Wallace, Idaho
Wallace is located in the heart of Idaho's silver mining region, and the area has produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. The area saw a lot of contention between miners and the mine owners - the Army had to come in a couple times to settle things down.
I-90 was built through Wallace on a raised viaduct. The original proposal called for a surface level highway, but that would have destroyed much of the city. Local leaders were able to get downtown Wallace designated as the Wallace Historic District, which spared the historic heart of the city. Minig is still done in the area, but Wallace now draws tourists for the city itself and for access to nearby mountains, trails and lakes.

The Sierra Silver Mine in Wallace Idaho, the center of the universe! About an hour East of Coeur d’Alene, Wallace Idaho claimed themselves as the center of the universe in 2004. So you can imagine the vibe of this town. It’s a bunch of fun, and a bunch of people that don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s also a town with a ton of history. Founded 135 years ago in 1884, Wallace rests in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, a district that produced more silver than any other district in the United States. The history of mining culture in Wallace is what makes the Sierra Silver Mine tour such a fun and unique experience. The Sierra Silver Mine tour is the second most popular tour in Idaho. Go underground in a real mine, with a real miner as your guide, and get a feel for what it was like to live as a miner during the Idaho silver boom. If you don’t have the hour and a half it takes to hop on the trolly and take the tour, you can stop by their historic office in Downtown Wallace. Equipped with its own ice cream parlor.
The mine is chilly so bring a jacket. Open 7 days a week from May 1st through October 15th. Check the website for more details like hours of operation. It’s best to call ahead of time to reserve your spot on a tour, but they do allow walk-ins.

There is a free outdoor exhibit of various mining equipment and machinery used in the Silver Valley from the mid- 1880's up through modern times. In this video we look at some of these items, and what they did.
The visitor center also houses the Wallace Chamber of Commerce ans is a nice rest area for those traveling along Interstate 90.

While looking for a place to write, I found Wallace, Idaho. This historic mining town maintains it's connections to it's beginning by the people who live there and keep it alive today. This video is a collection of photos I have taken during my stay in Wallace. I hope this leads others to seek out adventure in this world of lush pine, old brick and a peaceful place to just be. Wallace sits ready for fresh ideas and new beginnings.

Here's Part 1 of the early edition of The Sunday News on WBBM Channel 2, anchored by Bob Wallace (a fixture of the station from May 1970 to September 1991). Also featuring Michele Clark (who sadly perished in the December 8th 1972 crash of United Airlines Flight 553 at Chicago's Midway Airport) and Harry Porterfield. (All lower-thirds and other super text in this period are set in Univers No. 55, and the microphone on Mr. Wallace's desk is an RCA BK-5 type.) Includes:

- Operation Breadbasket director Jesse Jackson extending his leave of absence to form a third political party and fielding black candidates for president and vice president for next year's Democratic Convention, as quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times; Michele Clark gives more details of Jackson's plans, with film footage of Jackson speaking on February 25th 1971.
- A report by Harry Porterfield on the race for mayor between incumbent Richard J. Daley and Republican challenger Richard Friedman; Friedman hosted a gathering for supporters at his near North Side home, while Daley spoke with more than 400 supporters at the 42nd Ward Democratic Headquarters at 945 North State Street (George W. Dunne, Ward Committeeman), all accompanied by pertinent footage.
- Attorney General John N. Mitchell announces crime in the U.S. has increased 11% in 1970, but that was the lowest rate increase since 1966; Chicago was among the 10 largest cities, with an overall crime rate reduction, but murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and auto theft all went up.

The Music at the beginning sounds like Batman is going to be in this. Sorry he's not in this one.
The Largest Forest Fire in U.S. History burned its way into the South and East sides of Wallace Idaho on August 20th - 21st, 1910. For 36 hours this fire burned an area as large as the State of Connecticut. A 29 year old by the name of Arthur Fay, with his wife Mabel, and two small children, Adelaide and Clark, witnessed the events of that summer.
In the late 1950's, at the age of 73, Arthur recounted those events the best he could. Although he, his wife, and children escaped, he never returned to Wallace. This is his account of that hot, dry, summer (much like the one we have today in 2015).
This presentation of HWPS and Auggie Dog Productions is to remember the event and honor all those families and fire fighters who lost their lives and the men, women, and children who had their lives changed. This one fire forever shaped how forest fires are fought.
Although this is an abridged account, and sound and voice manipulation was used to drive the narrative and make this more entertaining, we have been careful to keep the original intent and feeling of his thoughts (the best we could).
