Vikramshila University Antichak Kahalgaon Bhagalpur
Vikramasila (village Antichak, district Bhagalpur, Bihar) is located about 50 kms east of Bhagalpur and about 13 kms north-east of Kahalgaon, a railway station on Bhagalpur-Sahebganj section of Eastern Railway. It is approachable through 11 kms long motorable road diverting from N.H.80 at Anadipur about 2 kms from Kahalgaon. Vikramasila was one of the largest Buddhist universities having more than hundred teachers and about one thousand students. It produced eminent scholars who were often invited by foreign countries to spread Buddhist learning, culture and religion. The most distinguished and eminent among all was Atisa Dipankara, the founder of Lamaism in Tibet. Subjects like theology, philosophy, grammar, metaphysics, logic etc. were taught here but the most important branch of learning was tantrism. Opening Hours : 10.00 am to 5.00 pm Closed on -- Friday

बिहार के भागलपुर में विक्रमशिला विश्वविद्यालय है। इसे नालंदा विश्वविद्यालय के तर्ज पर बनाया गया था। 100 एकड़ में फैला विश्वविद्यालय अब सुनहरा इतिहास बन गया है। इसे पाल वंश के शासक धर्मपाल ने बनवाया था। यह बौद्ध धर्म का भी बड़ा केंद्र माना गया है। इसे नौंवी शताब्दी में मुसलमान आक्रमणकारियों ने नष्ट कर दिया था। 60 के दशक में इसकी खुदाई पटना विश्वविद्यालय ने करवायी।

Vikramshila Museum - A Documentary by Nikhil Prakash
The Vikramshila museum established in 2004 displays some selected antiquities
unearthed in excavations conducted by Archeological Survey of India (1972-82)
at the Near by site identified to the Remains of vikramshila Mahavvihar the
celebrated ancient University founded by pala king Dharmpala in 8th or early 9th
Century A.D.which prospered for about four centuries.

विक्रमशिला विश्वविद्यालय बिहार राज्य के भागलपुर जिले में स्थित था। इस विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना पाल वंश के राजा धर्मपाल ने ७७५-८०० ई० में की।इस विश्वविद्यालय ने अपनी स्थापना के तुरन्त बाद ही अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय महत्त्व प्राप्त कर लिया था। विक्रमशिला विश्वविद्यालय के प्रख्यात विद्वानों की एक लम्बी सूची है। तिब्बत के साथ इस शिक्षा केन्द्र का प्रारम्भ से ही विशेष सम्बंध रहा है। विक्रमशिला विश्वविद्यालय में विद्याध्ययन के लिए आने वाले तिब्बत के विद्वानों के लिए अलग से एक अतिथिशाला थी। विक्रमशिला से अनेक विद्वान तिब्बत गए थे तथा वहाँ उन्होंने कई ग्रन्थों का तिब्बती भाषा में अनुवाद किया। इन विद्वानों में सबसे अधिक प्रसिद्ध दीपंकर श्रीज्ञान थे जो उपाध्याय अतीश के नाम से विख्यात हैं। विक्रमशिला का पुस्तकालय बहुत समृद्ध था। विक्रमशिला विश्वविद्यालय में बारहवीं शताब्दी में अध्ययन करने वाले विद्यार्थियों की संख्या ३००० थी। विश्वविद्यालय के कुलपति ६ भिक्षुओं के एक मण्डल की सहायता से प्रबंध तथा व्यवस्था करते थे। कुलपति के अधीन ४ विद्वान द्वार-पण्डितों की एक परिषद प्रवेश लेने हेतु आये विद्यार्थियों की परीक्षा लेती थी। इस विश्वविद्यालय में व्याकरण, न्याय, दर्शन और तंत्र के अध्ययन की विशेष व्यवस्था थी। इस विश्वविद्यालय की व्यवस्था अत्यधिक सुसंगठित थी। बंगाल के शासक शिक्षा की समाप्ति पर विद्यार्थियों को उपाधि देते थे।

About the place --
Vikramashila University was one of those 3 universities of ancient india , found in around 9th B.C . by the king of Pala dynasty.. place was a learNing centre for the Bodhi's .
This has been dearthed and a overall idea of the place has been deciphered .
Is has a great stupa and many cells all around called as monastery.
Various deities and other precious items excavated from the site has been preserved in the museum nearby ,maintained by the ASI.

The excavation has revealed a large Buddhist monastery with in imposing stupa in its centre and Vative stupasd in addition to so small sterines of letter perid inculding a Tibetab and hindu temple The general plan of the monastery greatly resembles the contemporay sompura Mahavihar Paharpur(Bangladesh).
