V&T Departs Virginia City
For the first time in more than 70 years, a steam train made its way between Carson City and Virginia City on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad on Friday, August 14, 2009. An inaugural run featured a ceremonial ride for VIPs, dignitaries, and politicians along a 12.8-mile reconstructed portion of the 16.7-mile original route between Nevadas sister cities.

Virginia City Fire Cart Contest Aug. 2009
Watch the fireman at the end of this run catch the nozzle in the air and hook it up and send the water flowing to the target 250 feet away. Fun to watch. I apologize for the video quality. That camera gave up shortly thereafter and is now in a landfill somewhere.

American Flat is where United States President Abraham Lincoln was going to relocate the U.S. Capital if the Union Army was loosing the Civil War. The idea was to locate the US Capitol in the Comstock due to the profuse abundance of silver for the Treasury and defend the US government from there. The Comstock is why the US Government built a mint in Carson City. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad hauled ore to Carson City refineries and smelters. The railroad is being restored as a scenic tourist line with the most beautiful heavy freight guage track and ballast.

A Ride on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, Part 3
A ride on the reconstructed Virginia and Truckee Railroad, from Virginia City to Carson City, Nevada. This trip takes us over the brand-new track that was built as part of the reconstruction project.
The V&T was built in 1869 and abandoned in 1950. In 1976 Bob Gray relaunched the railroad in Virginia City, and by 1990 was running trains to Gold Hill. The State of Nevada built new track from Gold Hill to Carson City between 2005 and 2009.
Part 3 shows the engine doodling around in the Carson City station, then leaving to head back up to Virginia City.

Part 1 - African Americans on the Comstock
,In this edition of Exploring Nevada, well investigate an exciting archaeological discovery in the heart of Virginia City, in the mountains just east of Reno, Nevada. Its the remains of the Boston Saloon, a popular gathering place for African Americans who lived and worked on the Comstock. Researchers had begun to suspect that African Americans were making significant professional, business and social contributions to the life and times of late 19th Century Virginia City, and the archaeology was to bear this out. In this video, youll meet lead archaeologist Dr. Kelly Dixon of the Comstock Archaeology Center, who relates how five weeks of digging in the summer of 2000 produced a wealth of artifacts, giving solid clues as to how saloon patrons socialized, what they ate, drank and deemed important in their daily lives. Youll also meet volunteer Dan Urriola, who describes how he pieces together the artifacts, Dr. Don Hardesty, who supervised the related University of Nevada, Reno field school, and Nevada Historic Preservation Officer Ron James, who describes why the State of Nevada, through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) helps to finance archaeological investigations. The video also includes a wealth of artifacts and archival resources.
