Wanzhou, Wanxian, Chongqing - China Travel Channel
Wanzhou (万州区), formerly called Wanxian, was built from scratch and is a district of Chongqing with 1.7 million inhabitants today. We had the opportunity to visit the home of a retired factory employee. The large roof garden suggests that he is more likely to be among the more privileged residents.
In the video you see older women who practice Tai Chi on the road. Developed as a martial arts, the name Tai Chi is used today as expression for the gymnastics, that serves for meditation and strengthening health. A typical Chinese market offers all daily food necessities, such as meat, fresh vegetables and cooking ingredients listed.
In the local museum, old hanging coffins from two millennia are displayed belonging to the descendants of the Tujia nationality (土家族) with a population of 8.3 million. We saw some hanging coffins of the Tuja already in the valley of the Shennong River. A coffin weights approx. 400 kg and was always built for 2 persons. From the genetic examinations of the decedents one knows that it was usual to give a young man a slightly older woman as a companion. The women showed holes in their head, so one can emanate a violent death. Two models also show the methods as the coffins were brought to the vertical walls.
The steep steps to the ship's landing -- simultaneously a washing place for laundry , or beating the laundry as the Chinese say, show us for a very brief time the true level of the river.

Chongqing in Bird's Eye View
This is a 23-minute video, with fascinating aerial scenes of Chongqing City and its surrounding areas filmed by the Chongqing Broadcasting Group
Chongqing (重慶) has a significant history and culture. In the last decade Chongqing has mushroomed into the biggest metropolis in the world, with a population of over 32 million, equivalent to Canada's total population, and covers an area that equates to the whole of Austria.
Chongqing serves as the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin. It is a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub. Chongqing is home to the longest and busiest monorail line in the world, at 55.5 km and 45 stations. The intricate monorail road that winds through the mountains and urban landscape offering a stunning view of the city.
Before WWII, Chongqing was just a village. During the Japanese invasion in the 1940's it became the temporary capital of China, when Chiang Kai Shek moved from Nanjing until 1949 when he fled to Taiwan.
Chongqing is a major city in Southwest China and is one of the Five national central cities in China. Administratively, it is one of China's four direct-controlled municipalities (the other three are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin), and the only such municipality in inland China. Administratively, it is one of the People's Republic of China's four provincial-level direct-controlled municipalities, and the only such municipality in western China. The municipality was created on 14 March 1997, succeeding the sub-provincial city administration that was part of Sichuan Province. It has jurisdiction over 19 districts, 17 counties, and four autonomous counties, and much of its administrative area, which spans over 80,000 square kilometres (30,900 sq mi), is rural.
The municipal abbreviation, Yú (渝), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. Its abbreviated name is derived from the old name of a part of the Jialing River that runs through Chongqing and feeds the Yangtze River.

Chongqing - China Travel Channel
Chongqing is a direct-controlled municipality and thus equal to Peking, Tianjin and Shanghai. With 33 million inhabitants, it is the gateway to the western regions of China. In only very rare cases you can see a clear sky. Chongqing is thus referred to as the City of Smog. Due to its relatively high air humidity, the climate is often hot and humid. In summer, temperatures often surpass 104° F, and then everything is closed due to the heat wave.
Chongqing shows the dramatic development of China's economy like no other city. Founded more than 4000 years ago, a direct-controlled municipality in 1997, it is estimated that Chongqing will surpass the economic power of Shanghai in 5 years, and surpass Hong Kong in 15 years. In contrast to this, we visited a local fish and meat market, which was not quite up to our standards.
The center of Chongqing, a sea of high-rise buildings, is located on a peninsula on the mouth of the Jialing Jiang in the Yangtze River. The Eling Mountain provides the best view. Chongqing itself is spread out over several hills, which explains why it's also called the Mountain City. During the war against Japan, the small island in the Yangtze served as a land bridge for American supplies to support the Chinese Nationals. Because of this support, the road to Burma could be made free again in battle. The Stilwell Museum – to honor the American general - is a reminder of this event.
Chongqing is the center of the metal-working and automobile industry. Oil and gas also contribute to the economic upswing of the city. With 90 universities, Chongqing is also one of the most important educational centers in China.
Thanks to the hilly landscape of Chongqing, not many bicycles are seen. But there are many shoulder carriers which helps limit the amount of automobile traffic.

Chongqing (Chinese: 重庆; pinyin: chóngqìng), formerly transliterated as Chungking[a], is a major city in Southwest China and one of the Five national central cities in China. Administratively, it is one of China's four direct-controlled municipalities (the other three are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin), and the only such municipality in China located far away from the coast.
The municipality was created on 14 March 1997, succeeding the sub-provincial city administration that was part of Sichuan Province. Chongqing's population as of 2015 is just over 30 million with an urban population of 18.38 million. Of these, approximately 8.5 million people live in Chongqing city proper; Fuling District, Wanzhou District and Qianjiang District are in fact cities in their own right, and along with the city proper constitute a metropolitan area. According to the 2010 census, Chongqing is the most populous Chinese municipality, and also the largest direct-controlled municipality in China, and comprises 26 districts, 8 counties, and 4 autonomous counties.
The official abbreviation of the city, Yu (渝), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. This abbreviation is derived from the old name of a part of the Jialing River that runs through Chongqing and feeds into the Yangtze River. Chongqing was also a Sichuan province municipality during the Republic of China (ROC) administration, serving as its wartime capital during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945).
Chongqing has a significant history and culture and serves as the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin. It is a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub; a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit described it as one of China's 13 emerging megacities.[
