Fissure 8 continues to erupt lava into the perched channel leading northeastward from the vent. Lava levels in the upper channel between Fissure 8 and Pohoiki Rd. are low this morning but are expected to rise after the next collapse/explosive vent at Kīlauea summit. Overnight, the diverted channelized ʻaʻā flow west of Kapoho Crater advanced to the ocean destroying the Kua O Ka La Charter School and Ahalanui Count Beach Park and establishing a robust ocean entry. Despite no visible surface connection to the Fissure 8 channel, lava continues to ooze out at several points on the 6 km (3.7 mi) wide flow front into the ocean.
Fissure 22 has no visible activity. No other fissures are active.
Pele's hair and other lightweight volcanic glass fragments from the lava fountain at Fissure 8 continue to fall downwind of the fissure, dusting the ground within a few hundred meters (yards) of the vent. High winds may waft lighter particles to greater distances.
Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.
USGS personnel conducted helicopter overflights of the Volcano Village, Volcano Golf and Country Club, and National Park areas to map ground deformation. Flights will begin around 7 AM and continue throughout the day.

Fissure 8 continues to erupt lava into the perched channel leading northeastward from the vent. The channel is full but not quite up to the rim; there were no significant overflows this morning. The southern margin of the flow remained about 1 km (0.6 mi) from Isaac Hale Park this morning. Despite no visible surface connection to the fissure 8 channel, lava continues to ooze out at several points on the 6 km (3.7 mi) wide flow front into the ocean. Explosions were reported from the main ocean entry this morning with at least one being quite strong.

Hawaii Residents Coping With Volcano Danger
(17 May 2018) Ash emissions from the summit at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano decreased, prompting the cancellation Wednesday of an ash fall advisory.
There are occasional bursts of ash coming from the crater causing ash to fall downwind to several communities, though there are only trace amounts, said the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Ash plumes on Tuesday had spouted as high as 12,000 feet (3,657 meters) into the air, scientists said.
Some residents were getting on with life on the Big Island Wednesday – on a golf course within view of the ash plume and a few miles from the entrance to the currently-closed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Lava was at our place, so I'm told by the historians and geologists, about 500 years ago lava was where we live. Will it come again? Yeah probably, but hopefully not in my lifetime. We live on a volcano, said island resident Ken McGilvray.
The plumes are separate from the lava eruptions happening about 25 miles (40 kilometers) away from the summit, where about 20 lava fissures have destroyed more than two dozen homes and forced the evacuation of about 2,000 residents.
Dense, large rocks roughly two feet in diameter (60 centimeters) were found in a parking lot a few hundred yards away from Kilauea's summit crater, which reflect the most energetic explosions yet observed and could reflect the onset of steam-driven explosive activity, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement, and continues to monitor activity.
Earthquakes continue to shake the Big Island, with the most severe at around 8:30 a.m. producing a 4.4 magnitude quake. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no tsunami alert at this time.
Scientists say earthquakes may shake loose rocks underground and open up new tunnels for lava to flow.
Hawaii Gov. David Ige said the state is forming a joint task force that could handle mass evacuations of the Big Island's Puna district if lava from Kilauea volcano covers major roads and isolates the area. The troops may be needed for emergency evacuations, search and rescue, clearing debris and other duties.
On Tuesday, the volcano discharged ash because of rocks falling into the summit, U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Mike Poland said.
Scientists remained on alert for more violent activity. Geologists have warned that the summit could have a separate explosive steam eruption that would hurl huge rocks and ash miles into the sky. But it's not certain when or if that might happen.
For those on the ground near the lava vents, health warnings were issued because of dangerous volcanic gases.
An air-quality alert was in effect for an area near the Lanipuna Gardens subdivision. That area was evacuated shortly after the eruption began May 3. Most fissures are in that subdivision or the adjoining Leilani Estates neighborhood.
Several fissures remained active Wednesday, producing lava spatter. Lava from one fissure that had been clearing a path toward the ocean, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) away, had not advanced in the last 24 hours.

Volcano Forces Closure of Popular Hawaii Park
(11 May 2018) Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closing to the public due to growing risk of an eruption at the park's famous Kilauea Caldera.
Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater in the kind of explosive eruption last displayed nearly a century ago.
Scientists said Wednesday the risks of an explosive summit eruption will rise in coming weeks as magma drains down the flank of the volcano toward the area where began erupting lava in a residential neighborhood last week.
A summit explosion could also release ash, steam and sulfur dioxide emissions.
Kilauea has destroyed 36 structures — including 26 homes — since it began releasing lava from vents about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of the summit crater. There are now 15 of the vents spread through Leilani Estates and neighboring Lanipuna Gardens.

New Hawaiian Volcano Fissure Prompts Evacuations
(14 May 2018) A new fissure in Hawaii's Puna District sent gases and lava exploding into the air, spurring officials to call for more evacuations as residents waited for a possible major eruption at Kilauea volcano's summit.
Hawaii County Civil Defense issued an emergency cellphone alert after the fissure was discovered early Sunday morning.
The agency said one unidentified structure was destroyed by the new vent, bringing the total number of homes and other buildings lost to the lava to nearly 40.
Residents in the immediate area were told to evacuate, and two nearby community centres were serving as shelters for people and pets.
Lava spread across hundreds of yards of private land and loud explosions rocked the neighbourhood not far from Leilani Estates subdivision, where more than a dozen other active vents have opened in the past week.
Nearby resident Richard Schott, sat near a police checkpoint and watched as the eruption churned just over a ridge line and behind some trees.
I've actually seen rocks fly over the tree line and I can feel it in my body, Schott said. It's like a nuclear reaction or something.
The new opening was still showing signs of activity Sunday afternoon.
The fissure measures about 1,000 feet (300 meters) long, officials said.
The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said new fissures, ground deformation and abundant volcanic gases indicate eruptions on the eastern flank of Kilauea are likely to continue.
Christian and Maritza Ricks, who moved to the area from California in April, stopped on the side of the road to watch and listen to the latest eruption.
I guess it's just part of living on the island, Ricks said.
He said he wasn't really afraid of the destruction happening around him. In a way it's kind of exciting to see what's going on and be this close to it.
Most of the lava outbreaks have occurred in and around the Leilani Estates neighbourhood, where molten rock has burst through the ground, destroying more than two dozen homes and resulting in evacuation orders for nearly 2,000 people.
The U.S. Geological Survey has reported nearly 20 active fissures. One that opened Saturday night was spattering, but no flow had formed.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported the fissures opened just east of the Puna Geothermal Venture energy conversion plant, where steam and hot liquid are brought up through underground wells and the steam feeds a turbine generator to produce electricity. Plant workers last week as a precaution removed 50,000 gallons (189,265 litres) of a flammable gas stored at the site.
Geologists warn that Kilauea's summit could have an explosive steam eruption that would hurl huge rocks and ash miles into the sky.
