It is the county seat of Florence County and the primary city within the Florence metropolitan area. The area forms the core of the historical Pee Dee region of South Carolina, which includes the eight counties of northeastern South Carolina, along with sections of southeastern North Carolina. In 1965, Florence was named an All-American City, presented by the National Civic League. New Winston Museum - North Carolina's Civil War Monuments
In conjunction with our current exhibition, The War at Home, North Carolina physician, scholar, and photographer, Douglas Butler, presents the fascinating history of North Carolina's Civil War monuments. Going beyond a survey of the state's 109 Civil War commemorations, Dr. Butler's book and presentation look at the shifting perspectives and trends that informed construction of the monuments. North Carolina Civil War Monuments: An Illustrated History (McFarland, 2013), is a carefully researched and fully documented book with photographs of each monument. The War at Home is made possible in part by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
UofSC archaeologists recover three Civil War cannons from Pee Dee River
A team of underwater archaeologists from the University of South Carolina raised three Civil War cannons – each weighing upwards of 15,000 pounds – from the silty sediment of South Carolina’s Great Pee Dee River near Florence, S.C., on Tuesday (Sept. 29).
The two Confederate Brooke rifle cannons (11.8 and 12.25 feet each) and one captured Union Dahlgren cannon (8.9 feet) were artillery of the CSS Pee Dee, a 150-foot Confederate gunboat, a Macon-class gunboat built to patrol waterways and protect the coast.
“The recovery of these three cannons -- the complete armament of a Confederate gunboat -- offers unique insight in the arming and intended role of this warship to contest the Union blockade off the coast of South Carolina and to perhaps engage in high seas raiding against Northern merchant vessels,” says James Spirek, an underwater archaeologist with the College of Arts and Sciences' South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA).
Rare 3D Stereoscopic Photographs of Slavery in South Carolina (1860)
Animated stereoscopic photographs of African American slaves and unidentified white men on plantations near Charleston, South Carolina, around 1860 by photographers Osborn and Durbec. Published as stereoviews, they were one of the only series of photographs to document slavery in the United States before the Civil War.
The building that the slaves are worshiping in is the Zion Chapel which was an Episcopal missionary church.
