It was founded in 1953 and is one of the 100 national tourist attractions of Bulgaria. The exhibitions are presented in separate halls and collections, organized according to the historical stages of the region, namely prehistory, the Roman and Byzantine period, the Middle Ages, the Thracian treasure hall, iconography, the Bulgarian Revolution. There is a new hall dedicated to Kozloduy nuclear power plant.

It was created between 1972 and 1987, it is part of Vratsa Regional History Museum and it contains collections of high value in terms of Bulgarian folk traditions, such as tools of the peasants, household and ceramics objects, folk costumes, carpets and other wovens, musical instruments. There is also an exhibition of carriage in an adjoining building.

The country is mostly mounty, but it also has many beaches at the Black Sea, so it is a good destination for all seasons. The major cities are Sofia (capital), Burgas, Provdiv, Rousse, Varna and VelikoTarnovo and can provide you with many points of interest around the country are the National Museum of History, the Boyana Church, the Kaliakra rocks, Pilska (the first Bulgarian capital), the Seven Altars Monastery, the Snezhanka cave and the Belogradchic Fortress.

Bulgaria HiLites: The Ulpia Eskus Archeological Reserve
The Ulpia Eskus Archeological Reserve from the 3rd-4th c. is on the municipal territory very close to the village of Gigen. In archeological terms the town has been researched since the beginning of the last century and the excavation, preservation and restoration work continues until nowadays. The municipality is planning to build a museum and an archeological center in order to make best use of its setting and reserves for the development of cultural, hunting, fishing and rural tourism.
After excavations in the village of Gigen the archeologists discovered not only an early-fortress wall of an ancient town, dating from II century AC, but also a lot of findings and information for the lifestyle of the population, that inhabited that region. One of the most remarkable things discovered in the town of Ulpiya Eskus is the mosaic Aheitsi. In the Regional history museum monuments, findings from the Roman town Ulpiya Eskus and the early Byzantine fortress of Storgozia are exposed: architecture details, colored floor mosaics, sculptures of Greek -- Roman pantheon divinities, golden ornaments.

Bulgaria HiLites: Medieval Town of Cherven
The remains of the medieval town of Cherven are an archaeological site of great importance to the research of Bulgarian culture of the Middle Ages. The first excavations were carried out in 1910--1911, while regular research on the site began in 1961. Currently, archaeological work is being conducted by the Rousse Regional Museum of History.
A large feudal palace, fortified walls reaching up to 3 m in width, two well-preserved underground water supply passages, 13 churches, administrative and residential buildings, workshops and streets have been excavated. The 12 m-high three-storey keep from the 14th century has also been fully preserved and was even used as a model for the reconstruction of Baldwin's Tower in Tsarevets, Veliko Tarnovo, in 1930. The site has been a national archaeological reserve since 1965 and is also a popular tourist attraction.

A town with very rich history, Veliko Turnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and has long traditions in the culture of Bulgaria. The city is rich in museums and historical sites, combined with vivacious night life propelled by the students in one of the largest universities in Bulgaria.
If in Veliko Turnovo, make sure to visit the castle of the old Bulgarian capital - Tsarevets. The city is divided into an old and new parts. The old city itself is a collection of traditional renaissance houses scattered over the hills around the river Yantra and the new part consists of a mixture of communistic and modern style buildings. There are various historical museums, located in Old Town, and an art museum on an island in the river.
Veliko Tarnovo is a city in north central Bulgaria and the administrative centre of Veliko Tarnovo Province. Often referred to as the City of the Tsars, Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famous as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture. Until 1965 the name of the town was Tarnovo, and this is still the common name. The old city is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora raising amidst the meanders of the Yantra. Tsarevets housed the palaces of the Bulgarian Emperors and the Patriarchate with the Patriarchal Cathedral, as well as a number of administrative and residential edifices surrounded by thick walls. Trapezitsa was known for its many churches and as the main residence of the nobility. In the Middle Ages it was among the main European centres of culture and gave its name to the architecture of the Tarnovo Artistic School, painting of the Tarnovo Artistic School and literature.
Veliko Tarnovo is an important administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre of Northern Bulgaria.

Bulgaria HiLites: Nove, A Roman Legion Town
The ancient Roman town of Nove is 4 km away from the town of Svishtov, and originated as headquarters of a Roman legion. Soon the territory around that military camp developed into a town settlement, which became a significant economic center.
Rogozen and Valchitran Thracian treasures
The discovery in Rogozen is one of the most significant antique treasures, found in South-eastern Europe. It consists of 165 vessels, made of high grade silver and weighs a total of 20 kg. The vessels can be divided in three groups: 108 vials, 54 jugs and 3 glasses. The first part of the treasure was discovered accidentally. In the autumn of 1985 Ivan Dimitrov from the village of Rogozen, Bulgaria, while digging to place pipes in his estate, found 65 silver vessels, buried shallowly. Moved by patriotic feelings, he notified the mayor who called the archaeologists from the Historical Museum in Vratsa. Senior science associate Dr. Bogdan Nikolov, Spas Mashov and Plamen Ivanov arrived in the village and they had the lucky opportunity to become the discoverers of one of the biggest antique treasures in Europe. On 6 January 1986 the three archaeologists found the second part of the treasure, consisting of a hundred vessels, all gathered together.
The Valchitran treasure was found on a December day in 1924 during the deep-ploughing of a vineyard, belonging to the two brothers Tsvetanov's from the village of Valchitran, in the district of Pleven, Bulgaria. It consists of 13 vessels, made of the following alloy: gold - 88.15%, silver - 9.7%, copper -1.74% and iron - 0.4%. The total weight of the treasure is 12,425 kg.
