Nuremberg, Germany • a PUB CRAWL through the old city
Things got a little silly after Mel and I explored a castle moat in Nuremberg and met up with fans for a mini pub crawl!
Thanks again to Avis for taking such good care of us.
What to do in NÜRNBERG in 60 seconds
We checked out the laid-back gem Nuremberg – very German and very surprising at the same time. Here’s what the lovely city is all about, in 60 seconds! Includes manatees, cats and – sure, sausages!

It went all too fast? You want the details? No problem.
Here are our recommendations in order of appearance:
00:07 Weißgerbergasse
This little street in old town used to be the home of the whittawers. Also it is the biggest ensemble of half-timbered houses in the city.
00:09 Zum Guldenen Stern
Nuremberg is famous for its small grilled sausages („Rostbratwürste“ – good luck pronouncing that). They are usually served with mustard and sauerkraut. Noone has been serving them longer than the cosy restaurant Zum Guldenen Stern. More:
00:11 Hausbrauerei Altstadthof
Nuremberg used to be the bavarian beer capital with over 40 breweries. The Hausbrauerei is a quite young addition, but uses the legendary rock-cut cellars (see below) to store its beer.
00:14 Handwerkerhof
Built in 1971, this yard is actually a tourist attraction with typical little handicraft stores and restaurants. But even the locals embrace it today as their „little town at the Königstor“.
00:16 Documentation Center
Hitler wanted to build a monumental backdrop for the self-staging of his Nazi Party. Today the unfinished Congress Hall houses the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
00:19 Kettensteg
The oldest intact iron chain bridge of Continental Europe! To us it’s a pretty pedestrian bridge in pretty surroundings.
00:21 Nuremberg Castle
Walk up to Nurembergs beautiful castle. It offers the best views over the city.
00:24 Adlerparkhaus
The second-best views over the city offers this parking garage. Just go all the way to the top and you are surrounded by thousands of red tiled roofs.
00:28 Rock-Cut Cellars
An amazing four storey tunnel system that was used to store beer for centuries. The Hausbrauerei offers fascinating tours through the maze-like cellar-vaults.
00:30
Dürer-Hase
The renowned German Renaissance painter Albrecht Dürer is the most famous son of the city. Beside the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus, there is another quite strange hommage to his work: A hare statue, referring to Dürer’s famous Feldhase painting - which is much prettier, and seen as the prototype easter bunny.
00:32
GoHo
Looking for vintage shops, trendy bars and the occasional hipster running around? Then Gostenhof is the place to be. This quarter nicknamed itself as GoHo.
00:34
Stand Up Paddling
Talking about trendiness: The very sympathetic guys from Boardnerds offer Stand Up Paddling tours and courses on the river Rednitz. A fun way to explore the outskirts of Nuremberg.
00:36
Formula Kart Track
The locals love their racing. Wanna feel like Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel for an afternoon?
00:38
Airtime Trampoline Park
Jump around, jump, jump! Seriously, this was so much fun!
00:40
E4 Bouldering Gym
Europe’s biggest bouldering gym offers something for everyone and is a perfect hideaway for rainy days in Nuremberg.
00:43
Toy Museum
1400 qm of toys! For 600 years Nuremberg has been a city of toy makers. Entering it, you immediately become a kid again.
00:48
Germanisches Nationalmuseum
The biggest cultural-historical museum of Germany. It’s huge! You can spend a whole day looking at exhibits.
00:54
Schöner Brunnen
This elaborate fountain has two rings (a golden and a black one) that can be spun. One is supposed to bring good luck. But which one is the right one? The opinions differ. Try it yourself!
00:56
Blue Salon (Tiergarten)
A dinner at the Nuremberg zoo? No problem – well, at least if you are a company who has the cash to host such an event, organized by the Tiergarten Restaurant Waldschänke. Not for the normal traveler – but so unique!
01:00
Café Katzentempel
Having a coffee while stroking a cat. Is there something more relaxing? We doubt it.
01:02
Ice Tigers
Nurembergers are very passionate not only about their football club 1. FC Nürnberg but also about ice hockey. The atmosphere in their stadium is infectious and watching a game a lot of fun. More:
Stephan Schulz, Mata Hari Bar, Nuremberg - How to take over a bar and make it the most popular...
Providing a great experience for his punters is the driving force behind everything today’s guest does. US soldiers in England, install wire cutters on US jeeps before shipping them to France, during World War II.
US soldiers make field modifications by installing wire cutters on army jeeps, at the D-Day Marshalling Area Camp D4 (Cae House?) in Dorchester, England during World War 2. US soldier paints an angle iron vertical post (wire cutter) fastened on bumper of a jeep. He pastes US flag on the windshield and writes OK in chalk on the front bumper. Line of modified jeeps travel along road after completing check ups. Soldiers use hack saws to cut pieces of metal and hand drills to put holes in bumpers where angle iron wire cutters will be fastened. They use files to take sharp edges off the angle irons. A soldier slips washers and bolts on an angle iron and tightens them with an adjustable wrench. (Note: These angle iron vertical rods, mounted on a vehicle front bumper, were meant to cut wires that might be strung across roads to injure or kill otherwise unprotected drivers of open vehicles, such as Jeeps.) Location: Dorchester England. Date: 1944.

Early, signed edition of Mein Kampf and Speer's leather coat up for auction
Two rare early editions of Adolph Hitler's autobiographical manifesto Mein Kampf could sell for more than 20-thousand US dollars at an online auction on Thursday.
The rare 1925 and 1926 books were signed by Hitler.
Nate Sanders, owner of Nate D. Sanders Auctions in Los Angeles, knows he'll come under criticism for putting the books up for bid.
Being Jewish, Sanders said he understands why people might not like the books being available to the public.
It's a horrible book. But it is a piece of history. It is a very rare item, Sanders said on Wednesday.
Hitler gave the books to Josef Bauer, an early follower who participated in the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich in 1923.
Hitler was arrested and jailed for the attempt to seize power.
He dictated Mein Kampf, two volumes of autobiography and anti-Semitic manifesto, to Rudolf Hess while behind bars to raise money for his criminal defence.
He actually got rich off of it. He originally decided to write it so he could pay his legal bills. Because he was in jail when he wrote it, and he needed to get out, Sanders said.
But eventually he was able to buy a Mercedes-Benz even while he was still in prison.
Both volumes' fly-leaves feature Hitler's signature with best wishes to his friend Bauer for the Christmas season.
Sanders said volumes of Mein Kampf from the 1930s are common, as they were a popular wedding gift in Nazi Germany.
But a copy from the 1920s, signed by the author is rare.
Sanders is also auctioning off a leather trench coat he said was worn by Albert Speer, a Nazi government minister who took responsibility for the Holocaust at the Nuremberg trials and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the Nazi regime.
An Allied soldier found the jacket in a German chateau and stole it, along with a necklace, as a war trophy to bring home to his parents.
The soldier tells the story in a letter to his parents that he signed only Ralph.
Here's a copy of the allied letter from a soldier to his mum and dad, saying that he went to Albert Speer's house in Germany, took the jacket, found the invoice with Albert Speer's name on it inside, said Sanders.
(He) was giving it to his mum and dad as a memento, sort of war loot.
The soldier found a receipt written out to Speer in the pocket of the jacket, Sanders said.
Selling Nazi memorabilia is prohibited in many European countries that saw the horrors of World War II.
Sanders defended collecting historical items connected with the Nazi regime, saying most collectors are military history aficionados.
The same people that buy Adolf Hitler might also buy George Washington. They collect history. They might collect World War II, they might collect George Patton, they might collect Dwight Eisenhower, he said.

Eating an entire classic 28 year old US MRE. Check out how well this one held up - it's a mini food miracle! Shows how well this awesome US Military Ration relic of a menu has held up.
They certainly don't make 'em like they used to! It's all about storage conditions. An MRE is a terrible thing to waste.
