LIVE: Putin opens Moscow’s biggest mosque
Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to inaugurate Moscow’s biggest mosque on Wednesday, September 23. President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev and President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas are due to attend the ceremony. Muslims make up roughly 14 percent of Russia’s population and about 300,000 of them live in Moscow. The new mosque, which will be the seventh in Moscow, is expected to help decongest other mosques in the city, which are inundated by the capital’s growing Muslim population.

Moscow mosque opens its doors to non-Muslims
(28 Mar 2016) LEAD IN:
An open day at Moscow's Cathedral Mosque has attracted a large crowd.
Both Muslims and non-Muslims had the opportunity to explore the building and its artefacts.
The mosque, which recently reopened after years of restoration and renovation, hopes to become a centre of social and religious life for Muslims in the Russian capital.
STORY-LINE:
The gleaming domes and spires are a recent addition to Moscow's skyline.
Moscow's new Cathedral Mosque was opened to the public late last year.
And today the mosque has opened its doors to non-Muslims.
A long queue gathers at a display case. Inside there's an important artefact - the 'Hair of Mohammed'.
This was a gift from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov when the mosque opened in October, 2015.
The mosque's leaders believe this building is important for the country's Muslims.
The mosque is a kind of spiritual shelter, where a person either turns into nothing or is revived. The Moscow Mosque is the main mosque in the whole of Russia. It is a central mosque and it attracts many people, and today we wish to have more non-Muslims here, says Eldar Alliutdinov, Imam of Moscow Cathedral Mosque.
He says Russia's 20 million Muslims live alongside the predominantly Christian population in harmony.
Muslims in Russia are not aliens, they are not people who appeared here a hundred years ago. They are natives, and even many historians argue about this - about who was here on this land earlier, says Alliutdinov.
Muslims or non-Muslims, without divisions along the lines of nationality, have been living next to each other from time immemorial, they live as neighbours. It's true, there were different times - you can have a look at history. But this is not the situation we see in Europe or in America (where there are divisions).
Around two million Muslims now live in Moscow, after an influx from the North Caucasus republics of southern Russia, Azerbaijan and the former Soviet states in Central Asia.
The city also has long had a sizeable Tatar minority.
Part of the day's programme is a Quran reading competition, where children under 14 put their skills to the test.
A crowd gathers to hear the children perform and amongst them a regular visitor to the mosque – Mohammed.
In general there is no such thing as persecution (of Muslims) as some people say. I live, I'm a Muslim. Everything is very peaceful, no one bothers me. What's important is to be a good man, a moral man, and there will be no problems whatsoever, he says.
There are extremist movements - but don't go there, don't become a radical. Live as a common man lives. Have common sense. Everything is very good. No one interferes, no one oppresses.
Also on offer is a guided tour around the mosque, a chance for visitors to learn more about the building and its artefacts.
And Moscow businessman Hadji Ilhomidin Kadirov has come here to pray with his family.
The new mosque has transformed the way he worships.
Everybody knows that 10 to 15 years ago - it's impossible to imagine now - a billion Muslims in the world knew that when we prayed, marked Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha), or took part in Ramadan, we sat in the street, on the pavement and prayed under rain and in slush and in snow, he says.
But today the almighty has given us an opportunity such as a multi-storied, beautiful mosque where we can pray, both on regular days and on Fridays.
Brightly coloured pictures of mosques are displayed on easels in one room of the building.
The artworks are produced by children who are busy working away on their masterpieces.
Away from the events of the open-day, prayers continue as usual.
Built on the site of a smaller, more than 100-year-old mosque destroyed in 2011, it can accommodate 10,000 worshippers.

RUSSIA: MUSLIM LEADERS DISCUSS CHECHNYA WITH PUTIN
Russian/Nat
Muslim leaders in Russia have met with the acting Russian president Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
The religious leaders met to discuss the current crisis in Chechnya, and to show Putin their support.
Support for Putin was indicated in a meeting with the High Mufti Talgat Tajuddin, the Muslim spiritual head for European C-I-S countries.
Russia began its campaign in Chechnya in September, after rebels invaded the Russian republic of Dagestan.
As a result Russia controls most of Chechnya.
But It has sunk into lawlessness since rebel fighters drove out Russian troops at the end of the 1994-96 Chechen war.
Putin gave a warm welcome to the High Mufti Talgat Tajuddin and many other religious Muslims who joined him for discussions at the Kremiln.
And though many Muslims have been slain in the conflict, Tajuddin stressed that the war in Chechnya is not a fight against Islam, but for the reestablishment of law and order in the region.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Many emissaries and missionaries of different extreme sects have entered Russia en mass for instance Wakhabbism. They have brought us much sorrow, much blood and tears. We can see in Chechnya and what in Dagestan. Muslims in Russia clearly understand the war in Chechnya is not a war against Islam and Muslims but the fight for reestablishment of law and order. That is why the Muslims of Russian fully support the actions of acting president Vladimir Putin and the Russian government in Chechnya.

STORYLINE
Russian Muslims attended prayers at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque on Friday to celebrate the first day of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha.
The holiday is known to Russian and Central Asian Muslims as Kurban Bairam.
Worshippers packed into the mosque for a prayer ceremony led by the head of the Council of Muftis of Russia, Ravil Gainutdin.
Police closed the streets around the mosque for security reasons, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency reported.
After the prayers, people gathered outside the mosque to watch a sheep being sacrificed.
Muslims traditionally celebrate Eid al-Adha with the sacrifice of animals - usually cows and goats - after ritual prayers in mosques.
They distribute the meat among family, friends and the poor in remembrance of the willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son to God.
Eid al-Adha also marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
The Hajj must be carried out at least once in a lifetime by any Muslim who has the ability to do so, as one of the five pillars of Islamic faith.
This year, 20,500 Russians went to Mecca for the Hajj, 5,000 fewer than last year, because the quota was reduced due to fears over the spread of swine flu, Itar-Tass reported.
Eid al-Adha is a one-to-three day celebration, and in Muslim countries is a public holiday.
It is also a time when they visit family and friends as well as offering presents.
At Eid it is obligatory to give a set amount of money to charity to help the poor buy new clothes and food so they too can celebrate.

RUSSIA: RUSSIA'S MUSLIMS MOURN DEATH OF KING HUSSEIN
Russian/Eng/Nat
Russia's Muslims have joined millions of mourners around the world in paying tribute to
King Hussein of Jordan, who finally succumbed to cancer on Sunday,
King Hussein was well known to the Russian government and especially to Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, an Arab specialist.
The Russian Foreign Ministry praised the late monarch as a corner stone of the Middle East peace process.
And President Boris Yeltsin cabled King Hussein's successor, King Abdullah Bin Hussein, with his condolences.
At Moscow's main mosque on Sunday, Muslims from across Russia began to pay their respects to King Hussein of Jordan.
Islam is one of Russia's main religions and Imam Rais Belal said his mosque would definitely hold a service of remembrance.
He paid tribute to Hussein's leadership and his dedication to the peace process in the Middle East.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Of course Hussein made a big contribution to solving the Arab conflict, which has gone on for so long. Of course, as a politician, as an intelligent and just politician, we are mourning for him and want the positive steps he began in Jordan to continue after his death. We don't want there to be a surge of chaos in Jordan.
SUPER CAPTION: Imam Rais Belal
Many Russian republics are predominantly Muslim, like Chechnya in the Caucasus.
It's still part of Russia, even after an 18 month independence war, but many Chechens are in Russia as a result of that instability in their home republic.
At the mosque, elderly men from this breakaway republic promised to pray for the dead Jordanian king.
Their personal experiences mean they can well appreciate Hussein's never-failing commitment to peace, like when he attended the Wye peace conference a few months before his death, visibly weakened by lymphatic cancer.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
He played a big role in peace between the Palestinians and Israel. Therefore it would have been better if his life could have continued.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We will definitely pray for him and ask Allah to let his give his soul peace.

On Friday, anticipating King Hussein had only a short time left, Russia's Foreign Ministry paid tribute to the monarch.
Spokesman Vladimir Rakhmanin said Russia hoped Hussein's contribution to peace would live on.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We have respect for this great man. He did a lot for our bilateral relations. He did a lot for the Middle East peace process. And we expect his achievements and endeavours will continue.
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Rakhmanin, Russian foreign ministry spokesman
Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov will most likely represent Russia at the king's funeral.

Khabib meets Putin after McGregor victory (ENGLISH SUBS)
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov on his convincing UFC victory over Conor McGregor, and Khabib's father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov on raising such a good athlete, during a meeting in Ulyanovsk on Wednesday.
Commenting on the brawl that erupted following Khabib's victory, the Russian leader remarked that there were some unwritten rules that all fighters should follow.
However, the president stated, I will ask your father not to punish you very cruelly because you accomplished the main aim, you won.
Meanwhile Putin noted that Russia is one big family and that if we are attacked from the outside, not only you, we could all jump in such a way, and there could be hell to pay. But it's better to avoid such course of action.
Of course, I have not controlled myself in some moments, because there were provocations even during the fight. I hope that the court which is going on now will be in our favour, Khabib replied.
TRANSCRIPT:
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): I would like to congratulate you one more time on the victory. And I would like to congratulate the father on bringing up such a good fighter.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): Yes, of course you did not represent a team, you were on your own, you did not perform for the country but you performed for yourself. But still you are a Russian citizen and we are not indifferent to our citizens, no matter where they are and what they do. That is why we were witnessing attentively, we were worrying about you. I will ask your father not to punish you very cruelly because you accomplished the main aim, you won, won with dignity and [it was] convincing.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): I believe that all of us in our country are one big family. No matter what happens, we need try and avoid rashness like charging someone, regardless what is going on.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): Anything can happen in the family, but we never allow ourselves to cross the line. Of course, if we are attacked from the outside, not only you, we could all jump in such a way, and there could be hell to pay. But it's better to avoid such course of action.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): It is a commercial kind of sport but still a sport. And I cannot disagree with those who think that some rules should be followed, not just written ones but also general athletic and moral rules. I hope that in this kind of sport everyone will follow these rules.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): In the end we will find a way for [ensuring] normal communication, friendship - between men and athletes. Sport is dedicated to these goals exactly. And with your opponents you will have good, kind, competitive, but kind relations.
SOT, Khabib Nurmagomedov, UFC Fighter (Russian): For now they are only talking about my jump, even though I performed quite well. In comparison with his behaviour, his disrespect towards me, my parents, my country, I behaved with dignity. Of course I have not controlled myself in some moments, because there were provocations even during the fight. I hope that the court [decision] which is going on now will be in our favour.
