Located 500 meters away the mainland, Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a place of great scenic beauty, historical importance and religious significance. Undeniably one of the most popular places to see in Kanyakumari, this rock is considered to be holy as well as an architectural wonder. Vivekananda Rock Memorial is one of the two rocks located slightly away from the mainland.
On this rock, a captivating memorial of Swami Vivekananda has been built which was inaugurated in the year of 1970. This was to honour the great saint and leader of India, Swami Vivekananda who has visited Kanyakumari in 1892, a few days before leaving for Chicago for World Religious Conference. He had then visited the rock and meditated here for two days.
The religious importance is this rock owes to the belief that this rock has imprint of Goddess Devi Kumari’s feet and hence it is said to be blessed. Sripada Mandapam and Vivekananda Mandapam are two places to see here on the Rock memorial.

Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial:
Memorial to Swami Vivekananda has been built on a rock situated some 400m offshore. In fact, there are two rocks side by side projecting out of the sea. The rock is approachable only by boat which provides a pleasure cruise into the sea.
Swami Vivekananda came down to Kanyakumari on 24.12.1892 before his departure for Chicago to participate in the World Religious Conference in 1893. He sat on meditation on this rock for two days and became a powerful spiritual leader and philosopher. The Memorial inaugurated in 1970 and is a blend of various architectural styles of India. It is an architectural masterpiece. The Memorial was constructed in 2081 working days with an average of 650 men working. The Memorial consists of two main structures.
Towards the end of 1892, after three years of wandering across the length and breadth of India, a young monk found himself at Kanyakumari, the southernmost point of the country. To quell the questions raging in his mind, he leapt into the sea and swam across shark-infested waters to reach a holy rock in mid-sea—the very last bit of Indian land.
On the rock, he meditated, taking in the whole of India as it were, from that vantage point. At the end of three days and nights, the monk found enlightenment on his life’s mission: to arouse the nation from its dismal slumber of a thousand years of slavery and rediscover its past glory.
Thus was born on that rock, Swami Vivekananda—the spiritual teacher, prophet and patriot-monk of modern India. The rock became doubly blessed.

At Kanyakumari - a unique symbol of unity and purity - is the Memorial of Swami Vivekananda, another symbol of the united aspiration of Nation. In the Memorial, there is a happy and harmonious blend of all the architectural beauty of the country. It is a symbol of unity because the whole nation wished, worked and contributed for it. Person from all states participated in its inauguration. It is also a Memorial, conceived by all strata of society including hardwark by RSS swayamsevaks, blessed by Ramakrishna Mission, designed by Paramacharya of Kachi Kamakoti Peetham, and for which Swami Chinmayananda of Chinmay Mission gave the first donation.
All the spiritual,culture and national organisations supported it.It is also a Memorial for which all State Governments and Central Government contributed. Thus, the memorial became a focal point just as Kanyakumari is a meeting point for three seas.
Inaugurating the Rock Memorial on September 2, 1970, the President of India Shri V. V. Giri called upon fellow Indians to rise to the call of the nation.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a popular tourist monument in Kanyakumari, India. It was built in 1970 in honour of Swami Vivekananda who is said to have attained enlightenment on the rock. Adjacent to Rock Memorial is The Thiruvalluvar Statue which is a 133 feet tall stone sculpture of the Tamil poet and philosopher Valluvar. It is currently the 25th tallest statue in India.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a sacred monument and popular tourist attraction in Vavathurai, Kanyakumari, India. The memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters off mainland of Vavathurai, India's southernmost tip. It was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee in honour of the visit of the great spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda to Shripada Parai during the month of December 1892 for deep meditation and enlightenment. He swam to this rock and meditated about the past, present and future of India. It is said that he attained enlightenment on the rock, and henceforth became a reformer and philosopher.
From very ancient times, the rock has been regarded as a sacred place. The mythical tradition states that it has been known as 'Sripada Parai', meaning the rock that has been blessed by the touch of 'the sacred feet' of the Devi Kumari. On the rock is a projection similar in form to a human foot and a little brownish in complexion, which has traditionally been venerated as a symbol of Shripadam. According to legend, it was on this rock that Devi Kumari performed austerity.
A meditation hall (Dhyana Mandapam) is also attached to the memorial for visitors to meditate. The design of the mandapa incorporates different styles of temple architecture from all over India. It houses a statue of Vivekananda. The merger of three seas - Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean can be seen from these rocks.
Led by the concerted efforts of Shri Eknath Ranade, who made it his life mission to establish the memorial and the Vivekananda Kendra, overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles of politics, funding and labour, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial was dedicated to the nation in 1970.
The memorial consists of two main structures, the Vivekananda Mandapam and the Shripada Mandapam.

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, visited Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari from December 25 & 26, 2019.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that we have gathered at a place which continuously emits to us highly positive vibes. It was this spiritual power of the rock at the very feet of Bharat Mata which drew Swami Vivekananda to Kanyakumari in his quest for inner peace. On this day 127 years ago, in 1892, Swamiji began deep meditation on this sacred spot. In three days and three nights, a simple monk transformed himself into an enlightened being and a global messenger of Bharatiya Sanatan Dharma Sanskriti. Swamiji attained enlightenment here and sparked a unique spiritual revolution. It was not for an individual’s own salvation; it was for the rejuvenation of the religious values of the motherland and service of its people.
In this context, let me recall letter by him written on 19th March, 1894, Swamiji wrote about his plans. He envisioned selfless sannyasins going from village to village, educating people and working to improve their condition. He wrote, We, as a nation, have lost our individuality, and that is the cause of all mischief in India. We have to give back to the nation its lost individuality and raise the masses.”

History ::
In December 1892, Swami Vivekananda reached to Kanyakumari, and in temple he did SHASHTANG to Maa Kanyakumari with full emotion.
From there he see twin rock in mid-sea, and found that Maa Kanyakumari did her TAP, so he jump in Sea and reach there and did Meditation for beloved mother BHARATMATA.
He did meditation from 25th December 1892 to 27th December 1892, 3days & 3night on past, presence & future of BHARAT and got inspiration to carry the message of ancient India to the western world, which he did like cyclonic monk in World Parliamentary of Religion in Chicago September 1893.
Since his first speech in opening of World Parliamentary or Religion he become world famous. Swami Vivekananda was not the man to flee from triumph any more than from battle. He addressed people everywhere and said that the honour shown to him was the honour shown to the ideals the country had held dear from time immemorial.
To commemorate the historic meditation of Swami Vivekananda on the mid-sea rock at Kanyakumari on 25th, 26th and 27th December 1892, a magnificent memorial has been constructed. It was inaugurated in 1970 and has since become a point of National Convergence. Over the years, this concrete symbol of inspiration has drawn millions of pilgrims and provided them inspiration to serve the society.
As the Vivekananda Rock Memorial was taking shape, Shri Eknathji Ranade also envisaged a mission that would manifest the idea of Man-making and Nation-building. The result was the conception and formation of the Vivekananda Kendra as a spiritually oriented service mission, which reflected Swami Vivekananda's vision of glorious India in action. The Vivekananda Kendra is an eternal call for those youth who aspire to dedicate their life to serve the nation. It aims at national reconstruction through Man Making. To mould dedicated workers, the Kendra adopts a methodology unique to it by organising 'Yoga Varga' (classes), 'Samskar Varga', 'Swadhyaya Varga', 'Kendra Varga' and various training camps.

During his wandering years Vivekananda had experienced the sufferings and problems faced by common people. The poverty, lack of self-respect and education pained him. He wanted to help these poor people. He wanted to restore the dignity and self-respect of these people.
When Vivekananda reached Kanyakumari on 24 December 1892, he was still unable to formulate any idea to help the masses of the country. In Kanyakumari, he swam across the ocean to reach a large mid-sea rock. There he sat on the rock and started meditating on India's past, present and future. His meditation on the last bit of Indian rock (later known as the Vivekananda Rock Memorial) continued for three days from 25 to 27 December. Here he had a vision of one India and came up with a solution in the form of resolution, which is popularly known as the Kanyakumari resolve of 1892. The purpose of the 'resolve' was also to organize sannyasins for social service.

विवेकानन्द रॉक मेमोरियल को 1970 ई0 में नीले तथा लाल ग्रेनाइट के पत्थरों से निर्मित किया गया था। यह समुद्रतल से 17 मीटर की ऊँचाई पर एक पत्थर के टापू की चोटी पर स्थित है। यह स्थान 6 एकड़ के क्षेत्र में फैला है।
ऐसा माना जाता है कि विवेकानन्द कन्याकुमारी आये और इस पत्थर तक तैर कर गये और गहरी ध्यान की मुद्रा में रात बिताई। इसके बाद उन्होंने अपने आप को देश की सेवा के प्रति समर्पित करने और वेन्दान्त संदेश को सारे विश्व में प्रसारित करने का निश्चय किया।

Kanyakumari , also known as Kanniyakumari, formerly known as Cape Comorin, is a town in Kanyakumari District in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The name comes from the Devi Kanya Kumari Temple in the region. It is the southernmost tip of peninsular India. Kanyakumari town is the southern tip of the Cardamom Hills.
The Thiruvalluvar Statue has a height of 95 feet (29 m) and stands upon a 38 foot (11.5 m) rock that represents the 38 chapters of virtue in the Thirukkural. The statue standing on the rock represents wealth and pleasures, signifying that wealth and love be earned and enjoyed on the foundation of solid virtue. The combined height of the statue and pedestal is 133 feet (40.5 m), denoting the 133 chapters in the Thirukkural. It has a total weight of 7000 tons.The statue, with its slight bend around the waist is reminiscent of a dancing pose of the ancient Indian deities like Nataraja. It was sculpted by the Indian sculptor Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati, who also created the Iraivan Temple.
The Gandhi Memorial Mandapam has been built on the spot where the urn containing the Mahatma's ashes was kept for public viewing before immersion. Resembling central Indian Hindu temples in form, the memorial was designed in such a way that on Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, the first rays of the sun fall on the exact place where his ashes were kept.
