen Zeit, man schätzt das Jahr 1412.
Zurück in Monodendri haben wir uns eine Pause verdient und machen halt auf dem Marktplatz bei Pitas tis Kikitsas. Der Name des Restaurants stammt aus dem Jahre 1958 als Franzosen als erste Touristen die Region bereisten. Diese hatte Probleme mit dem griechischen Namen der Wirtin und nannten sie einfach Madam Kiki. Hier werden die typischen Alevropitas aus Mehl, Butter, Eiern und Feta nach dem Originalrezept von Madam Kiki von 1958 gebacken.

Zagori (Greek: Ζαγόρι), is a region and a municipality in the Pindus mountains in Epirus, in northwestern Greece. The seat of the municipality is the village Asprangeli. It has an area of some 1,000 square kilometers and contains 46 villages known as Zagori villages (or Zagorochoria or Zagorohoria), and is in the shape of an upturned equilateral triangle. The southern corner of the triangle contains the provincial capital, Ioannina, the south-western side is formed by Mount Mitsikeli (1,810m), and the Aoos river and Mount Tymfi constitute the northern side, and the south-eastern side runs along the Varda river to Mount Mavrovouni (2,100m) near Metsovo. Η πανέμορφη χαράδρα βρίσκεται στο Γεωπάρκο Βίκου Αώου που έχει χαρακτηριστεί «Παγκόσμιο Μνημείο φυσικής κληρονομιάς της UNESCO».
Έχει μήκος 20 χιλιόμετρα και σε πολλά σημεία της το βάθος ξεπερνάει τα 1.000 μέτρα. Το διατρέχει ο παραπόταμος του Αώου, Βοϊδομάτης.
Δημιουργήθηκε μετά από έντονες γεωλογικές ανακατατάξεις κατά τη διάρκεια των γεωλογικών εποχών. Τα πρώτα ίχνη ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας στην περιοχή που έχουν εντοπισθεί, χρονολογήθηκαν στο 40.000 π.Χ.. Η χλωρίδα που συναντάται στην περιοχή του φαραγγιού είναι ιδιαίτερα μεγάλης ποικιλίας. Χαρακτηριστικά, μέχρι και τις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα τα βότανα του φαραγγιού χρησιμοποιούνταν από πρακτικούς γιατρούς, τους λεγόμενους «βικογιατρούς», για θεραπευτικούς σκοπούς.
Αποτελεί δημοφιλή διαδρομή περιηγητών προσφέροντας θαυμάσιες εικόνες. Από το χωριό Βραδέτο στη θέση Μπελόη, όπως και από τη θέση Οξιά, η θέα προς το φαράγγι είναι πανοραμική.
Στην περιοχή του φαραγγιού απαγορεύεται αυστηρά κάθε ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα που έχει σχέση με κτηνοτροφία και φυσικά η υλοτομία.

The Vikos Gorge is a gorge in the Pindus Mountains of northern Greece. It lies on the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi, with a length of about 20 km, depth ranging from 450 to 1600 m and a width ranging from 400 m only a few metres at its narrowest part.The gorge is found in the core zone of the Vikos–Aoös National Park, in the Zagori region. It begins between the villages of Monodendri and Koukouli and ends near the village of Vikos. Its an amazing place in Zagora, Greece!
Το φαράγγι του Βίκου είναι ένα από τα πιο ξακουστά στην Ελλάδα. Βρίσκεται 30 χιλιόμετρα βορειοδυτικά των Ιωαννίνων και είναι το βαθύτερο φαράγγι παγκοσμίως, σύμφωνα με το Βιβλίο Guinness. Αποτελεί τον πυρήνα του Εθνικού Δρυμού Βίκου-Αώου, στην περιοχή του οποίου βρίσκει καταφύγιο μεγάλη ποικιλία σπάνιων ειδών χλωρίδας και πανίδας.

Το φαράγγι έχει μήκος περίπου 11 χιλιόμετρα και σε πολλά σημεία του το βάθος ξεπερνάει τα 1.000 μέτρα. Ο παραπόταμος του Αώου, Βοϊδομάτης, που το διατρέχει, έχει νερό όλες εποχές.
