Welcome to Obama City ★ ONLY in JAPAN
This place is for real! A city in Japan called Obama. They must have named it after the former president, right?
Well ...
Republicans can sigh a breath of relief as this Obama was here first. Obama City, Japan's history goes back centuries and the coincidence of phonetically having the same name as Barack Obama's last name is what makes the city stand out internationally. Oh, in case you're wondering, in Japanese, Obama actually means Small Beach.
Like any town with such a unique coincidence, the city embraced it and made a strong bond with the Senator then President.
It started when Senator Obama landed in Japan and the immigration officer told him he was from Obama!
But take a step back from the last 10 years and you'll find another kind of city.
Obama City is located in Fukui Prefecture, about 70km from Kyoto on the Sea of Japan. It was the Gateway to Japan for centuries before the Edo period because it was the closest link to Kyoto from the Sea. The route used was called MACKEREL ROAD because SABA (Mackerel) was the most traded fish, delivered to Kyoto endlessly along with loads of other goods to and from the imperial city.
▶︎ WHERE IS OBAMA?
▶︎ WHAT CAN YOU DO IN OBAMA?
Well, eat!
Obama Fish Market is friendly and has an amazing teishoku restaurant that opens early.
It's also famous for lacquerware (luxury chopsticks, boxes) and it's hundreds of temples and shrines in the mountains.
There are also boat tours cruising along the picturesque coast.
If you want to visit the President Barack Obama Library / Museum of sort, head to the lobby of the Hotel Sekumiya between JR Obama Station and the sea.
Political note: The Trump Obama debate is not something I cover in this episode nor Democrats vs Republicans. I have no personal opinion in this episode and actually tease the situation :)
If there were a Trump city, I'd cover that too but phonetically Obama O-BA-MA works well in Japanese and is also a last name in Japan.
Japan is looking forward to President Donald Trump's visit in November just like they would any strong ally and he'll have a warm welcome just like former President Obama did when he visited. I do recommend President Trump visit Obama City. The hotel I stayed in is no Trump Tower but it was good enough for the US Ambassador John Roos.

Wakasa Lacquerware has a 400 Year History and is Known for its High Quality Throughout Japan.
Wakasa Lacquerware has a 400 Year History and is Known for its High Quality Throughout Japan.
The most famous being the Wakasa-nuri hashi (lacquered chopsticks) of the city of Obama, Fukui Prefecture. Production here accounts for over 90% of lacquered chopsticks in Japan. Craftspeople here produce a variety of chopsticks with modern designs, in addition to the highest quality chopsticks in which shells and gold/silver leaf are repeatedly coated with lacquer to highlight their beautiful patterns. Chopsticks are a local specialty of Obama, and there are shops specializing in chopsticks There is also a Chopsticks Festival every August in which a special Buddhist service is held for chopsticks.
-------------
Wakasa lacquerware (called Wakasa-nuri in Japanese) is produced in the area around the city of Obama, Fukui prefecture. It is said to have originated in the early Edo period (1603-1868) when a craftsman serving the Obama domain (now the city of Obama), which controlled the region near Wakasa Bay, created a design depicting the beautiful depths of the sea. Wakasa Bay is a picturesque area because as a ria coast made up of numerous small bays. A few of these locations are Amanohashidate, one of the Three Most Scenic Spots of Japan, and Kehi no Matsubara, one of the Three Most Scenic Pine Groves of Japan.
The defining elements of Wakasa lacquerware are the creation of patterns with eggshells, seashells, and pine needles and the use of the togidashi maki-e, a technique which is elevation of the pattern through applying multiple layers of lacquer. These features give this craft a unique and composed appearance. It is also prized artistically, unlike various other types of lacquerware that are more appreciated for functionality only.
Wakasa lacquerware is popular for daily use due to its durability against heat and water, with the chopsticks accounting for more than eighty percent of the lacquer chopsticks produced domestically. Another appealing aspect is that the entire production process is completed by a single craftsman, giving individuality for each piece.
=================
History
Wakasa lacquerware is said to have started around the years 1596 to 1615, when Sanjuro MATSUURA, a lacquer craftsman working for the Obama domain, designed and produced a lacquerware pattern based on the seabed of Wakasa Bay, using Chinese lacquerware as a reference. The improved version of this original prototype was called Kikuji lacquerware, from which Matsuura's disciples invented the isokusa lacquerware technique. The techniques that are being passed down to this day were perfected between 1658 and 1660. The lord of the Obama domain then named the craft, Wakasa lacquerware, and actively promoted production as a side job among lower class samurai, ashigaru.
Due to the support from a successive generation of lords, the production of this craft grew to a core industry that supported the economy of the domain. Numerous outstanding craftsmen emerged, leading to various new beautiful designs. The middle to late Edo period (1603-1868) is said to have been the golden age of Wakasa lacquerware, though it remained popular as a local specialty of the region even after the Meiji period (1868-1912). Today, craftsmen are researching ways to create new designs that will suit modern trends.

Following in the footsteps of Tomiko Yamakawa [PR for Fukui]
This time, we will introduce Tomiko Yamakawa, who was a poet from Obama City during the Meiji Period. She had an arranged marriage that her parents decided at the age of 22 but lost her husband next year. Afterwards, she entered the English Literature Department of Japan Women’s University and published the collaborated anthology of poems “Koigoromo” with Akiko Yosano and Masako Masuda. However, she suffered tuberculosis and died at the age of 29 in 1909.

A morning drive in Fukui, Japan
Here's a nice part of my morning drive from 鯖江市 (Sabae-shi) to 織田町 (Ota-cho) in 福井県 (Fukui-ken). I teach at a couple of elementary schools out there, and absolutely love the drive to and from.
Filmed in November, 2011.
Sorry about the unsteady camera, it was filmed from my iPhone while holding the steering wheel at the same time. I am not a pro.
