Tallinn Estonia Old Town Walk Margaret Tower Pikk Street Town Square
We continue our journey. Using the Rick Steves travel guide, we start at Fat Margaret Tower and walk along Pikk Street. Fat Margaret was built in the early 16th Century. Called fat because she was the largest part of the city wall's fortifications, and also built to impress visitors coming by ship. So we just followed along Pikk Street till we came to the town square. It was early, around 1000hrs, and many shops were only starting to open.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin in Tallinn, also known as Dome Church is a cathedral church located on Toompea Hill in Tallinn, Estonia. Originally established by Danes in the 13th century, it is the oldest church in Tallinn and mainland Estonia. It is also the only building in Toompea which survived a 17th-century fire.
The steep climb to the cathedral's 69-metre Baroque bell tower shouldn't be missed. It offers an excellent views of the city.

Tallinn Town Hall
Short video introducing Tallinn Town Hall.
Tallinn's Toompea Hill, Estonia
Toompea Hill is the site of the Danish castle that founded Tallinn in 1219 and Danish aristocracy lived there. Surrounded by thick walls and entered by a gate tower, there were cathedrals - including the beautiful Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and my favorite Church to The Blessed Virgin - the pink Parliament building and spectacular views of the city and Baltic Sea.
FYI: The picturesque cobble-stoned streets are murder on your feet!

But one home across the street. There is an exceptionally noticeable signboard. What is it? Glu cigars drinking in winter are Estonian traditional beverages. Gluck warms them with orange and cinnamon in the wine. My body is warm and it is good to taste. Suddenly my throat suddenly became a little surprised, but the taste was good.

Kuid üks koju üle tänava. On erakordselt märgatav märk. Mis see on? Glu sigarid, kes joovad talvel, on Eesti traditsioonilised joogid. Gluck soojendab neid veini apelsini ja kaneeliga. Minu keha on soe ja maitse on hea. Järsku mu kõri muutus äkitselt üllatuseks, kuid maitse oli hea.

TOOMPEA Hill in Tallinn | Šnelli Park
Toompea is a limestone hill in the central part of the city of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The hill is an oblong tableland, which measures about 400 by 250 metres, has an area of 7 hectares and is about 20–30 metres higher than the surrounding areas. In folklore the hill is known as the tumulus mound over the grave of Kalev, erected in his memory by his grieving wife.
The history of Toompea is closely linked to the history of rulers and power in Estonia. Today Toompea is the center of the Government of Estonia and the Riigikogu (parliament), both of which are often simply referred to as Toompea. The location of the Riigikogu is the Toompea Castle, situated in the southwestern corner of the hill and topped by the Tall Hermann tower. The flag on the top of the tower is one of the best-known symbols in Estonia of the government in force. Ever since the German Knights of the Sword first built a stone fortress here in 1227-29, every foreign empire that ruled Estonia used the castle as its base. The castle has been revamped countless times through the centuries, but still retains the basic shape it was given in the 13th and 14th centuries. From its front, visitors can see a pink, Baroque palace dating to the time of Catherine the Great. A look at its opposite side, visible from the base of the hill, gives a much more medieval perspective.
Toompea is part of the Tallinn Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Going through St. Catherine's Passage in Tallinn, Estonia
St Catherine's passage is a small medieval street with things on the... uh... nevermind, you'll love it. Here you'll find one of the most medieval looking alleys in the whole of Tallinn, complete with giant tombstones hanging on the walls. And lots of artisan shops, of course.
Why you should visit it
You'll get a true medieval experience in St Catherine's passage, but to find that place you need to be walking north on Vene street, while scanning the walls to your left for a small gateway. If you reach the Kloostri Ait restaurant, then you need to turn around and try again.

Built up from the 13th to 16th centuries, when Tallinn was a thriving member of the Hanseatic trade league, this enclosed neighbourhood of colourful, gabled houses, half-hidden courtyards and grandiose churches is, quite rightly, the city's biggest tourist draw.
It’s small, compact, and very easily explored on foot.
Tallinn’s Old Town is divided into two areas – the lower town and the upper town.
Those two towns were once separated by gates, almost like two different cities.
Nowadays, the combination of the upper town on the high limestone hill and the lower town at its foot form an expressive skyline that is visible from a great distance both from land and sea.
The lower town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Probably the biggest tourist attraction here, in the heart of Old Town, is Town Hall Square with the Town Hall and its tower.
There has been a Town Hall in Tallinn since at least 1322 and a town square next to it ever since.
On Town Hall Square you will also find the Europe’s oldest continuously-operating pharmacy.
Today it operates as a museum and modern pharmacy.
Major sights of the lower town also include the city wall and its towers.
Originally the almost 4 km-long limestone wall came with 8 gates and 46 towers, today about half of the wall and towers are still standing.
Some of the towers are open to the public, offering a chance to climb up, and possibly even visit a museum inside!
Visitors who are not afraid of heights may go and walk on the town wall and admire the view from the top.
Besides the towers, Tallinn has more than 20 churches, most of them situated in the Old Town.
Be sure to visit Tallinn’s spectacular medieval churches like St. Olav’s, St. Nicholas’, and the Holy Spirit Church, as those are truly magnificent pieces of architecture.
The upper town, Toompea, has always been the seat of power.
The major attractions here are the viewing platforms, Toompea Castle (housing the Estonian Parliament, the Riigikogu), and two churches – St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin, more commonly called Dome Church (Toomkirik in Estonian).
