The banana arithmetic for Ganapathy shrine in Thanjavur Brihadeeswara
Carved out in stone, the inscriptions of Thanjavur Brihadeeshwara reveal a King’s passion. Archeologists and heritage enthusiasts describe this temple as one of a kind, wherein the King Raja Raja Chola has left behind a large number of inscriptions with details on the temple's construction, temple rituals, most intricate details of the donations and so on. In our visit to the Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple with CTC (Chennai Trekking Club) and “Walkwithus” in March 2017, we got a chance to get a better idea of some of the inscriptions. For the benefit of those who don’t understand Tamil, here a brief of what has been conveyed in the video/inscription in the front wall of the Ganapathy shrine in Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple. As per the order of the king Raja Raja Chola, 150 bananas has to be served everyday to the Vinayagar shrine in Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple for the preparation of அமுது (nectar). Hence, for one year*, 150*360 = 54,000 bananas would be required for the Ganapathy shrine (*Cholas followed lunar calendar and during that era, one year had 360 days – 30 days in 12 months). The inscription details that 1200 bananas could be purchased with one kasu (coin) during the rule of Raja Raja Chola. Hence, 45 kasu (coins) are needed to maintain supply of bananas for a year. Instead of directly providing the 45 kasu every year, the king deposited a total of 360 coins from treasury among four merchants/traders with one-eight kasu per year (i.e 12.5% annual interest). Hence, the interest of 45 coins earned each year from the four merchants was utilized to supply bananas to the shrine every year as per the inscription. The inscription in front walls of the Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple also mentions the details of the four traders to whom the 360 coins were deposited to arrange funds for the bananas.
Considering the fact that the rule of King Raja Raja Chola went on for 29 years, this inscription is a testimony to the fact that the price of bananas possibly remained constant under the rule of King Raja Raja Chola. This inscription is a legacy of the administrative talent of the Chola king. While we battle heavy inflation in the 21st century, with vegetable and fruit prices doubling or tripling in a matter of months, we have a lot to learn from our ancestors when it comes to administration. Next time you visit the Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple, do try to give a look at the inscriptions of Raja Raja Chola, his effort to pass on the most minute details of his administration and many other things to the future generations.

7th graduation day @ 14.12.2019 Chief Guest Speech
7th Graduation Day...
Enjoy your profession, serve society with
conscience—Nursing graduates told
VILLUPURAM, Dec 16
Nurses are important part of the healthcare system. As the android phones are programmed to perform certain functions, nurses are programmed to render service to the society.
In discharging their duty, nurses should follow their conscience, according to Dr Jayaseelan M.Devadasan, President, Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Tamil Nadu State branch, and Dean, Annai JKK Sampoorani Ammal College of Nursing, Komarapalayam.
Dr Devadasan was delivering the 7th Graduation Day address of E.S.College of Nursing at Villupuram on December 14, 2019. He said that the Founder Chairman of E.S.College of Nursing
Mr E.Swamikannu had a worldly view. His educational institutions were providing higher education to students belonging to various strata of society.’
Dr Devadasan quoted Mr Swamikannu as having said that one of the students who happened to be the daughter of a fish vendor, was now gainfully employed drawing a monthly salary of Rs 85,000. It was a thing to be proud of.
He said, “I am delighted to be associated with the dynamic College Secreatry Mr S.Senthil Kumar.” To be successful involved so many things. “When you look back you must be in a position to connect the dots. What you considered as the worst thing that had happened in your life would turn out to be advantageous to your career.
Citing his own instance, Dr Devadasan said that he was born to the teacher parent couple. His elder brother was brilliant, he was just an average student. He was quite mischievous, as he copied in examinations, stole money from his father’s pockets and lifted certain things from his classmates.
He remained incorrigible till the age of 13 years. Later on, a sort of miracle had happened in his life. His conscience started pricking him and goaded him to find out what was good and what was bad.
A thought flashed in his mind that God had created him for a purpose.
After this realization he returned all the stolen things to the original owners and began getting good marks in history in which he invariably failed earlier.
Dr Devadasan further said that another miracle happened in his life that he got admission to the nursing college in Bengaluru. “God can do anything and everything. With his grace nothing is impossible,” he said.
“We need God to walk with us all the times. We should not beseech God only when the need arises. It is for every one of us to find the purpose of life and start working on it,” he stated.
A girl from an orphanage went to the US and arranged for a “live visa” for Dr Devadasan to go to the US. “Going abroad and earning money is not at all wrong. But that should not be your primary goal. You must do whatever you are prepared to do,” Dr Devadasan observed.
Once, certain alumni called on their professor who offered them a pot of coffee. He put a variety of cups for them to serve themselves coffee. Almost all of them chose the shiny cups.
The professor told them that what was important was the coffee and not the cup used for drinking the beverage. Whatever be the economic status of the family, the students must learn to enjoy life. Then only they could improve upon their status.
He gave another anecdote in his life. When he boarded the flight from Chennai to Hyderabad, the airhostess served tea to all the passengers. He asked for coffee which never came up till the flight landed. It taught him a lesson that one should first take whatever came in his way.
In the same manner, nurses should grab the first offering and should not wait till the appointment comes from the institution they desired. Dr Devadasan pointed out that E.S.College of Nursing had taught the students clinical skills and life skills in Advance Life Support (ALS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Electrocardiogram and so on.
Nurses should constantly sharpen their skills. Dr Devadasan underscored the point that it was a nurse who invented “phototherapy” in the treatment of jaundice in new born babies, ie., children who were placed closer to the windows were doing better than those placed in the middle of the room.
Similarly, through keen observation and constant questioning nurses could do wonder. To focus attention on the importance of nursing profession the World Health Organization had designated 2020 as the Year of Nurses.
Dr Devadasan noted that nurses should daily talk to three people: to their parents, to themselves and to God. He wished all the best to the nurses who passed out.
