Hoopers Island Maryland - Gravel Beach
Hoopers Island, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Upper Island just north of the bridge on a sunny, breezy day in early June 2014. Gravel beach on inland side of the island, which is very narrow at this point. The island is one of the earliest areas settled in Maryland in the 1600s. Accessible by bridge, it is still somewhat isolated. It is said that the island residents were composed of just 10 families for 300 years. In 2014 it is home to five of Maryland's seven remaining small crab processing houses. Home to many of the dwindling number of Chesapeake Bay watermen.
