S1E1 - 'Monkey Business' || Show notes: U.S. Senate budget deal, most vexing words of 2012, and outlandish price tags for New York City real estate. || Show transcript below. ||
|| Show transcript ||
(Jack) Hello, and welcome to 'Monkey Business' for January 1, 2013. Here's what we're reading today with our morning coffee:
Members of the U.S. Senate have agreed on a budget deal that temporarily delays spending cuts, and puts off tax hikes for all but some of the wealthiest Americans. In their sights are households with incomes greater than 450,000 U.S. dollars annually.
In a late-night New Year's Eve session, the bill was approved by a vote of 89 to 8 at about 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, with the majority of representatives of both political parties supporting the change.
The move nudges the U.S. economy back from the edge of a 'fiscal cliff,' but additional changes might be in the offing, to rein in budget deficits that've seen U.S. debt spiral to $16.4 trillion.
The debate next goes to the House (U.S. House of Representatives).
[Additional reading - Budget deal in play]
For more on that story, just browse the links in the infobox. This will be the story to watch, since U.S. stock exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX, all options exchanges) are closed today for New Year's Day.
And, over to Marcel, for Nearly News.
(Marcel) Lake Superior State University, in Michigan (United States) releases an annual list of words people never want to hear again.
One of 2012's most annoying phrases, according to votes at the university's site, is 'fiscal cliff.' It came in number one on the list of phrases that language lovers most want to see disappear, never to be heard from again.
Also not so much a fan of the fiscal cliff - although in this case, due to obliviousness - are the future buyers of three bits of New York City real estate.
What fiscal cliff? They know not of this - not when the price ticket for any of these three properties is between 95 and 100 million U.S. dollars.
The most absurdly expensive Manhattan listings of 2012 are a home in the Sherry-Netherland on Fifth Avenue and a property at 15 Central Park West, both for listed for $95 million, and the Woolworth Mansion - a bargain at $90 million, no?
The most expensive listing of the year is a penthouse on West 56th Street, for 100 million U.S. dollars - it features 135 windows, a wine cellar, and 360-degree views.
Of course, for a 360-degree view, you can always just...turn around. Voila. For free.
You can browse a gallery of images in the link in the infobox. Do you know, they've also provided floor plan maps of the properties.
That's considerate. For 95 million, a property should at least come with a map for when you forget where you are.
There are seven bedrooms and seven baths in the co-op? How nice for absent-minded people; if you fall down somewhere after a night ringing in the new year - like me - and you're totally lost somewhere in your own house, then just...stay there.
Then when your guests want to find you, they can ring you on their phone:
'Where are you now?'
'Somewhere.'

And that's today's 'Monkey Business.' Take care, folks. Because it's a jungle out there. (TM)

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Making American Music - Nancy Dawson
With the support of the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation and the John Hammond Performance Series Endowment, the National Museum of American History is pleased to have begun its first artist in residence program and music internship program, “Making American Music.” The program seeks to assist and encourage young musicians and enrich the experience of thousands of people visiting the Smithsonian in person and online.
Here, our interns, The First Ladies, perform the song Nancy Dawson.
About the program
The Artist
Inaugural Artist in Residence, Dom Flemons, is a Grammy winner as well as a founding member of the celebrated Carolina Chocolate Drops. Flemons is known as “The American Songster” since his repertoire of music covers nearly 100 years of American folklore, ballads, and tunes. He is a music scholar, historian, record collector and a multi-instrumentalist (Banjo, Fife, Guitar, Harmonica, Percussion, Quills, and Rhythm Bones). Flemons is currently creating two albums for Smithsonian Folkways Records.
The Interns
Hannah Baker is a graduate of the American Roots Music program at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She plays guitar and fiddle and is a skilled singer-songwriter with a recently-released debut EP and a passion for historic music research. Her current topic of study is the role of race in American roots music.
Kelly Bosworth is a graduate student in the Ethnomusicology program at Indiana University. She plays guitar and is a singer-songwriter as well as an educator – teaching harmony, folk singing, and guitar. Kelly’s research interests include vernacular music, community music-making, and social justice.
Rose Rodgers is a graduate of the University of California Santa Cruz. She plays flute, sings and is proficient in historical research with primary documents. Her research is currently focused on the role music has played in building communities against social inequality while providing a voice for marginalized peoples.
Libby Weitnauer is a graduate student in the Music Performance program at New York University. She plays violin and sings. She hopes to one day create a music program that combines her passion for Appalachian fiddle music with research into displaced populations throughout American history and how they have used music to connect to each other.

What Cocktails Look Like Around The World
Cocktails differ around the world based on alcohol of choice and origin story. You’d be surprised at how some were invented. For example, the Kir Royale was created with Aligoté after Nazis confiscated all of Burgundy’s finest red wines. Other creations, like the Italian negroni, were as simple as just replacing soda water with gin.

America’s First Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship
Since its heyday in the late 1800s, bare-knuckle boxing in the US has been relegated to parking lots and grimy basements, an underground sport that couldn’t find a way to bring itself above board. But in June of 2018—after spending years petitioning almost 30 states to sanction the brutal fights—promoter David Feldman finally managed to stage America's first-ever legal bare-knuckle boxing match in Wyoming.
VICE went to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships in Cheyenne a few days ahead of the big event to hear how Feldman managed to pull it off, and to meet a handful of fighters for whom boxing—and even MMA fighting—just isn’t hardcore enough.

Voices of Change: Performing Modern Classical Chamber Music
Voices of Change: Performing Modern Classical Chamber Music
Voices of Change Modern Music Dallas
Voices of Change is the Southwest's premiere professional chamber music ensemble dedicated to the performance of music of our time. Now in its 39th year, Voices of Change fills a unique niche in the music world by performing small ensemble works by 20th and 21st century composers, encouraging and preserving the impulse of musical creativity and imagination.
Founded in 1974 by pianist Jo Boatright and clarinetist Ross Powell, Voices of Change is one of the longest-lived and most distinguished new music ensembles in the United States. In 1999, Voices of Change was a finalist for the prestigious Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Small Classical Ensemble. The CD, Voces Americanas, features works of five living composers of Hispanic descent. The Grammy nomination is a first for any Dallas/Fort Worth area chamber music ensemble. Voices of Change has been awarded the annual ASCAP Award for Adventuresome Programming an unprecedented five times and has recorded LPs and CDs on the CRI, Crystal, Innova, Albany, Centaur, and Redwood labels.
The artists are first-tier professional musicians playing music written by well-known and up-and-coming professional composers. The music of living composers is challenging and requires the skill and dedication of accomplished classical musicians to be played.
The ensemble has been privileged to host more than one hundred composers who have come to hear, discuss, and often participate in the performance of their pieces. Voices of Change has presented over 75 world premieres (more than 25 of which were commissioned by the ensemble), performed music by over 300 composers, and made numerous recordings, including five CDs. Voices of Change is also dedicated to commissioning new works and recording them. The ensemble co-produces an annual young composers competition to introduce and support the music of promising college and high-school composers.
Voices of Change is supported by:
The City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs,
Aaron Copland Fund for New Music,
BMI Foundation
Louise Kahn Fund of the Dallas Foundation
Target Corporation,
Texas Commission on the Arts

The Beethoven, the Debussy, the Corigliano of tomorrow -- they are all out there. We deserve to hear them, and they deserve to be heard ...Voices of Change, Dallas' enduring new-music chamber music ensemble, has built its reputation and educated area audiences with an eclectic approach, programming a strong mixture of 20th-century classics and new, innovative works by living composers.
