Day trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a Epic Fail in the Mountains
I go on a day trip to explore Santa Fe, New Mexico by foot. We visit the historic plaza, the Loretto Chapel and it's miraculous staircase, the St. Francis Cathedral, Artsy Canyon Road, and the oldest house in the United States. Then I get lost in the mountains looking for the Tent Rocks, and the road was closed.
We tow a 2015 Winnebago Micro Minnie 1706FB travel trailer. You are more than welcome to tag along in our travels by subscribing to this channel.

Villanueva State Park - New Mexico State Park
Villanueva State Park - New Mexico State Park
Villanueva State Park was the Two Tired Teachers final New Mexico State Park. Located between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, it seemed the perfect park to go to either or both cities.
The campsites are well shaded on the level where we stayed. The ones up higher have fewer or no trees. The picnic tables are covered with adobe structures to keep the sun off.
This pretty park is made up of several small loops. Unlike many TX state parks, the loops may have some sites with water and electricity, some with water only, and some with no hook ups. The campsites on the bluff have water nearby. And one loop is for tent camping.
Trails run throughout Villanueva State Park. A nice easy trail runs through the campground to the Pecos River, which runs through the park.. The trail on the mountain side of the park is more strenuous and the elevation does increase as you climb up the trail. Other trails are also in the park.
The park does have a playground with swings and a slide. It also has structures that kids can climb on.
The town of Villanueva is very small. A store is in town, but it looked as if the supplies would be limited. Be sure you have adequate supplies because the nearest town is probably an hour away.
One word of caution is about the drive to the park. One part of the small road is extremely winding. That part is only about a mile and a half long, but it feels much longer.
A sign on I 40 directs you to the exit and to the park. The Two Tired Teachers enjoyed our time at Villanueva State Park in Villanueva, New Mexico.
SANTA FE, USA - travel shorts
Welcome to 'the city different,' a place that makes its own rules without ever forgetting its long and storied past. Walking through its historic neighborhoods, or around the busy Plaza that remains its core, there's no denying that Santa Fe has a timeless, earthy soul. Founded around 1610, Santa Fe is the second-oldest city and the oldest state capital in the US, and is all but unique in having not only preserved many of its seductive original adobe buildings, but also insisted that all new downtown structures follow the same architectural style. And yet, despite being home to the country’s oldest public building and throwing its oldest annual party, Fiesta, Santa Fe is also synonymous with contemporary chic, thanks to its thriving art market, gourmet restaurants, great museums, upscale spas and world-class opera.
At over 7000ft above sea level, Santa Fe is also the nation’s highest state capital. Sitting at the foot of the glowing Sangre de Cristo range, it makes a fantastic base for hiking, mountain biking, backpacking and skiing. When you come off the trails, you can indulge in chile-smothered local cuisine, buy turquoise and silver directly from Native American jewelers in the Plaza, visit remarkable churches, or simply wander along centuries-old, cottonwood-shaded lanes and daydream about some day moving here.
Santa Fe’s mind-boggling assortment of characters include traditional and avant-garde artists, New Age hippy transplants, Spanish families that have called the city home for centuries, Mexican immigrants, retirees from both coasts, and more than a few Hollywood producers and movie stars. Most are drawn above all by the relaxed attitude, the sense of space, the unbeatable climate and that certain something that gives Santa Fe a singularly alluring essence.
LaBajada part 2 - Abandoned Section of Route 66 in New Mexico Off Road & Aerial Views
Ride with me as I descend LaBajada on Route 66 south of Santa Fe New Mexico. Rugged off road terrain present many challenges and hurdles to overcome for myself and the old adventure truck.
This is the newer alignment that carried Route 66 until 1932. If you want to see the other half of this route that carried National Old Trails, check out this link:

Warning: Language Not Intended for Young Listeners
Day 34
Despite waking up in a happy, optimistic mood, the lack of water became a very scary and frustrating situation later in the day. If I hadn't been angry, I might have laid down feeling sorry for myself and left to shrivel up like my stupid, dried apricots.

So far....
Five years ago, it was a bit frightening when the moving van pulled away from the house we were renting in California. My wife had just retired from her wonderful job and we were counting on mine to pull us through in New Mexico. However, a day or two before the moving van arrived, I was let go along with my entire department due to the growing recession. All of a sudden our plans had been shattered and we were headed to New Mexico without jobs during the worst recession in living memory.
In spite of these worries, and all of the work you have to do when you move to a new location, we still carved out some time to explore New Mexico in between the job search and other things. Even on a tight budget, New Mexico is easy to explore if you're just willing to get out and see it. Even though it is the 5th largest state in terms of square miles, if you're living in or near Albuquerque, the entire state is within your reach. The borders of Texas, Colorado and Arizona are only a half-day's drive or less away which makes day or overnight trips very easy.
If I had to describe New Mexico in one word it would be VARIETY. A variety of culture, of people, of landscapes and experiences. Best of all, this is accessible and available to us without the cost, traffic and issues that you experience when living in more populous states. That alone makes hitting the road easier and easier with every trip.
I struggled when initially putting this video together. To show you all of the pictures over the last 5 years would have resulted in a lengthy documentary. Trying to adequately show you what we've seen in a standard 3 to 5 minute video didn't work as well. So, I hope you don't mind this video which is longer than most but, hopefully worth your time. Enjoy and get out there and explore the world around you wherever you live.

Lesson #48: Dreams of Santa Fe
Even though the Treaties of Velasco listed the Rio Grande as the southern and western boundary of Texas, many Texians did not live any further west than Austin. Because Texians could claim land westward to the Rio Grande, President Mirabeau B. Lamar hatches a plan of westward expansion.
Route 66 Road Trip Stops in New Mexico
New Mexico is the third state in my Route 66 road trip series. My dad and I took 14 days to drive from California to Illinois and we spent most of two days driving through New Mexico. New Mexico is a fun spot for Route 66 stops as it has places like the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa and the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari. Let me know what you think in the comments.
You can click the links below to see each of the videos when they are posted and read about all of these spots at ThroughMyLens.com
