Many visitors to Japan make it a point to see Kyoto and Tokyo. But just next door to Osaka, not far from Kyoto and an hour from Tokyo by plane, lies a spiritual place filled with nature and tradition: Wakayama Prefecture.
This region, filled with history and commonly known as the spiritual heartland of Japan, is gaining world attention as a must-see destination. It was awarded Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2018, and this year it is part of the Airbnb 19 Destinations to Visit in 2019.

About JAPAN Forward:
JAPAN Forward is a new English-language news and opinion website run by the JAPAN Forward association Inc.
JAPAN Forward aims to present the true face of Japan, as seen from a wide variety of perspectives, to a rapidly-changing world where unpredictability often outpaces stability. Japan has long lagged behind other countries—all of which have their own points of view—in conveying her own take on the world around.
JAPAN Forward sets out to overcome misunderstandings born of linguistic barriers. In covering major news stories in Japan, along with key points of debate, current events, history, culture, and the arts, we hope to deepen the world’s understanding of the Japanese archipelago.
With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, there is a great need for a new English-language medium rooted in solid fact and fully cognizant of the history and culture of Japan and the Japanese people. Our expanding network of influential analysts and foreign experts based in Japan and overseas means that we are continuously improving our ability to bring the truth about Japan to an ever-wider English-speaking audience.
At the helm of JAPAN Forward is an editor who has decades of journalism experience in Europe and the United States, while our editorial team of native speakers hails from policy research centers, academia, journalism outlets, and more. This is the real Japan, in real English.
JAPAN Forward is operated by JAPAN Forward Association Inc., which has also established the JAPAN Forward Supporters Network to allow individual and corporate sponsors to join in our mission to keep Japan moving forward and build our recognition in the Anglosphere.

Wakayama Prefecture is located to the south of Osaka. The capital of the prefecture is Wakayama City.
Wakayama Prefecture has many places for visitors to enjoy and explore. The best known tourist attraction is Mount Koya (Koyasan), the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. Visitors who wish to experience an overnight stay at a temple can experience one here.
In addition to the overnight stay at the temple, visitors approach Koyasan to explore the Kumano Kodo, an ancient network of trials used by pilgrims to visit temples. The Kumano Sanzan, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha and the Kumano Nachi Taisha are also well visited in this area.

JAPAN TRIP 2017 Day7 : Wakayama City
Wakayama, Japan: Day 1
You've probably never heard of Wakayama Prefecture in Japan. However, it's one of the bigger prefectures on Honshu, the main island. Wakayama is known for its many traditional castles, temples, shrines and onsen (hot springs). The coastal cities' beaches are a huge tourist attraction, and Wakayama City boasts a prestigious university and home to many company jobs.
My grandfather was born and raised in Susami, Wakayama. In 1961, when he was only 19 years old, he left Japan for the U.S. He came to Los Angeles, started a family and never looked back. He did not keep in contact with his brothers he left behind, and the only time he returned was in 1990, nearly 30 years later, when his mother became ill.
I never knew my family from Wakayama. I don't know who or where they are.I always felt like that part of my heritage was missing. So when I was offered a trip by the Wakayama International Exchange Association (WIXAS), I immediately accepted. I hope to not only learn more about my Japanese heritage, but also the life my grandfather left behind more than 50 years ago.
