Chateau in the Auvergne - France - exquisite renovation ref: 100833NCR03
Chateau page here
Elegant 16th century Chateau / castle entirely restored, with outbuildings and 30 ha of land. In the heart of the Bourbonnais area, home to the last and most famous royal house of France, stands this elegant castle, surrounded by an enclosed park of 8.6 ha. The property is situated close to the famous spa town of Vichy, with its imperial parks, designer shops and opera house. Within walking distance of the small local village, you will find a peaceful, intimate and refined lifestyle in this beautifully restored château.
THE CASTLE
You enter the property via the front gates, gilded in fine gold.
Dated from the first half of the 16th century and in a classical L shape, the castle consists of 2 separate architectural entities:
• a main building, flanked by a pavilion and by a round tower
• a wing, flanked by a round tower
The property comprises 18 rooms, accommodating around 740 m2
The layout is as follows:
The main building, built over cellars, consists of:
• 1 large kitchen with 2 back kitchens
• 3 large communicating state rooms (dining room, living room and video room)
• 5 bedrooms
• 4 bathrooms
• 2 shower rooms
• 2 offices
• 1 lobby
• 1 laundry room
• 8 toilets
• Convertible attics with former servants rooms
Possibility to create more bedrooms.
The wing, former service quarters, consists of:
• 1 very large vaulted exposed stone reception room
• 1 smaller reception area with summer kitchen
• 1 utility room
• 3 bedrooms
• 2 shower rooms
• 3 toilets
The castle and the outbuildings have been listed since 1947.
THE INTERIOR
The layout is very contemporary and functional, both in the main building and in the wing, with the living area situated on the ground floor and the more private night-time area on the upper levels.
The simple and harmonious geometry of the castle and of all its rooms creates beautiful and elegant volumes with a great fluidity of circulation.
The ornamentation in the main building, dating from the 18th century, is very delicate with classic geometric panels framed by very fine moldings, counter-balanced by antique-style ribbon-shaped flower friezes. The wing, on the other hand, is characterised by the omnipresence of natural materials such as exposed stone and wooden beams.
Using only a narrow palette of colors and neutral tones, the discreet decor and the purist renovation throughout both the main building and the wing have created a minimalist and elegant design where the curves of the middle ages meet the straight lines of the classical era.
THE LAND AND THE OUTBUILDINGS
Several outbuildings complement the property: a large barn with an adjacent store room and dovecote, the former stables and gate house and the underground wine cellars.
The castle is nestled in an enclosed wooded park of 8.6 ha, where there is a natural spring flowing through it and a small pond. The property overlooks around 21 ha of agricultural land and a small plot completes the property.
THE RESTORATION
The property has been entirely restored for over 1 Million Euros. Completed in 2014, it involved both structural and finishing work on the castle and on the outbuildings.
The works included the recovery of degraded exterior coatings, the insulation of the attic in the main building, extensive external and internal woodwork, revision of the entire wooden flooring and the restoration of the plasterwork and of the painting of the entire castle and wing (interior and exterior).
The roof is in excellent condition after defoaming and a precedent restoration by the previous owners.
ENERGY
The electricity has been entirely redone, adding new underground cables and new distribution boards.
The heating system was completely modified and the entire property is now heated by 2 wood-pellet boilers (Okofen Pelletronic) fuelled by 10 tons of pellets, stored in two 5-ton silos located in the cellar.
These renovations have brought the heating charges down to a minimum : around 2700€ p/a.
SECURITY
Special attention has been paid to making the property as safe as possible.
A centralized system (Central Galaxy Flex) with smartphone management guarantees maximum outdoor and indoor protection.
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
The bedrooms have been renovated in the spirit of a chambre d’hôtes activity.
With the possibility to farm around 21 ha of agricultural land, the property is situated in the wine producing area of the labelled « Val de Loire » wine and on the border with the AOC Saint Pourçain vineyards. The village produces red, white and rosé Val de Loire wine labelled IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée).
With dedicated wine cellars, the property has the potential to become a wine producing château.
Château de Chambert - Grand Vin 2012 - Cahors
Château de Chambert - Grand Vin 2012 - Cahors tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Dark purple almost opaque colour. Floral nose of violet with blackberry, plum and cassis with some meaty notes. Dense and youthful palate, still with a tannic presence and slight firmness but nice layers of dark floral fruit, a mild spiciness and integrated oak, and a rather long finish. A slight tannic touch, should still get some time to soften.

Air France's Joon Airline Business Class - A340 300 Paris to Cape Town - Business Traveller
Flight Review. Air France's new millennial airline, Joon. In this flight review, Tom Otley, Editor of Business Traveller, flies on the Joon inaugural flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to Cape Town South Africa, on the Airbus A340 - 300 in Business Class.
Video transcript:
- - Well here we are on board the inaugural flight of Air France's Joon, which is the millennial airline down to Cape Town from Paris, Charles de Gaulle. We set off quite early. I think it was 9:40 departure, and it's a flight time of about 11-1/2 hours. I'm in the business class cabin, which I'll show you more of in a moment. We were greeted on board, jackets taken as normal. Water, champagne, orange juice offered. So the business class cabin that you get on this A340 is to all intents and purposes the same that you would have got before, when it was an Air France one. But just to show you the cabin, and also indicate which I thought were the best seats. Before we set off, I had a look 'round, and this is what I thought. So the cabin on the Joon business class has four rows of seats A and C on one side, but in the center, it's got another set of double seats. There are actually six rows in the center. Then on the far side there, there are five sets of seats. Window seats look good, but of course when the seats are fully reclined, you have to climb over the person who's on the aisle. You don't have direct aisle access. For that reason, a lot of people prefer to be on these aisle seats, which would be either the ones in the center, or the aisle seats on the windows. The configuration is five, A, C on this final row where I'm standing, and then you've got D, H, L, and J. So that's D and H in the middle, and then J and L. Being the millennial airline that Air France wants Joon to be. The colors are nice and bright. Got these bright blue pillows. The blankets and the, I believe those are the amenity bags in there. We'll have a look at that in a minute. As you can see, the overhead lockers aren't the largest. So, for instance, with that standard size wheelie bag, you do have to turn it sideways to get it into the overhead locker. And then we've got a little amenity bag here which I was gonna show you. So it has this bag, for shoes, I believe. It's got covers for the earphones. It's got a pair of slippers, you see those there, slippers. And a pair of flight socks. As well as the slippers and the flight socks, you get a little amenity bag with an eye mask, ear plug, toothbrush, toothpaste, and some Clarins products. Well, just one, a Hydra-Essentiel, think it's a moisturizer. Then some pillow mist. Cabin is about 3/4 full for the inaugural. I'm in the back row on this left hand side, which is 5A, a window seat. Luckily for me, 5C is vacant next to me. Most of the passengers are towards the front of the aircraft so row six, which is just there, is empty. There's only two seats there. The two center seats in five are empty as well, so I'll be able to take some pictures and show you what the aircraft is like. It's an A340, and it's an Air France A340, the sort of which they've had for many, many years. I've done a flight review previously on the A340, and that was probably back in 2004. So it looks exactly the same in terms of the seats, but they've been refreshed. New seat covers, that sort of thing. Then I was told actually it is new seating in premium economy, and economy. Probably as much as anything, so that they can put power into the seats. But also the new seats are more comfortable. I don't think they've actually crammed in more seats, but I'll go back and have a look maybe later on. Each seat has its own reading light so you can read undisturbed, or not disturbing your neighbor during the night flights. The seat has controls here. These don't actually do anything. So if you want to recline, you'd press this, and if you want to go back up to sitting, this is your one. Then the tray table comes out the side here. It's a pretty good design because it rests on the arm here. What that means is that actually it's very firm for when you want to work or eat. Under there, you can see that you have the control, but also your headphones and water. Then down here, there's the USB and the power. Power is for US and EU only, not UK. So this is the bed in the fully flat position, or as fully flat as it goes. Strangely, there's a sort of small gap there between the bed and the foot stool. Okay this being a millennial airline, there's actually quite a complicated thing to do with the wifi. There is no wifi on board, or not wifi that you can buy, but what you can do is stream to your device, presumably over wifi. The intention is for there to be wifi on Joon flights, but that's not gonna happen till they get the A350s............

VILLAGE IN FRANCE DESTROYED BY THE GERMANS IN WW2.
(ORADOUR SUR GLANE) Towards the end of the Second World War, in a peaceful part of France, there took place a particularly horrible murder of 642 men women and children.
On the 10th of June 1944, a group of soldiers from the Der Fuhrer regiment of the 2nd SS- Panzer Division Das Reich entered and then surrounded the small town of Oradour-sur- Glane, near to the city of Limoges.
At first, they told the Mayor, Jean Desourteaux, that there was to be an identity check and that everyone must go to the Champ de Foire (fairground) whilst this took place. After rounding up all the inhabitants that they could find, the SS then changed their story from that of an identity check, to one of searching for hidden arms and explosives. The soldiers then said that whilst they searched for the arms, the women and children must wait in the church and the men in nearby barns.
The women and children were marched off to the church, the children being encouraged by the soldiers to sing as they went. After they had left, the men were divided into six groups and led off to different barns in the town under armed guard. When the townspeople were all safely shut away the SS began to kill them all.
A large gas bomb, seemingly made out of smoke-screen grenades and intended to asphyxiate the occupants, was placed in the church, but it did not work properly when it went off and so the SS had to use machine guns and hand grenades to disable and kill the women and children.
After they had subdued all the occupant of the church, the soldiers piled wood on the bodies, many of whom were still alive and set it on fire.
Only one person managed to escape alive from the church and that was Madame Rouffanche. She saw her younger daughter who was sitting next to her killed by a bullet as they attempted to find shelter in the vestry. Madame Rouffanche then ran to the alter end of the church where she found a stepladder used to light the candles. Placing the ladder behind the alter she climbed up and threw herself through a window and out onto the ground some 10 feet below. As she picked herself up, a woman holding her baby tried to follow, but they were seen by the soldiers and both woman and child were killed. In spite of being shot and wounded five times, Madame Rouffanche escaped round the back of the church and dug herself into the earth between some rows of peas, where she remained hidden until late the next day. At the same time that the gas bomb exploded in the church, the SS fired their machine guns into the men crowded in the barns. They deliberately fired low, so that many of the men were badly wounded but not killed. The soldiers then piled wood and straw on the bodies and set it alight, many of the men thus burned to death, uable to move because of their injuries. Six men did manage to escape from Madame Laudy's barn but one of them was seen and shot dead, the other five all wounded, got away under cover of darkness.
