Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, an ancient stone city soars skyward. This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.
The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu.
The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.
Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.
It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor.
The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries.
Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck.

Angkor Wat Temple Hindu History | Siem Reap Cambodia Angkor Wat Documentary
Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត or Capital Temple) is a temple complex inCambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. It was first aHindu and later a Buddhist temple. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer:យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol ofCambodia,[1] appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: thetemple-mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early Dravidian architecture, with key features such as the Jagati. It is designed to representMount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The modern name, Angkor Wat, means Temple City or City of Temples in Khmer; Angkor, meaning city or capital city, is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagara (नगर).[2] Watis the Khmer word for temple grounds (Sanskrit: वाट vāṭa enclosure).[3]

Ancient statue found in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Detail in description
An incomplete piece of a statue measuring over one metre, thought to be an ancient remain, was found in the northeastern corner of Preah Ko temple in Siem Reap province’s Ov Lork village on Monday.
Ly Vanna, director of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventative Archaeology with the Apsara Authority, said the statue was incomplete, noting that only the body was found, while the head, both hands and feet were missing.
“The statue is made of sandstone, and there are carvings that depict a short skirt with fishtail patterns that sits above the knee, along with a belt,” he said. “The kind of clothing is similar to that of Vishnu of Preah Ko style, as a Vishnu statue is currently displayed in the National Museum in Phnom Penh.”
“However, unfortunately the statue does not have a head or hands, which make it difficult to determine. If the statue had four hands, it can be confirmed as that of Vishnu,” he added. “But if it only has two hands, it could be Shiva. However, if we only rely on the outline of the statue, we can conclude that it is Vishnu from Brahmanism.”
He said that Apsara Authority would take the statue to clean and study for documentation before sending it for keeping in Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum in the future.
Thai Mech, a resident who found the statue, was quoted by the Apsara Authority as saying that he often crossed Preah Ko temple moat, but he did not notice the statue before. However, when he passed the area on Monday, he dug the ground and found the statue, which measures 1.14 metres.
“At first, I did not think it was a statue, but looking at the shape of the stone I continued to dig and found the statue,” he said. “Afterwards, I reported it to the Heritage Protection Police for safety.”
First Lieutenant Oun Yong, a heritage police in Angkor Archaeological Park’s Roluos, said people have discovered statues in the past and always reported it to the police for safe keeping and research.

Chisor Mountain: An ancient Cambodian temple on a hilltop in beautiful Cambodia filmed in B&W.
Is it worth the two hour trip from Phnom Penh? Some say yes...others say no! If you've never been to Angkor Wat, then Chisor Mountain is just right for you. Phnom Chisor, or Chisor Mountain, is less known and less visited. The views from the temple, and the ruins of the temple itself are truly awesome. There's hardly anyone else around when you visit, so enjoy the freedom of this hidden gem. Make sure you bring your own water for the 412 step marathon - it's around 15 minute climb or more. Once you get to the top, head down the steps to the temple itself. There are plenty of sellers asking you to buy drinks when you get back to the bottom.A fresh coconut costs only Riel 3000.Have a great time and let us know how it went.

Some history on Phnom Chisor:
Phnom Chiso (often spelled “Phnom Chisor”) is a 100 m high solitary hill in Takeo Province, with a temple of the Angkorian era on top of it. Phnom Chiso is situated about 70 kilometers south of Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, close to National Road 2. The ancient monument with its superb view to the surrounding paddy area is a perfect destination for a daytrip from Phnom Penh that can be combined with sightseeing at the lake Tonle Bati and its nearby Angkorian Ta Prohm temple. On the way there is the opportunity to visit the notorious Killing Fields.
The northern access way is a bumpy road. The southern path, starting at the main car park and restaurant area, is made of a long cement stairway of 412 steps. Before Cambodian pilgrims climb the hill, they usually pray and burn incense in small shrines for Hindu and local deities.
The original name of the Angkorian temple is Sri Suryaparvata or Suryagiri, both Sanskrit names meaning “mountain of the Sun”. It was not dedicated to the Sun god Surya but to Shiva in the first place and also to Vishnu. The name “Surya” is an abbreviation of the founder’s name, Suryavarman I, who ruled in Angkor during the first half of the 11th century and who is one of the most significant kings in the Khmer history. Though not a too ambitious temple builder inside Angkor he contributed much to the development of important other temple structures in the whole empire, e.g. at Preah Vihear in northern Cambodia, a larger monument than Phnom Chiso, sited on a mountain even more spectacularly. Phnom Chiso’s or Suryagiri’s main shrine contained a Lingam called “Suryavarmeshvara”, combining the name of the king with one name of Shiva (Ishvara) and meaning “Suryavarman, lord of the world”.

24 Hours In Cambodia | Private Sunrise Tour $110- WORTH IT?
Since I went to Siem Reap alone, I got a private guide and driver. Let's get this out of the way first, How much did it cost? It cost me $110 USD , for a 10 hour experience. Now the cost would be reduced by almost half if you were with a friend, and a third if you with another, and so on, and so forth. I felt this was the best choice for me, to get the full experience, be able to video and speak freely, and move about in as little or as much time as I wanted. Plus, he took some really awesome photos for me! The entrance fee is $20 (£15) to $37 (£28) for a one-day pass, a three-day pass from $40 (£31) to $62 (£48) and a seven-day ticket from $60 (£46) to $72 (£55)
The visa system was extremely efficient. Don't forget to bring a photo, but if you do, they have people who can photograph you at an inexpensive cost, but it'll take time. For me, I had a photo with me and filled out the visa form in line- it took me about 10 minutes.
That evening, I went to the market to buy some clothes that will cover my knees and shoulders. The temples have a strictly enforced, no exposed body parts, rule.
The first temple I went to, is Angkor Wat and I went at 5am for sunrise. I enjoyed the whole experience, albeit tiring.
I just wanted to say, at about 4:50, the statue isn't a hindu statue but rather a buddhist statue with a buddhist robe, but an example of one is in 6:40 (Hindu God Vishnu with a Buddhist robe). To get the full effect of the echo room: listen with headphones- the reverb is seriously cool!
The second temple I went to is Phnom Bakheng Temple. It has 5 tiers and overlooks Angkor Wat. The third temple is called Bayon Temple- a temple known for the many heads that face in all directions. It's really magnificent there.
Ta Keo Temple is fourth- beautiful too- lots to steps though. But what really stood out to me about this temple is kindness. I joined some locals for beers ($1USD), and there was a chance you'd win another beer with the beer (it was one of those, lift the top of the can, kind of contest/games). I bought a round ($6USD) and won a free beer too. It's ridiculous, a drink in Canada is about $10...
The fifth and last temple is Ta Prohm Temple- tomb raider temple had a lot of really interesting tree growth. By this time, I was sooooo tired. So it was nice to end the tour with a Hollywood film location :)
That evening, I took the tuk tuk (the motorcycle buggies) to the circus (Phare). For $18 USD, I'd recommend it. It's interesting, teaches you a bit about culture, it gives you a chance to support local artists.

INDIA is a country of temples without equal but there is a certain irony in that one of the largest and most dramatic monuments to Hinduism rests not in India but thousands of miles away from the subcontinent amid the ruins of a metropolis hidden in the jungles of Cambodia. One of the largest cities of the ancient world, Angkor was built at the height of the Khmer Empire's supremacy in South East Asia. In the 12th century the vast temple of Angkor Wat, which is larger even than the Vatican, was built in the heart of the city by King Suryavarman II to honor Lord Vishnu.
Angkor Wat, originally named Vrah Vishnulok - the sacred abode of Lord Vishnu.
As I walked along the huge, ancient stone of the causeway leading to Angkor Wat, I was forced to look inward and question my own significance in the universe. Everything here, from the huge moat protecting the complex to the giant nagas flanking my path, is designed to make one shrink before the majesty of Vishnu.
After passing through a succession of courtyards, each grander and more elaborate than the last, I arrived at an enormous Meru with its five soaring peaks and exquisitely carved walls. What a spectacle this all must have been long ago....Angkor Wat is the representation of the Khmer universe, reflecting a relationship to nature on such a deep level, that it makes modern architecture seem spiritually empty. The soul of the Khmer is alive in these temples and mirrored in the faces of today's Cambodians, the recipients of a rich artistic and spiritual heritage. - Jon Ortner
Mouhot wrote: What strikes the observer with not less admiration than the grandeur, regularity, and beauty of these majestic buildings, is the immense size and prodigious number of the blocks of stone of which they are constructed. In this temple alone are as many as 1532 columns. What means of transport, what a multitude of workmen, must this have required, seeing that the mountain out of which the stone was hewn is thirty miles distant!....
Henri Mohout could hardly believe his eyes in 1860. He wrote of:
ruins of such grandeur, remains of structures that must have been raised at such an immense cost of labor, that, at the first view, one is filled with profound admiration....One of these temples - a rival to that of Soloman, and erected by some ancient Michael Angleo - might take an honorable place besides our most beautiful buildings. It is grander than anything left to us by Greece and Rome, and presents a sad contrast to the state of barbarism in which the nation in now plunged. To Mahout, those prodigious works were nothing short of astounding.

ANGKOR Wat's distinctive terraced towers rising above the skyline are in the form of lotus buds, one of Lord Vishnu's principal symbols. It was a place of devotion as well as an astronomical observatory. The legend was that the temple was not built by human hands but by Indra, the Lord of Heaven, who sailed down to earth for the purpose. Originally all nine great pinnacles were plated with gold, while the sculptures of incredible richness, covering the walls in high and low relief, were ablaze with color.
The central shrine contained a gold statue of Vishnu mounted on a garuda, which was taken out of its sanctuary on festival occassions.
The approach to Angkor Wat is dramatic in the extreme. The deep shade of encircling jungle opens on to a spacious expanse of water, shimmering in the sunlight, the great moat, some 600 ft wide enclosing a rectangle nearly a mile square. A single monumental causeway lined by a magnificent balustrade of hooded serpents and lions spans the moat, like an umbilical cord, affording access to the triple entrance gateways, the two wide-spreading, arcaded galleries, forming a composition no less than eight hundred feet in width.
Itself a stupendous work of architecture, the proplylaeum provides a fitting prelude to the breathtaking vista that expands before one's gaze on emerging from its dark, deliberately constricted chambers.
A thousand foot long, raised, processional way, flanked midway by elegant library pavilions and later by immense reflecting pools -- microcosms of the Cosmic Oceans -- leads to a cruciform podium from which the sovereign could watch processions and the performances of the temple dancers; and up to the main structure. Here is the apotheosis of the abode of the Devarja, a temple-mountain of stupendous proportions flaring skyward in a vision of otherworldly splendor. Each of the terraces of the three-tiered pyramid has continuous galleries accented with gateways and towers, elaborate stairways, and the plan is further enriched by additional 'libraries' and subsidiary cruciform galleries.
The miracle of Angkor Wat lies, above all, in the ensemble; in the fact that these numerous and complex elements have not merely been combined in an assemblage but have been orchestrated into a stupendous symphony in stone; that a Euclidean clarity of form in the total layout can be intuitively sensed by the spectator even if it can only be confirmed from the vantage point of the gods -- or modern man: the air.

This beautiful Cambodian style Vishnu statue is a replica of an antique Vishnu statue located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in the Cambodian National Museum. Just like in the original, Vishnu is missing his entire right arm and the forearm of his left arm. He holds a conch shell in his raised left hand with his right hand holding a fruit. He wears a traditional dhoti around his waist and a Cambodian style head dress. His torso is bare. He has broad features and a square face which is typical of Khmer iconography.
He is hand carved from sandstone and stands upon a solid Paduak wooden block base. The sandstone is the same sandstone that Angkor temples are carved from. A beautiful sculpture!

The Bayon (Khmer: ប្រាសាទបាយ័ន, Prasat Bayon) is a well-known and richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the centre of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom.[1][2] Following Jayavarman's death, it was modified and augmented by later Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.
