EARTH'S LARGEST CRATER - VREDEFORT DOME HIKING | Parys, South Africa
The Vredefort Dome (Crater) is currently the largest and one of the oldest known meteor impact sites in the world. It is South Africa's seventh World Heritage Site and this is largely due to the research scientist from Wits University, including Dr. Rodger Hart. One hundred kilometers south west of Johannesburg, South Africa are the towns of Vredefort and Parys, the latter lying next to the Vaal river.The towns are a short deviation from the N1 highway to Cape Town. In an arc to the north and west of the towns is a partial ring of hills, some 70 kilometers in diameter. The hills are centered on Vredefort. The ring of hills and the area within them is known as the Vredefort Dome.his is the biggest meteorite impact that geologists have yet found on Earth and it is nearly twice as big as the impact that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. This makes it a site of great importance for scientists.The Vredefort Dome is a beautiful tourism place situated approximately 100 km from Johannesburg.

Vredefort Dome is a South African World Heritage Site
The World Heritage site of the Vredefort dome outside Potchefstroom in the North West was declared the World Heritage in July 2005. It boast unique geology which attracts scientists and geologists from all over the world. In the mountainous area of the dome lie some rocks which can be found only here and nowhere else in the world. Sisi Segalo reports.

In this documentary, Roger Gibson, one of South Africa's most renowned geologists, takes us on a fascinating journey through The Dome, as the crater is known. He explains how it took scientists over a century to recognize the clues of the area's impact origin - clues that are today still locked up in the rocks.

Vredefort Dome, approximately 120 km south-west of Johannesburg, is a representative part of a larger meteorite impact structure, or astrobleme. Dating back 2,023 million years, it is the oldest astrobleme yet found on Earth. With a radius of 190 km, it is also the largest and the most deeply eroded. Vredefort Dome bears witness to the world’s greatest known single energy release event, which had devastating global effects including, according to some scientists, major evolutionary changes. It provides critical evidence of the Earth’s geological history and is crucial to understanding of the evolution of the planet. Despite the importance of impact sites to the planet’s history, geological activity on the Earth’s surface has led to the disappearance of evidence from most of them, and Vredefort is the only example to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor.

Few South Africans realise that the Vaal River - the lifeblood of the country's industrial heartland - is unique in being the only major river that flows through an asteroid impact crater: and it is the largest such crater at that. The Vaal is also one of the oldest rivers on earth. The Vredefort Dome is the biggest and oldest astrobleme or star scar on our planet. Certainly the ancestral rivers that flowed here make the Witwatersrand basin the oldest of all. Malcolm and Peta Anne Basford decided to do a Dome Tour followed by rafting on the Vaal and had a thoroughly interesting and exciting time.
