Vulcan Park Birmingham, AL Snow Storm February 15, 2010 (1-6)

Snow Storm hits Birmingham, AL February 15, 2010. I happen to be near Vulcan Park and decide to document the storm atop Red Mountain. The wind is blowing constantly from the north. The snow is falling parallel to the ground. It is blowing so hard no snow can't accumulate on Vulcan or his pedestal tower. The snow just bounces off the lens of my Leica D-Lux 3 camera.

Creek Kids
Hands-on environmental learning is now available through Creek Kids, a partnership of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division andTannehill Ironworks Historical State Park. The Creek Kids Program teaches students in grades four to eight about aquatic environments.
Students experience an overview of a watershed via a train ride, see the impact of a mill dam on fish passage, and visit the Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama to learn about Alabama's iron industry. Students will work with an EnviroScape, which is an interactive educational model that illustrates how pollution can move into the aquatic environment. Students also wade into a bubbling spring and creek for a hands-on experience with native fish and invertebrates.
Many species of fish and aquatic invertebrates, including some types of crayfish, mussels, and snails, live only in Alabama. Students attending Creek Kids have a good chance of observing an Alabama darter, a small fish only found in certain Alabama streams. Unless Alabama's citizens better understand our unique aquatic environment, some of these species may become extinct.
The Creek Kids program costs $5 per student. Some schools may have their fees waved if they are public schools with 40 percent or more of their students eligible for free or reduced lunches. Assistance may include some transportation costs. Funding of this effort comes from the sale of Take A Kid Fishing car tags. To make Creek Kids reservations call 205-477-6301, or email Maurice Jackson at maurice.jackson@dcnr.alabama.gov.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, tannehill.org, is part of the Alabama Historic Ironworks Commission, alaironworks.com. The park is open to a wide variety of activities including hiking and camping. The Steel and Iron Museum of Alabama is housed in the park. Tannehill is well known for its trade days, which are held on the third Saturday and following Sunday of each month, March through November.

AGM-28 Hound Dog
The North American Aviation AGM-28 Hound Dog was a supersonic, turbojet-propelled, air-launched cruise missile developed in 1959 for the United States Air Force. It was primarily designed to be capable of attacking Soviet ground-based air defense sites prior to a potential air attack by B-52 Stratofortress long range bombers during the Cold War. The Hound Dog was first given the designation B-77, then redesignated GAM-77, and finally as AGM-28. It was conceived as a temporary standoff missile for the B-52, to be used until the GAM-87 Skybolt air-launched ballistic missile was available. Instead, the Skybolt was cancelled within a few years and the Hound Dog continued to be deployed for a total of 15 years until its replacement by newer missiles, including the AGM-69 SRAM and the AGM-86 ALCM.

The city, with a downtown elevation of approximately 680 feet (210 m), lies at the transition between the ridge-and-valley portion of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau. Surrounded by mountains and ridges, the official nickname for Chattanooga is Scenic City, reinforced by the city's reputation for outdoor activities. Unofficial nicknames include River City, Chatt, Nooga, Chattown, and Gig City, referencing Chattanooga's claims that it has the fastest internet service in the Western Hemisphere.Chattanooga is internationally known for the 1941 song Chattanooga Choo Choo by Glenn Miller and his orchestra. SUMMARY
=======
Demopolis is the largest city in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,483 at the time of the 2010 United States Census.The city lies at the confluence of the Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers. It is situated atop a cliff composed of the Demopolis Chalk Formation, known locally as White Bluff, on the east bank of the Tombigbee River. It is at the center of Alabama's Canebrake region and is also within the Black Belt.Demopolis was founded after the fall of Napoleon's Empire and named by a group of French expatriates, a mix of exiled Bonapartists and other French migrants who had settled in the United States after the overthrow of the colonial government in Saint-Domingue following the failed Saint-Domingue expedition. The name, meaning in Greek the People's City or City of the People, was chosen to honor the democratic ideals behind the endeavor. First settled in 1817, it is one of the oldest continuous settlements in Alabama. It was incorporated on December 11, 1821..
