David’s Been Here explores the Roman Military Base of Viminacium in Serbia a fascinating archaeological park situated where the River Mlava (known as “Margus” in ancient times) empties into the Danube. The area has always been quite fertile, which is why the ancient Romans took an interest to it.
In this episode, David explores Viminacium with the help of Lubomir, an archaeologist who has worked to uncover several of the sites here.
This ancient Roman military fort served at the base for the Seventh Legion Claudia in the fourth century, but it was in use well before that time since the 1st century.
During the reign of Gordian III (239) the town was accorded the status of a Roman citizen colony and the right to mint local currency. Such a status was the highest that could be attained by a town in the Roman Empire. Viminacium was often chosen as a mustering point for troops and a starting point in many a military campaign.”
David and Lubomir walk around one of the covered excavation sites to see the ruins of ancient roads, public bath system, tiles, and human remains in the necropolis. Viminacium is a great day trip from Belgrade especially for history lovers. The site also features a reconstructed amphitheater and beautiful visitors center, modeled after an ancient Roman villa rustica (“domus”). There is also a hotel and restaurant onsite.

Viminacium (Viminacivm) was a major city (provincial capital) and military camp of the Roman province of Moesia (today's Serbia). The site is located 12 km from the modern town of Kostolac in Eastern Serbia. The city dates back to the 1st century AD, and at its peak it is believed to have had 40,000 inhabitants, making it one of the biggest cities of that time. It lies on the Roman road Via Militaris. Viminacium was devastated by Huns in the 5th century, but was later rebuilt by Justinian. It was completely destroyed with the arrival of Slavic in the 6th century.
Today, the archaeological site occupies a total of 450 hectares, and contains remains of temples, streets, squares, amphitheatres, palaces, hippodromes and Roman baths.
Musica Romana is a well-known, internationally-acclaimed music ensemble dedicated to recreating the Ancient Roman music. Among other things, their music was featured the Europa Barbarorum, a video game mod for Rome: Total War.

The reputation of the cultural richness of Viminacium has drawn the attention of not only the domestic but also the international public, who eagerly anticipate that Viminacium will take its rightful place in the first rank of the world’s cultural monuments. It is our expressed intention to uncover this city which has been buried for centuries, to explore it in detail and to interpret the remains for the general public. We sincerely hope that in the years to come Viminacium will become a distinguished symbol of Kostolac and its region and a significant part of the world’s cultural heritage.
The ancient city of Viminacium is unique in many aspects. It is exceptional with respect to the number of excavated graves (over 13,500 graves have been identified) as well as the quantity of artifacts found in them (over 32,000 objects); it is exceptional in terms of the surface area unencumbered for archaeological investigation (over 1,100 acres/450 hectares for the greater metropolitan area and 540 acres/220 hectares in the city territory proper). The remains of Viminacium extend entirely over cultivated fields, and both fragmentary and sometimes whole ancient artifacts lie scattered on the ground surface. All of these factors had to be taken into consideration in defining the objectives of the Viminacium Project, and, consequently, in devising the methods of exploration in the ancient city and military camp at Viminacium. That is why established scientists in various fields – mathematicians, electrical engineers, geophysicists, geologists, petrologists, and experts in artificial intelligence, remote sensing, three-dimensional modeling and formal analysis – were assembled for this project. A step forward had to be taken to move on from just exploring cemeteries, the cities of the dead, undertaken during the last quarter of the twentieth century, to investigating the city and the military camp proper.

In Caesar IV you govern a province (and most importantly its capital city) in the Roman Empire. Success yields political advancement, allowing you to take on a new challenge in another province, as you climb the ladder of power in ancient Rome. As city planner, you design and layout each city in detail, creating road networks to facilitate the distribution of resources, and to provide homes access to entertainment venues, healthcare facilities, fire protection services, and so on. Of course, you must in turn develop these industries and services to meet the needs of your growing population. You control your city's finances, and must quickly turn a profit in your new endeavor or face the wrath of the emperor. You must build a military force and direct the defense of the province against barbarian threats. You must establish far flung trade networks so the exotic wealth of the empire can flow into your province, bringing it fully under the Roman fold. As the city grows from a simple village to a bustling cosmopolitan city, so too do your challenges and responsibilities increase. To achieve your goals as provincial governor in Caesar IV you must consistently provide for your citizens' needs, keep them healthy, happy and safe... and on top of that satisfy the demands of the empire. Your ultimate goal is to rise among the political ranks of the empire, and become Caesar yourself.

Bio je jedan od najznačajnijih legijskih logora na Dunavu, a izvesno vreme i glavni grad rimske provincije Gornje Mezije (Moesie Superior), koja je obuhvatala najveći deo Srbije, severnu Makedoniju i deo severozapadne Bugarske.
