Virginia and Truckee Railroad -- New Car, Unloading Trucks
This video should have shown me following a new passenger car being trucked into the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Virginia City, Nevada. I was out in Lovelock in the morning and got a shot as the new-old Erie and Lackawanna passenger car passed by with two escorts.
Unfortunately, I did something pretty stupid. I assume the car would follow the same route as the previous two car deliveries. On both those deliveries I acted as the rear pilot car and we came down 95-Alternate through Fernley.
Instead this car went down 95 through Fallon. I missed this detour and didn't catch up with the car again until it was parked at Hwy 50 and Hwy 341, at the base of Gold Canyon.
This video mostly shows the trucks being unloaded, then I am posting two more videos from the next day showing the car being unloaded.
Virginia & Truckee Railroad - May 24, 2014
I ended my spring road trip at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day weekend. Tired of donating cash to Mr. Harrah, I traveled down the hill to Carson City and Virginia City to catch the opening day of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad season. In Virginia City I shot No. 29 assembling its train in preparation for the short trip to Gold Hill where I also shot it as it backed down from Virginia City and returned. At Gold Hill I also shot the excursion from Carson City headed by McCloud River Railroad No. 18 as it pulled hard upgrade to Virginia City.
Nevada State Railroad Museum
Operating at Carson City, Nevada is the Nevada State Railroad Museum. In the heart of Virginia & Truckee territory, there are plenty of opportunities to see classic early steam in action. Every Fourth of July weekend, the museum operates its most popular engines together.
In this video, you will see:
- the official return of The Glenbrook, the 36 gauge 1875-built Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Co. 2-6-0 #1.
- Virginia & Truckee 4-6-0 #25 (built 1905), the main power for the day.
- Virginia & Truckee McKeen Car #22, a 1910 -built motorcar.
- Virginia & Truckee 4-4-0 #22 Inyo, a classic 1875-built American type used in movies including High, Wide and Handsome, Union Pacific, Red River, McLintock!, The Great Locomotive Chase as the Texas, and The Wild Wild West. This is the only day the Inyo is operated.
Virginia and Truckee Railroad DVD
SVS Film DVD 'Making Tracks to Virginia City' is now available in US (NTSC) and UK (PAL) DVD-R formats. Full details at
It features on train, trackside and locomotive scenes of today's Virginia and Truckee Railroad. We meet Bob and Tom Gray, founder and operator of the Railroad, and Bob Gray describes the early years of the Railroad's revival between Virginia City and Gold Hill. There is a tour of the railroad shops, a ride on the diesel powered trip to Gold Hill, and the film concludes with a steam trip over the newly extended tracks from the outskirts of Carson City. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad connected Reno and Carson City with Virginia City Nevada by 1872, bringing mining materials in and taking silver and gold ore out, and was one of the most famous short lines in America. The recently reconstructed 10 mile section to Carson City Eastgate Depot was funded through a combination of county, state and federal grants totalling over $40 million. The line from Gold Hill to near Carson City was reopened over 70 years after it had been abandoned. Tracks are being extended further to follow the Carson River.

The V&T has a very interesting history. We learn a bit about its history, both the original V&T and the current incarnation of it.
Lots of really great video shots of the trains working their daily runs from various places on the line are included, and even some behind the scenes information about operations.
With special thanks to Hunter Lohse for helping film the scenes in this video and John Wiseley for being my High Desert Uber™.

VIRGINIA & TRUCKEE RAILROAD VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Virginia City Nevada was one of our favorite things we did in Virginia City Nevada. This classic short line train goes on a 4 mile RT to Gold Hill Mine and Back. This was such a fun scenic train ride through the historic town of Virginia City. You will have to come ride this with your whole family! For info
Virginia and Truckee Locomotives and the California State Railroad Museum
As part of the 2019 National Narrow Gauge Convention, we went to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento to see their 3 Virginia and Truckee Locomotives.AND we went to Virginia City to ride the V and T.
We also visited the site of the V and T shops in Carson City and take a look at the other surviving V and T locomotives. As well as a glimpse of the models offered of these engines in HO scale and O scale.
From the web:
Gold was discovered in Nevada (then western Utah Territory) in spring 1850, by a company of Mormon emigrants on their way to the California Gold Rush. These early travelers only lingered in Nevada until they could cross the Sierras. By 1858 prospectors were soon permanently camping in the area around what is now Virginia City In 1859, gold was found in outcroppings in the hills and canyons just outside what is now Virginia City. Among the gold ore in these outcroppings were bluish chunks of silver ore which clogged the rockers. Silver was not recognized in this form, so initially, it was overlooked in favor of the gold, and later found to be quite valuable. This was the first of the silver from what came to be called the Comstock Lode.
Initially, the Comstock Lode was a boon for the Virginia City area, as the city grew to over 25,000 inhabitants at its height, and was among the largest and wealthiest towns in the West However, from the beginning, the costs to transport Comstock ore to the mills from points on the Lode (as well, to return with wood and lumber to supply the mines) became so great that many mines were closed and only the higher quality ores were worth processing in the mines that stayed open.
There were many propositions starting as early as 1861 for railroads to service the area and decrease costs. Sharon eventually (with the addition of $500,000 in county bonds to move the railroad), envisioned a railroad to run from Virginia City through Gold Hill where the first of the Comstock Lode was mined, passing the mills along the river, ending at the state capital, Carson City. When finished, this route would cover 21 miles, descend 1,575 feet of elevation and have so many curves as to make 17 full circles in the thirteen and a half miles from the river to Virginia City.
Virginia and Truckee (V & T) Railway
Travel back to the bonanza days on a shorter scenic ride. The conductor tells the story of Nevadas late 19th century mining boom, when the V&T was built and Virginia City was the richest city on earth, with more millionaires than anywhere else. Watch for exposed veins of silver ore and more, including:
• F Street Depot Car Virginia City station, three blocks from downtowns fascinating C Street, with free parking.
• Tunnel No. 4 the last tunnel before Virginia City, one of five built for the 1600-ft. descent to the valley floor.
• Comstock mines and mills a more efficient way to transport the silver and gold from the mother lode to the mills was the original idea behind the V&T Railroad.
• Gold Hill rich in history, where the Comstock Era gold strikes began and the train depot was built at one of the few flat places in town.
Part 2 -- McCloud #18's First Revenue Run to Carson City on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad
Link added to the website shows this with a new whistle in 2013
From July 24, 2010, here is Part 2 showing the first revenue run of the McCloud #18 on the long run to Carson City. These are just a few runbys, and the locomotive is going downhill. It's not as interesting as seeing it go uphill.
For a little more history of McCloud #18, see part 1 of this video.

A Ride on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, Part 3
A ride on the reconstructed Virginia and Truckee Railroad, from Virginia City to Carson City, Nevada. This trip takes us over the brand-new track that was built as part of the reconstruction project.
The V&T was built in 1869 and abandoned in 1950. In 1976 Bob Gray relaunched the railroad in Virginia City, and by 1990 was running trains to Gold Hill. The State of Nevada built new track from Gold Hill to Carson City between 2005 and 2009.
Part 3 shows the engine doodling around in the Carson City station, then leaving to head back up to Virginia City.
