ThruJimsEyes - Hawaii: Driving the high road from Kona to Waimea
This is our favorite drive on the Island of Hawai'i. Mamalahoa Highway (The Path Of The Splintered Paddle) has great historic significance in Hawaiian history. The drive from Kona to Waimea is breathtaking with it's transition from the lush hills of Kona to the wide open spaces covered in lava rock and grasses to the cool, often wet, region of Waimea (Kamuela). When you drive this road remember to ask Akua (God) to share the wonders and the beauty of the island and you shall not be disappointed.

Hawaii Cultural Native Footsteps Walk at Waimea Valley on Oahu
- Waimea Valley was carved by rain and wind from the flank of the Ko'olau Mountain range some two million years ago. Some of the plants and animals that had crossed the vast ocean barrier to reach the older Hawaiian Islands made the relatively short inter-island jump to colonize this lush new land. Over eons, fresh colonizers arrived, while brand new species gradually evolved. With its range of habitats stretching from the dry, salty sea shore to the cool, misty uplands, Waimea Valley became home to a vast array of ferns, flowering plants, invertebrates, birds, stream life, and Hawaii's only land mammal, the hoary bat.
While competition from non-native plants, animals and disease have taken their toll on wildlife in Waimea Valley, it is still one of the best places on O'ahu to look for native species. In addition to the many native plants growing in the gardens and grounds, a number of native Hawaiian animals make their homes here. Four of the five species of 'o'opu our only native freshwater fish, thrive in Kamananui Stream, along with several species of mollusk. Native damselflies, dragonflies, fruit flies, and other invertebrates also abound. Various species of migratory birds (including plovers and turnstones) winter in Waimea. Perhaps the native bird easiest to spot is the endangered 'alae'ula a black water bird with a red shield that has established populations in our ponds. Many introduced animals live in Waimea as well. These include peacocks, and other birds, as well as the ubiquitous Indian mongoose.
A Historic Valley
Evidence suggests that the Hawaiian Islands were first settled by Polynesians, probably from Tahiti and the Marquesas, about 2,000 years ago. Windward coastal sites like Waimea Valley, with fertile valley floors, ample fresh water, and good offshore fishing were among the earliest places inhabited. During the 12th century A.D., a great spiritual leader named Pa'ao arrived in Hawai'i He introduced the use of stone terraces and walls for heiau, or temples, and also installed a priesthood that endured for centuries. It is believed that the Hale O Lono Heiau near the entrance to Waimea Valley, along with the two other heiau flanking the cliffs above the valley, bear witness to the religious changes brought by Pa'ao. In fact, Waimea Valley and the adjacent ridge of Pupukea remained important centers of religion and spirituality until 1819, presided over through the centuries by kāhuna nui who were direct descendants of Pa'ao. Early Hawaiians developed a very sophisticated agricultural system, which included a series of terraces and irrigation ditches. Here they grew taro, sweet potato, bananas and other crops, and raised pigs, chickens and dogs. Much of the fertile valley floor was cleared for cultivation. New crops, especially fruit trees, were added after their introduction by Westerners. Archaeological clues to the past abound in Waimea Valley. In addition to the heiau, there are several fishing shrines, many walls from agricultural terraces and living sites, and remnant vegetation typical of Hawaiian settlements. Please be respectful when visiting these sites.

Waimea falls, Waimea Valley Adventure, Beautiful Hawaii
Our adventure in the beautiful Waimea valley and Waimea falls!!
Waimea Valley, Oahu
Waimea Valley is a beautiful 1,800-acre visitor attraction that is also a sanctuary for rare birds and plants endemic to Hawaii. A trip to this park is a combination of learning about Hawaiian history and culture and appreciation of nature.
Within the park there are 78 reconstructed archaeological sites that show the life of earlier inhabitants of the area. These include religious sites and shrines, sites of former houses and agricultural and fishing areas. Some of the sites have been excavated and restored with storyboard displays explaining their significance. Continuing with the cultural theme, several activities are being offered, including lei making, kapa demonstrations, history walks, hula lessons and Hawaiian games, as well as crafts, music and storytelling with kupuna.
For those more interested in the beauty of nature than the history of man, the park is home to a spectacular botanical collection. This 150-acre site contains more than 5,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants, including native and endangered Hawaiian plants. Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour through the garden.
Educational brochures and plaques provide information along these easy, paved trails. Throughout the park visitors also get the chance to see native and endangered bird species, including the 'alae'ula. Four of the five species of the native 'o'opu freshwater fish can also be spotted in Kamananui Stream.
Perhaps the biggest attraction in Waimea Valley, and focal point of the park, is the 45-foot (13.7 m) Waimea Falls. Visitors can refresh themselves in the cool waters of the pool.

What it’s REALLY like living in Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii (Funny but True)
Aloha everyone! In this video we put together a list of things you can’t” do in Hawaii. We have been living in Hawaii for almost three years now and have discovered some things that are not so obvious that you cannot do in Hawaii. The list is meant to be funny and comes from our own personal experience living on big island in the Puna district. So don't take it too seriously =). There is, however, some truth to all of the things that made the list. Hope you enjoy!! Don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE! - Mahalo
