Greenpoint, Polish Neighborhood in Brooklyn to Frédéric Chopin
Greenpoint is the northernmost neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, in the U.S. state of New York. It is bordered on the southwest by Williamsburg at the Bushwick inlet, on the southeast by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and East Williamsburg, on the north by Newtown Creek and Long Island City, Queens at the Pulaski Bridge, and on the west by the East River.
Originally farmland – many of the farm owners' family names, such as Meserole and Calyer, are current street names – the residential core of Greenpoint was built on parcels divided during the 19th century, with rope factories and lumber yards lining the East River to the west, while the northeastern section along the Newtown Creek through East Williamsburg became an industrial maritime area. It is now known for its large Polish immigrant and Polish-American community, and it is often referred to as Little Poland. )
Williamsburg is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, bordering Greenpoint to the north; Bedford–Stuyvesant to the south; Bushwick, East Williamsburg, and Ridgewood, Queens to the east; and Fort Greene and the East River to the west. Part of Brooklyn Community Board 1, the neighborhood is served in the south by the NYPD's 90th Precinct[3] and in the north by the 94th Precinct.[4] In the City Council, the western and southern part of the neighborhood is represented by the 33rd District; and its eastern part, by the 34th District.[5][6] As of the 2010 United States Census, the neighborhood had a population of 32,926, an increase of 2.0% from the 32,269 enumerated in 2000.[7]
Williamsburg was, during the early 2000s, an influential hub of contemporary music like indie rock, and is attributed to be the place of origin of electroclash and had a large local hipster culture, a strong art community and vibrant nightlife. Thus, it also earned the nickname Little Berlin.[8][9] The area experiences a steady gentrification. Many ethnic groups have based enclaves within the neighborhood, including African Americans, Italians, Jews, Hispanics, Poles, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.

BRAKING: Twenty Thousands Orthodox Jews Protest Israel and Forced Draft Law, Brooklyn NY, June 11/17
BROOKLYN, N.Y., June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Roughly 20,000 gathered together on Sunday, June 11th, at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to demonstrate against the state of Israel's policy of forcibly drafting religious Jews, and crushing any peaceful opposition with brutal police crackdowns and imprisonment. The gathering was organized by the Central Rabbinical Congress of the United States and Canada, and it was also headlined by an international delegation of Rabbinic leaders from countries including Israel, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada and Argentina. It also served as a kick-off for the international Let Our People Go campaign to raise awareness on the issue and to call for international intervention.
Rabbi David Niederman, Intergovernmental Liaison for the Central Rabbinical Congress, stated: Israel's policy violates our right as conscientious objectors in regard to military service. Religious Jews oppose to the creation of the State of Israel before the coming of Messiah, and they can't serve in its army. Additionally military is incompatible with the observance of Torah and Mitzvos (religious service), said Rabbi Niederman. International law under Section 18 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights demands for exemption of military service based on ones' sincerely held conscience. Unfortunately, it is a right that the Israeli government has withheld from our community.

20,000 Turn Out for Rally at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Protesting Israel’s Forcible Military Draft and Persecution of Religious Jews
Since the state's founding in 1948, yeshiva (religious seminary) students were exempted from military service. That exemption expired in 2014 and since then, the Israel Defense Forces has started to forcibly draft the Orthodox community. The Let Our People Go campaign was created in order to pressure the Israeli government to rescind the new draft law. It is nearly impossible to remain an observant Jew in the Israeli military, said Samuel Stern, of Let Our People Go. The early Zionist leaders created the IDF not only as a means of self-defense but also as a means to indoctrinate new citizens with a nationalistic way of thinking… that's not what Judaism is about.
The past several months has seen a drastic increase in violence as the Israeli government has stepped up efforts to draft the religious community. Peaceful protests have been broken up with tear gas and batons; men, women, and children have been arrested on false charges; and in May, 28 employees of an Orthodox newspaper were arrested for publishing content that was critical of the IDF's drafting policy.
We want the international community to recognize our right to refuse military service and to exert pressure on the Israeli government to grant our brothers and sisters the most basic freedoms, said Niederman. Israel claims that it is the only democracy in the Middle East, but terrorizing innocent citizens because they don't want to fight in the army is not behavior that one would expect from a democracy.
Various speakers and Rabbinic leaders called upon the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to pressure them to restore freedom of expression and peaceful assembly for its religious citizens, something that the international Jewish community has long been advocating for.
One of the rally's speakers, Rabbi Yakov Shapiro of Bayswater, NY, explained the event's purpose: Ben Gurion called the Israeli army a 'melting pot.' He said it was designed to – quote – 'clean, refine and purify' the Jews of their 'foreign garbage'; to 'educate' them and provide them 'cultural elevation.' Sounds more like a rehab than an army. Indeed it is! Shapiro concluded with a defiant message: What the IDF wants to rehabilitate us from, we would give our lives to retain.

What is Hasidic Judaism? A Brief History of the Movement
What is Hasidic Judaism? Watch our new explainer video to learn the history of the Hasidic movement, from the Ba’al Shem Tov to creating an distinct community of mystical and observant Jews.
The Hasidic movement was formed in the mid 1800s by Jewish mystics in Eastern Europe, most notably the Ba’al Shem Tov, who was a traveled Kabbalistic, providing spiritual advice to those he met. He introduced mystic rituals where everything became spiritual. His students (i.e. Dov Ber) would later create the movement of Hasidism. But many Jews at that time were opposed to this new emerging movement. The Hasids were prayer enthusiasts. When they prayed, they would jump, clap, somersault, and even cry.
Despite opposition, the Hasidim continued to grow, engulfing most of Eastern Europe. They became part of the community, by serving as spiritual advisers, koshering meats, attending to the ill and deceased, and more. They continued to thrive until the persecution of Jews in the Soviet Union and World War II either killed them or drove them to seek refuge elsewhere. Some Hasids that escaped, traveled to America and began the rival of the movement which we see today most prominently on the streets of Brooklyn, New York.

Orthodox Jews Burned Israeli Flag in International Ceremony Demonstrating the essence of the Jewish Holiday of Purim
Anti-Zionists Jewish communities burned the Zionist flag in a series of ceremonies around the world on the Jewish holiday of Purim, today Sunday, March 12.
Ceremonies were held in several cities in the Holy Land, the United States, Canada and United Kingdom.
“The Zionist experiment has reached its inevitable conclusion. Death tolls mount and no viable solution is in sight. Slowly the Jewish people are awakening to the reality of Zionism, its rejection of Torah views of exile and redemption, combined with its aggressive stance towards Gentiles in general and Palestinians in particular” said Rabbi Elhonon Beck from London.
The Rabbi explained, “By burning the Zionist flag we are symbolically declaring that the Zionist state, contrary to its absurd claims, is not representative of the Jewish people. In fact, its denial of our faith and its brutalization of the Palestinian people, renders it antithetical to Judaism.”
The timing of the flag burning is seen as particularly significant. “Today is Purim, a holiday remembering the victory of faith over barbarism and good over evil, in ancient times. It is appropriate that we repudiate the contemporary heresy and violence of Zionism on this day,” Rabbi Beck added.
“Zionism refuses to accept our status as people in exile. This is metaphysical impudence. It is the task of world Jewry to remain patriotic citizens of the lands of their dispersion and pursue peace with all men. In the Holy Land, this means welcoming Palestinian sovereignty over the land. Accordingly.”
“The rejection of Zionism is the only path to peace.”
Brooklyn Jews welcome increased security
(30 Dec 2019) Residents in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn welcomed the increased security in the wake of Saturday's stabbing in nearby Monsey, New York.
Outside the Chabad Lubaviech world headquarters, members of the civilian patrol Guardian Angels met with residents and offered assurances of safety.
People are happy to see us because we stand out. You know, NYPD is doing an awesome job, but for some reason they see us standing out more, said mary gethins, a member of the Angels.
Grafton E. Thomas, 37, was held without bail after appearing in federal court in White Plains on five counts of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by attempting to kill with a dangerous weapon and causing injuries in the Saturday attack.
Authorities said a blood-stained 18-inch (45-centimeter) machete was recovered from his car.
Handwritten journals containing anti-Semitic references were found in the home of the man charged with federal hate crimes Monday in the stabbing and slashing of five people celebrating Hanukkah at a rabbi's house north of New York City, authorities said.
The stabbings on the seventh night of Hanukkah come amid a series of violent attacks targeting Jews in the region that have led to increased security, particularly around religious gatherings.

America needs Jews just like you!! UN General Assembly, New York City, September 27th, '18.
Thousands of members of New York’s Orthodox Jewish community, organized by the Rabbinical Alliance of the USA, protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who addressed the UN General Assembly I'm September 27th '18. The demonstration held in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in Manhattan, 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, Thursday September 27 at 5:00 PM.
Protesters intend to focus on the fact that since the passing of a 2014 law, the Israeli government has been forcing Orthodox Jewish young men to serve in its army. Recently, they have been enforcing the laws more strictly, and cracking down violently on anyone who speaks out. Those who refuse to comply with the draft, due to their religious convictions, as well as those who protest against the law,are treated brutally. Hundreds of boys and even girls have been thrown into prison.
“We are going to send a message to the United Nations that Benjamin Netanyahu does not represent the Jewish people or the Jewish religion,” said Rabbi Aron Jacobowitz, a spokesman for the group. “According to the Jewish religion Jews are forbidden to create a sovereign state or wage wars against other nations, therefore the State of Israel is in total violation of Judaism. Authentic Jewry never recognized the State of Israel and therefore refuse to serve in the Israeli army”
“Anti-Zionist Jews, as conscientious objectors, deserve the right to be exempt from service in the Israeli army, as set down in UN Commission on Human Rights resolution 1998/77.
“The recent forced military draft of religious Jews against their religious convictions is a violation of the freedom of religion of these communities, and the cruel oppression of protesters is a violation of the universal freedom of speech. This is another stage in their on going efforts to force the remaining authentic Jews to take part in their criminal movement. Their intent is to uproot religious Judaism.
“All that our communities in the Holy Land want is to live in peace with their non-Jewish neighbors and practice and preserve the Jewish religion, as we did prior to the establishment of this political State of Israel. We do not desire power or domination.
“The Zionist movement came to execute a transformation of Judaism from a religion to nationalism, therefore the Zionist state’s claim to be a “Jewish” state is the worst kind of identity theft. The State of Israel is not Jewish at all, and its ongoing actions do not represent world Jewry. The ongoing crimes committed by the state against the Orthodox community prove once again that they don’t represent the religious Jews living in the Holy Land, let alone those around the world.”
Rabbinical Alliance of the United States and Canada is an umbrella organization uniting dozens of congregations with the goal of strengthening Judaism in Jewish communities around the world.
