India: The Ancient Synagogues of Kolkata/Calcutta
If someone doesn't take you or show you where they are, you'll never find the two remaining Synagogues of Kolkata/Calcutta, both protected monuments. Buried in an extremely busy area, you need permission to visit.
We visited Magen David (1883-84) first with permission from David Nahoum (a famous confectionary shop in the New Market). Magen David is larger and more ornate of the two synagogues before taking a 10-minute walk to Beth El (1856) with a matzo oven and mikvah (ceremonial bath). The majority of Kolkata/Calcutta Sephardic Jews immigrated from Iraq and there may only be 15 remaining Jews in this city (per Mr. Nahoum).

Walking in Calcutta in rush hour
Kolkata/Calcutta walk tour with Let's Meetup Tours in India
We believe Walking is the best way to see a place. If you drive, you watch the road. In a taxi, the city moves past too quickly. Riding a bicycle is even too fast and distracting. Walking is the only way to really examine the people, the shops, the art, and the trash. The only way to feel the texture of a city at ground level is with your feet.

Calcutta, India
We have made our way to Calcutta, the center of all that is chaotic and crazy in the world. Every second is pure insanity, my eyes can't keep up with the movement.
A wild mixture of modern and traditional, Calcutta is perhaps the greatest location in the world for people watching. At night, when the temperatures drop, Indians and tourists take to the streets.
Strolling the filthy, steamy city, one cannot help being drawn into the manic sense of euphoria when the city comes alive. Night markets, street vendors, flashing neon signs, and hand-drawn rickshaws racing with yellow Ambassador taxis. It's like performance art on the largest scale imaginable!
