Things to See in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii
=================================
1 - Lahaina Historic Trail
What: Self-guided tour of 62 historic Lahaina sites
Where: Spread throughout 55 acres of Lahaina
When: The best time to visit is Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This historic trail takes about an hour
Lahaina is a town of major historical significance. Once the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, a busy whaling port and a plantation settlement, you can follow the Lahaina Historic Trail (Ala Moolelo O Lahaina) to walk in the footsteps of Lahaina’s past.
This self-guided tour takes you to significant sites throughout 55 acres of Lahaina, many of which have been designated National Historic Landmarks. Members of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation have worked for three decades to create the trail and preserve many of the buildings along it. They’ve also labeled dozens of historic sites with informative bronze plaques, each providing explanations about an important point of interest from Lahaina's past. Look for them around and about Front Street.
You’ll see a fascinating blend of influences covering Hawaiian history, the whaling era, the missionaries and immigrant plantation life. The Baldwin Home was the two-story house of Protestant missionaries in the mid-1830s. Hale Paahao, the “stuck-in-irons house,” was a jail for rowdy sailors in the 1850s. Structures like the Wo Hing Temple and the Lahaina Jodo Mission highlight the influences of Chinese and Japanese immigrants in Maui.
To get a historical walking guide highlighting all 62 historic sites, visit the Lahaina Visitor Center in the Old Lahaina Courthouse located between the Banyan Tree and Lahaina Harbor.
2 - Lahaina Art Galleries Maui
Lahaina has gained a reputation as a renowned art market with dozens of art galleries. Begin your art walk at the Old Jail Gallery run by the non-profit Lahaina Arts Society, home to 185 member artists. Village Galleries is Maui’s oldest gallery showcasing acclaimed local artists. For fun, check out the kinetic sculptures and pop art at the Martin Lawrence Galleries.
To experience all that Lahaina’s art scene has to offer, visit Art Night each Friday between 7pm and 10pm. Join the festivities along and around Front Street as art galleries open their doors, inviting the public to chat with artists, view their works, listen to music and celebrate the arts.
You can also discover other types of unique art in Lahaina, including ceramics, handcrafted woodwork and jewelry. This historic whaling town is also one of the world’s largest markets for scrimshaw, the whalers’ art of carving on ivory. For more unique finds, treasure hunt in Lahaina Printsellers for a collection of maps, prints and engravings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. You’re bound to uncover the perfect Maui memento in Lahaina’s art galleries.
3 - The Banyan Tree
What: One of the country's largest banyan trees
Where: In front of the Lahaina Courthouse, adjacent to Lahaina Harbor
Cool down in the shade under one of the largest banyan trees in the United States. Imported from India and planted in front of the Lahaina Courthouse and Lahaina Harbor on 1873, this sprawling tree along Front Street is the size of an entire city block and stands more than 60-feet high. If you need to cool down a bit, you can walk for two-thirds of an acre under the shadow of its sweeping branches. Many events and art exhibits are held beneath this popular gathering place. At Art in the Park, which takes place every second and fourth weekend of the month, browse for affordable paintings, limited edition prints and a wealth of crafts under the dangling vines and twelve major trunks of this Lahaina landmark.
4 - Lahaina Jodo Mission
What: A Japanese Buddhist temple in Lahaina
Where: Located 45 minutes from Kahului Airport by car in Lahaina just off Front Street at 12 Ala Moana Street
Head west from Lahaina's Front Street toward Baby Beach and you'll discover the Lahaina Jodo Mission. Established in a private house in 1912 to propagate Buddhism in Lahaina, the temple moved to its present location in 1931. This serene destination looks and feels more like Japan than Maui and features one of the largest statues of the Buddha outside of Asia.
The mission is a replica of an authentic Japanese Buddhist temple. Explore these peaceful grounds and you'll discover a towering pagoda and an enormous bronze Buddha statue, 12 feet high and roughly 3 ½ tons. The statue was installed in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. The grounds and buildings of the mission are open to the public and voluntary contributions are accepted.

Interview w DeRubeis - Fine Art of Metal Gallery in Lahaina, Maui.
Born in 1978, it wasn’t long before De Rubeis showed a very early proclivity for drawing. He drew on any materials he could find at home to express his talents. This talent was nurtured to the fullest by his family, and at age 11 his Grandfather gave Chris his first Airbrush. After watching Chris use his airbrush for the very first time, his Grandfather proclaimed that Chris was to become the Artist his Grandfather always wanted to be and would inevitably share his talents on the world’s grand stage.
School was viewed as a chore for De Rubeis. He enjoyed drawing figures on math tests, not solving equations; He preferred doodling beautiful landscapes in the blank spaces most teachers expected to find an essay. Teachers scolded him for not concentrating on his studies and warned that he was on the wrong path. However, this criticism did not deter him from his ultimate destiny. Derubeis would continue to paint and take extra art classes on his lunch break. At age 20 Chris attended the Pasadena Art Center as well as the Associates in Art College in Sherman Oaks, CA. To pay for schooling he painted custom Harleys and started a successful Party T-Shirt business. His professors tried to convince him to choose a “more commercial style” of art but he was never satisfied painting ‘…like everyone else.’
As those who know De Rubeis would be quick to tell you, he has never been one to run with the herd. He found many of these styles to be outdated and uninteresting like his history lectures. Chris continued his quest, searching for something greater and undiscovered, and then one day it happened. While grinding the base paint off a Harley gas tank in his workshop, DeRubeis noticed something spectacularly unique. With each pass of the grinding pad a new piece of metal was exposed to the light unveiling fantastic patterns that seemingly danced off the tank, as if it had come to life….. History began!
Racing to the local metal shop and grabbing scraps of metal, DeRubeis began experimenting with different tools to manipulate the way light reacted with the surface. He introduced chemicals and paints to the surface creating unique reactions and bringing his art to life…….Abstract Sensualism was born!
“I favor metal because I can combine a form of sculpture as the foundation for my expression and have found a way to enhance my ability to communicate emotions more intently. All art should inspire and evoke emotion….Art should be something you can actually feel.”
The introduction of his unique style to the art world was met with uncertainty, as galleries had never seen or sold art like it before. It wasn’t long before his innovative style and technique were noticed and galleries across the country began inquiring about his work. Then in 2005 DeRubeis’ work was submitted and honored with two nominations by the First Annual Fine Art Awards televised live from the MGM Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Nominated in the “Mixed Media” and “New Movement” categories, he earned the “MUSE” Award in “New Movement” and is now known as “The Father of the Conceptual Movement.”
De Rubeis, then only 27, dedicated his award to his Grandfather who had passed away just months earlier.
In 2009 De Rubeis was signed by famed art publisher David Smith who immediately saw the future in Chris’s art. Now, DeRubeis is certainly one of the hottest selling artists in the world. His works are on permanent display in high end galleries throughout the United States and abroad. He continues to create new styles and designs for his work, forever changing the way we view art. Yet another unique twist to DeRubeis’ artwork, his pieces are rarely shown in frames. When asked why his work is always “floated,” Chris simply replied with a smile, “WHY NOT!”
As you would imagine, artists are attempting but failing to imitate his style. DeRubeis states,
“You won’t find what I create in any art school…yet.”

Vladimir Kush: A collection of 222 paintings (HD)
Vladimir Kush: A collection of 222 paintings (HD)
Description: Vladimir Kush (born 1965) is a Russian born surrealist painter and sculptor. He studied at the Surikov Moscow Art Institute, and after several years working as an artist in Moscow, his native city, he emigrated to the United States, eventually establishing his own gallery on the island of Maui in Hawaii. His oil paintings are also sold as giclée prints which contributed to his popularity and led to the establishment of further galleries in Laguna Beach, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2011 Kush won the First Prize in Painting at the Artistes du Monde international exhibition in Cannes.
Kush was born in 1965 in Moscow, Russia. After study at the Surikov Moscow Art Institute, he was conscripted into the Soviet Army for two years where he was assigned to paint murals. In 1987 he began exhibiting with the USSR Union of Artists but earned a living drawing portraits on the streets of Moscow and caricatures for a newspaper. In 1990, following his first foreign exhibition in Germany with two other Russian artists, he emigrated to the United States, initially living in Los Angeles before moving to Hawaii where he also worked as a mural painter for the Whaler's Village Museum on Maui. While based in Hawaii, his works received several exhibitions in Hong Kong galleries. Gallery shows followed in Seattle, Pittsburgh, and other American cities, and he eventually opened his own gallery, Kush Fine Art in Lahaina, Hawaii.
He later opened Kush Fine Art galleries in Las Vegas and Laguna Beach, California. Many of his original oil paintings are also sold as giclée prints which initially contributed to his popularity. In 2007 Kush sued the pop singer Pink and her record company for copyright infringement when imagery from his painting (and later giclée print), Contes Erotiques, was used without his authorisation for her 2006 video U + Ur Hand. The case was settled the following year when the singer agreed to pay him undisclosed damages.Prints and an original oil painting by Kush are held in the NaPua Gallery collection at the Grand Wailea Resort on Maui in addition to works held in private collections. In July 2011 his works were shown at the Artistes du Monde international exhibition in Cannes where he won the American First Prize in Painting. He also has a resident show in Las Vegas, Nevada at Caesar's Palace
Kush predominantly works in the medium of oil painting on canvas or board, with many of the original paintings also sold as limited edition giclée-on-canvas prints. His bronze-colored sculptures are small-scale and usually based on imagery from his paintings, such as Walnut of Eden and Pros and Cons. Although his style is frequently described as surrealist, Kush himself refers to it as metaphorical realism and cites the early influence on his style of Salvador Dalí's surrealist paintings as well as landscapes by the German romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Another influence on his work has been the 16th century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, known for his fantastic imagery and sometimes characterised as the pre-Surrealism Surrealist.Wings, ships, and color-saturated seascapes are frequent themes in his paintings, exemplified in the companion pieces, Arrival of the Flower Ship and Departure of the Winged Ship. Flowing water is another recurrent theme, exemplified by Breach and Current. Other works such as Three Graces and African Sonata merge human and animal forms with inanimate objects.
