Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
Video provided by I Love NY, Dept. of Economic Development.
In October 2009 the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park opened as a legacy project of the Hudson Fulton Champlain Quadricentennial. The park provides access to the Hudson River's breathtaking landscape for pedestrians, hikers, joggers, bicyclists, and people with disabilities. The bridge deck stands 212 feet above the river's surface and is 6,768 feet (1.28 miles) long, making it the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.
Did You Know?
The bridge is 212 feet above the Hudson River's surface.
The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in the late 19th century to link New York and New England to an extensive, nationwide railway network. For decades, it was a major rail corridor for both freight and passengers.
After a fire in 1974, the bridge was abandoned and sat for decades as an orphaned relic. This brand new park was made possible due to the unwavering commitment of the community, who, through a non-profit organization called Walkway Over the Hudson, forged a public private partnership involving the State of New York, the federal government, neighboring municipalities, private corporations and other not for profit groups. The amazing result of this wonderful partnership is a brand new state park, now open for all to enjoy.
New! Ride the glass evelator up to the park or down to the Poughkeepsie waterfront. Along the way, be treated to great views of the surrounding scenery and the structure of the bridge. The elevator is located at Upper Landing Park, a short walk from the Poughkeepsie Train Station. Call (845) 834-3641 to check the operating schedule of the elevator.

The Highlands Rediscovered in HD
THE HIGHLANDS REDISCOVERED (2004) looks at both the science and the history of New Jersey's portion of this heavily-forested region that sits inside the northeastern metropolitan area. Water quality and quantity are the key benefits of this undeveloped region to the densely-populated cities, and the forest habitat is what makes the water clean and plentiful. But can this region survive the leaps and bounds of modern development?
Walkway over the Hudson, Poughkeepsie, NY, United States
This video shows my walk over the Hudson.
Much longer then I thought, I think I got a bit tired half way through because I simply forgot to film anything (on my phone anyway). If you do the entire walk following the map (seen early in the clip), it takes quite a long time and is mostly not that interesting (assuming you are not simply out for a walk of course). To this traveller, with hindsight, I would have turned back on the bridge and walked back to the car park. The part of the walk from the Mid-Hudson bridge to the car park (ie the second half of the walk) is particular dull. I missed out on spending time at the FDR Memorial library because of the time spent here.
That's not to knock the actual Walkway which is amazing and well worth stopping to experience...just don't walk the entire loop.

Hudson State Historical Park: Walkway Poughkeepsie NY, May 25, 2012
First opened in 1889, the Poughkeepsie-Highland railroad bridge was the longest cantilever and truss span bridge in the world. Reborn in 2009, walkway over the Hudson State historical Park is the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.
Conceived in 1860, the Poughkeepsie-Highland railroad bridge created the only Hudson Crossing between New York City and Albany. Political and financial difficulties prevented the project from getting underway for several years. In 1886,
When the bridge opened, it was connected to an extensive, nationwide railroad network. The bridge provided a direct route from transporting raw material, such as coal from Pennsylvania and grain from the middle west, across the Hudson River to the Northeast, where most of the nation's manufacturing was concentrated. Trains also carried lumber, beef, produce, and passengers.
During World War II thousand of troops and supplies trains crossed the bridge sometimes at a rate of one per hour heading east to New England ports. Troops and supplies were then deployed overseas
Throughout the 20th century increase trucking, reduce manufacturing, and the development of the interstate highway system hurt American railroads. When a fire broke out on the Poughkeepsie side of the bridge on May 8, 1974, train traffic had already declined dramatically. The fire damaged the bridge, and by the 1980s it was abandoned and sold to a private owner

Walkway Over the Hudson—East to West
On a windy Wednesday afternoon, 24 August 2011, I rode the full length of the Walkway Over the Hudson, a New York State Historic Park built atop an abandoned railroad trestle which crosses the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie. I was holding the camera with my right hand and had my left on the handlebars of my mountain bike. The loud noise you hear on the video is the gusting winds, which were moving from south to north (left to right, from the perspective of the video camera). In the middle of the bridge, I had to stop the camera for a moment because my left hand needed a break. (The walkway is located just north of the Mid-Hudson Bridge, NY 55 & US 44.)
