Virgin Trains First Class | London Euston - Glasgow Central 13/01/2018
In this video, we take a look at what Virgin Trains has to offer for First Class passengers on their Class 390 'Pendolino' service from London Euston to Glasgow Central, as well as points of interest and stations along the route! This journey was made on a weekend, so the weekend breakfast food menu is shown. There are fridges located throughout the first class carriages storing fresh orange juice and bottled water for the journey, which is not shown in the video. I must say, from Lancaster onwards, the scenery is absolutely amazing along the West Coast. This was a very enjoyable experience with Virgin, as per usual, we were mostly on time all the way to Glasgow, maximum 3 minutes late for the whole journey and even a couple of minutes early in some places! A journey that certainly won't be forgotten. Hope you all enjoy and let me know in the comments section if I should do another trip report style video and any improvements I can make on the next one. VIRGIN TRAINS FIRST CLASS from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly | High Speed Rail UK
(First Class experience starts at 2:20). Standard class is available for comparison.
It's my first time to the UK and to riding on the high speed rail, so here are my thoughts.
I travelled on the 11th April. Fares I paid were 45 pounds from Manchester to London (off peak single anytime), and 47 pounds from London to Manchester (first class restricted). The amount paid for the First Class ticket is certainly worth it considering that flights are expensive and that train travel is much faster. The train rides were 2 hours and 20 minutes in both directions, and they get you directly to the city centre of both places. I obtained my tickets through the Virgin Trains website directly.
In addition, first class had meal service and had better customer service overall. Food tasted okay overall though - I think the meals are considerably better if you board the train during the meal times (breakfast, lunch and during dinner). There was free WiFi but it was a little lacking. Power was available on board, which was a huge bonus. The carriages were considerably cleaner although a little bit messy. But then again it's a train and the turnover rates are very high, so no cleaning can be done until the very end. Overall, I'd say that Virgin Trains first class provides very good value for only 10 pounds more (at times, maybe there's a larger increase in fare).

Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!
This is my third Virgin West Coast Trip Report and probably the most comprehensive. I really enjoyed this brief journey, of just over two hours. We travel from London Euston station and head for Liverpool Lime Street. City centre to city centre, it’s 2h12 minutes of pleasant scenery and tasty food, with breakfast served to my seat.
Virgin provide good value for money on this route. My ticket cost around £30 and included lounge access, free WiFi, onboard entertainment, and a cooked breakfast and beverages. Not bad. Of course, you have to book ahead to get the best deals!
Next UK train trip will be uploaded in 4 weeks’ time - it’ll be a belter, the GWR Pullman. Until then, I’ve got three air trips to publish.

UPDATED 2017: a slide show of images in relations to Virgin Trains along the West Coast route. This video was uploaded in 2008, using a range of images available at the time.
Virgin Trains have shaken up the domestic railway industry within the United kingdom, from their introduction of promises of a high speed frequency timetable and stylish state of the art rolling stock. Albeit with rocky beginnings, taking over a dilapidated railway from Intercity and the collapse of Railtrack the journey wasn't smooth.
However flash forward twenty years, it's certainly a success story! It's a brand famous for putting the customer at the heart of what they do, the numbers speak for themselves. Customers using the line have doubled since taking over the service, improvement such as the Pendolinos, services every 20 minutes between London, Birmingham, and Manchester, ticket sales on the internet and of course more recently beaming entertainment to your personal device.
Love them or hate them, they're a success story that Paints the tracks red.

[VIRGIN TRAINS CANCELLED] London Northwestern Railway Birmingham New Street to London Euston
This is a video of me taking the London Northwestern Railway train from Birmingham New Street to London Euston on a Class 350 train. I originally booked a Virgin Trains First Class ticket for this trip, but all Virgin Trains services have been cancelled due to a fatality on the way to London. Since my ticket was now valid on all services to London, I had to rush onto the next London Northwestern train.
Not surprisingly, the train was fully packed, even the First Class compartment. I was forced to stand the entire journey! This train is relatively fast for a London Northwestern service, calling at Marston Green, Birmingham International, Hampton-in-Arden, Tile Hill, Coventry, Rugby, Long Buckby, Northampton, Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction on the way to London. Normally, I would stick my action camera on the window and relax, but this time, I held it in my hand for all those 2 hours or so. There was no time for me to plug my action camera into my power bank, so I waited for the train to reach Northampton, where it stopped for quite a long time, before pausing my camera so I could take the power bank out.
I was very relieved when the train finally stopped at London Euston, my arm could finally get a much needed rest! After taking one last look at the train, I went through the exit gate and straight down to the tube station to get to Central London to meet my mates!
In case you were wondering, I must give some credit to Virgin Trains for their Delay Repay system. I was automatically refunded the full First Class fare within a week of my trip. Also, the train services run by London Northwestern Railways used to be operated by London Midland.

After spotting at Preston & Lancaster, i head to London on Virgin Trains in First Class to catch the last HST'S out of London Paddington. Aboard 390011 to the capital from Lancaster, with stops at Preston, Wigan, Warrington and then direct to Euston.
Class 390 info:
The Class 390 is a type of electric high-speed train operated by Virgin Trains in the United Kingdom. They are electric multiple units using Fiat Ferroviaria's tilting train Pendolino technology and built by Alstom. Fifty-three units were originally built between 2001 and 2004 for operation on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The 8-car units were all later lengthened to 9 cars, then an additional four trains and also a further 62 cars were built between 2009 and 2012. The trains of the original batch were the last to be assembled at Alstom's Washwood Heath plant, before its closure in 2005. The remaining trains in the fleet were built in Italy.
The Class 390 is one of the fastest domestic electric multiple units operating in Britain, with a design speed of 140 mph (225 km/h); however, limitations to track signalling systems restrict the units to a maximum speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) in service. In September 2006, the Pendolino set a new speed record, completing the 401 miles (645 km) length of the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow Central to London Euston in 3 hours, 55 minutes, beating the 4-hour-14-minute record for the southbound run previously set in 1981 by its ancestor, British Rail's Advanced Passenger Train. The APT retains the ultimate speed record for this route, having completed the northbound journey between London Euston and Glasgow Central in 3 hours 52 minutes in 1984 which included a 5-minute delay due to a signal fault. The fleet is maintained at Longsight TMD
Background:
During 1997, private operator Virgin Rail Group started operating the InterCity West Coast franchise, taking over from state-owned operator British Rail. Virgin had been awarded the franchise having made a commitment to replace the locomotives and rolling stock in use on the route, namely the British Rail Class 86, 87 and 90 electric locomotives and Mark 2 and Mark 3 coaching stock, with brand new tilting trains. Following negotiations with several manufacturers, Virgin placed an order with Alstom/Fiat Ferroviaria to produce the envisioned tilting train, which was known by the name Pendolino and was later designated under TOPS as the Class 390.
The purpose of tilt on the Pendolino was to maintain passenger comfort levels when traversing curves at high speed by reducing the sideways forces on the train's occupants, minimising their tendency to slide across the carriage. The train was designed to be visually impressive: the concept design for the Pendolino was originally produced by industrial design firm Priestman Goode in cooperation with JHL and Start Design and many aspects of the finished product, such as the shaping of its aerodynamic nose and much of the train's interior areas, can be attributed to them.
The concept of deploying tilting trains on the West Coast Main Line was not an original one. During the 1980s and 1990s, British Rail had developed several plans to introduce new trains and pursued the development of the revolutionary, but ultimately unsuccessful, Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train (APT) for a protracted period.[10] Some years after the cancellation of the APT, British Rail had intended to replace the existing fleet of trains on the West Coast Main Line (in conjunction with a planned route modernisation) as part of the InterCity 250 project, but this was cancelled by the government shortly before the Privatisation of British Rail during the late 1990s.
The original Pendolino order was for 54 eight-carriage sets, costing £500 million. As originally planned, a pre-series test train was scheduled to be completed and to be in active testing by July 2000, while the first Pendolino was to enter revenue service during March 2001.
The Pendolinos were intended to run at service speeds of up to 140 mph (225 km/h). Railtrack, therefore, embarked on a modernisation of the West Coast Main Line to allow for the faster line speeds. However, the programme ran into serious difficulties. By its end, it was almost four times over-budget, had been delayed by a number of years, and had not improved the infrastructure as much as had been planned. Consequently, and in a manner reminiscent of the introduction of the InterCity 225, the lack of signalling upgrades resulted in the maximum line speed being set at 125 mph (200 km/h). Although the Pendolino's in-service top speed is well below British Rail's hopes for the APT, which was to reach up to 155 mph (249 km/h), it does match the maximum speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) for the APT in passenger service (although one APT set reached 162 mph (261 km/h) in testing).

Virgin Train from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street
As some of you might know, I am a huge, and I mean huge, Beatles fan, and the place in the world I've always wanted to go, as a Beatles fan is LIVERPOOL, England! So finally last week I went there. Caught a Virgin train from London Euston station to Liverpool Lime street station, which normally would take about two hours, but that day a lorry (truck) hit a bridge up ahead of us and our train was delayed about 40 minutes while the engineers were inspecting the bridge.

Video: Heading to London Euston from Milton Keynes Central onboard a Virgin Trains Class 390 Pendolino which made a drop-off stop at Watford Junction. All the seats were completely filled up so I could not sit by a window and film, instead I stood up by the door window which I had never done before on this train. Because this train is a tilting train, doing this was pretty fun and a test of balance as the tilts can be seen very clearly on the footage, the bend through Berkhamsted station was certainly a highlight.

London-Birmingham is a very common route of train in the UK. The train departs London Euston station and after several stops arrives at Birmingham New Street.
Virgin has the fastest trains, but we purchased our tickets with Chiltern, as they had better prices. The trip was about 1 hour longer, but the train was comfortable and had free wifi.
Birmingham is the first city we will visit in the UK. It will be featured in the next vlog.

Something I've been wanting to do a while, a small compilation of the UK's fastest trains doing what they do best, hit speeds in excess of 100mph! From the tilting Pendolino's of Virgin's West Coast Mainline, to the growling East Coast HST's and continent crossing Class 373 Eurostars, this is a collection of my finest shots of these magnificent pieces of kit going at full pelt through the English countryside from 2013 to 2015.
Apologies for the differing sound and visual quality in some of the shots, in that time I changed cameras.
Locations filmed at include Pewsey, Milton Keynes, Wolverton, Alexandra Palace, Ebbsfleet International, Ashford International, Northwick Park and Princes Risborough.

This is a ride on a Virgin Trains service on the West Coast Mainline from London Euston to Birmingham New Street. The train continues on to Edinburgh Waverley.

Something different for the channel this week as I review Virgin Trains Class 390 Pendolino in first class on a trip from London Euston to Birmingham New Street.
After a meeting in London I needed to get back to Birmingham in the quickest way possible and Virgin Trains obliged. Thanks to a great fare I was able to experience the first class service and this video is my view on the experience. Stick around for my final thoughts at the end of the review.
