SUMMARY
=======
Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1997, is a recent addition to the United States National Wildlife Refuge system. It is located in parts of northeastern Georgetown County, South Carolina, southern Horry, and southeastern Marion counties, and contains lands adjacent to the Pee Dee River, the Little Pee Dee River, and the Waccamaw River near their confluence. Currently the size of the refuge is 22,931 acres (92.80 km2) but plans call for the total refuge to be over 50,000 acres (200 km2).
It was founded to preserve valuable undeveloped coastal wetland and adjacent uplands that provide habitats for many species of wildlife. One endangered species that is given a home, primarily on longleaf pine forest on Sandy Island is the red-cockaded woodpecker. It is also a nesting area for swallow-tailed kites and bald eagles.
The stated objectives of this refuge are:
Provide habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, raptors, neo-tropical migratory birds, and resident species.
Environmental education and interpretation.
Provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation.The Refuge visitor's center is located just north of Georgetown on Highway 701 overlooking the Great Pee Dee River in the small community of Yauhannah, SC.

Adopt-A-Landing Super Heroes
The Waccamaw River flows through Columbus and Brunswick Counties in North Carolina and Horry and Georgetown Counties in South Carolina affording its citizens with myriad benefits, not the least of which is the recreational opportunities on this beautiful, black water river. Both States’ Constitutions affirm public ownership of our rivers and their availability for recreational use by the public. Under the Public Trust Doctrine, these water resources are held in trust for the benefit of all the people. The public has a right to fully enjoy these resources for a wide variety of public uses including recreation.
There are many public boat landings that provide public access to the Waccamaw River. Most are managed by the County or by DOT. For those of us who utilize those public access ways, we want to partner to ensure that they remain clean and usable by all of our citizens.
Previously, South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources promoted an Adopt-a-Landing Program designed to cleanup and promote stewardship of the boat ramps along the state’s rivers and lakes. This program was also intended to educate the public on the harmful effects that litter has on the environment. Unfortunately, budget cuts resulted in the program being discontinued. In North Carolina, most public boat ramps are managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (Adopt-a-Boat Ramp Program) or by the County.
It is our wish that, with the help of local citizens who utilize the river and/or value the public access these landings provide, the RIVERKEEPER® Adopt-a-Landing Program will keep these accesses and our river clean and safe. To that end, we invite local citizen groups, businesses, church groups, youth groups, school groups, etc. to “adopt” their local landing. Here's a list of current adopters but we welcome others to partner with us:

What would be expected of you? To begin with, we ask you to agree on a schedule for regular cleanups at your adopted landing. We also ask you to help identify needs for your adopted landing. Is litter a problem? Is access a problem? How could the landing be improved to provide for not only boaters but others who may wish to enjoy the river? We invite you to Adopt-a-Landing and become members of the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® Program.
What will you get in return? You will have a feeling of satisfaction that you are helping to keep your local landing clean and safe for use. You’ll get special recognition of your contributions, including recognition in RiverSpeak, the official newsletter of the Waccamaw RIVERKEEPER® Program, and on our website at winyahrivers.org. An official sign will be placed at the landing site naming your group as the landing’s adopter. In the future, there may be opportunities for special awards recognizing your contributions in maintaining your adopted landing and keeping the Waccamaw River clean and healthy.

Waccamaw Riversweep 2018: Cox Ferry Cleanup
The last week of organized clean ups of the Waccamaw River was held at the beautiful Cox Ferry Lake Recreation Area & Wildlife Refuge. 25 volunteers manned boats & kayaks, pulling debris out of the river. Many have never paddled this part of the river so it was a special treat to lead a group up into Pitch Lodge Lake, a singularly beautiful & less traveled part of the river. Still, we pulled out close to 50 pounds of trash, bottles & debris. #WinyahRiversFoundation #WaccamawRiver

700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.
I really enjoyed learning about this amazing snake, if you guys have any cool wildlife stories or interesting animals that you think I might enjoy, tell me about it on Facebook

SUMMARY
=======
The East Coast Greenway is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) biking and walking route linking the major cities of the Atlantic coast of the United States, from Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida. The spine route and branching complementary routes are for non-motorized human transportation for everything from local commutes to long-distance trips.
The nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance was created in 1991. The entire route has been selected. As of July 2017, 900 miles (1,450 km), or 32 percent of the route, is off-road on traffic-protected greenways. The vision is for the entire trail to be off-road.
