CONTINUED DISPUTE OVER ‘PEACE STATUE’ / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
Four days have past since the Peace Statue exhibit in Japan was suspended, but the controversy continues to grow. A global campaign has even emerged encouraging people to photograph themselves posing like the statue. Many in Japan are also harshly criticizing the suspension of the exhibit, saying that the statue of peace, which represents the pain of the victims of Japan's wartime sex slavery, has awakened Japan's democracy.

A woman sitting in a chair with a composed yet firm look in her eyes... Her hands are placed on her lap as a sign of protest. And here's another woman sitting in the same position. The chair next to her is unoccupied. This movement began on social media to protest Japan's suspension of the peace statue exhibit. People from around the world, including Italy and Mexico, have joined in. The purpose of this movement is to criticize the Japanese government for the forced conscription of sex slaves during World War II and its censorship of an art exhibition. In Japan, the suspension of the peace statue exhibit has prompted many to ponder the true meaning of democracy. Some 70 artists participating in this year's Aichi Triennale, where the peace statue had been on display, have issued a statement protesting political meddling by the Japanese government. The artists strongly blasted politicians for their violent meddling and threats that have led to the shutdown of the exhibition. The Japanese media is also intensifying its criticism. The Mainichi Shimbun published an editorial harshly condemning the government for using violence tantamount to terrorism to silence media reports and expressions that disagree with it. Likewise, the Asahi Shimbun delivered the opinion of the Japanese public, which criticized the government and its suppression of free speech.
Comfort women statues removed from Japan's Aichi Triennale & German museum under Japanese pressure
The political and trade tensions between South Korea and Japan are now affecting the cultural fields.
Last Sunday, organizers of the Aichi Triennale international contemporary art festival in Japan halted an exhibition displaying a statue of a girl representing victims of Japan's World War II-era sexual slavery.
Meanwhile, a former comfort woman for the Japanese imperial army has passed away on Sunday.
The number of remaining survivors is now down to 20.
The funeral will be held privately as requested by victim's family.

Japanese officials have removed a statue representing the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery.
The statue was on display for 4 days at a public art exhibition in Japan for the first time.
According to the Aichi Triennale International contemporary art festival, Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga( ), and the governor of Aichi Prefecture, Hideaki Omura( ) told the festival organizers that the statue must be removed.
The festival added that its decision to remove the statue was also based on “terror threats” by telephone and email.
Japanese newspapers including the Asahi Shimbun and the Tokyo Shimbun strongly criticized the statue's removal, saying such threats are not acceptable or forgiveable.
A Japanese fan club made up of famous Japanese artists even requested that the statue remain on display.
The Korean artist who made the statue, Kim Un-seong , condemned the Japanese politicans for attacking freedom of expression.
In addition, two other Korean artists participating in the festival have asked the festival to no longer exhibit their own work, saying they don't want audiences to see their work in this kind of situation.
Last year, another comfort woman statue, about 10 centimeters high, was removed under pressure from Japan at Ravenbruck Memorial in Germany.
According to the Korean civic group known as Korea Verband, which gave the statue to the memorial in 2017, pressure to remove it came from the Japanese embassy.
Japan has ordered the removal of a comfort woman statue before, in 2012, when it called the placement of the statue a political act.

Organizers of Japan's 'Aichi Triennale' art festival agree to reopen 'comfort women' exhibition
'소녀상' 전시 日 아이치 트리엔날레 기획전 8일 오후 재개
In August, Japan removed a statue that represents the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery from its biggest international art festival.... following orders handed down by Japanese officials.
Sixty-five days have passed since its removal, but from today, the statue is back in... and will stay there until the festival wraps up next Monday.
Won Jung-hwan reports.
Following threats from ultra-right Japanese protesters and pressure from the Japanese government,… the comfort women statue at the 2019 ( ) Aichi Triennale international contemporary art festival was pulled out just three days after the festival's opening.
But the exhibition starring the statue will resume from Tuesday and run through the end of the festival on October 14th.
The agreement to return the statue came during a hearing at the Nagoya District Court, held as part of mediation after a demand was filed in mid-September,… seeking a court injunction to reopen the collection.
Aichi Governor ( ) Hideaki Omura, who is also the chairman of the festival's organizing committee, agreed to four conditions as necessary for the reopening.
They include cooperating with security measures, implementing a pre-reservation system and limiting visitors to 30 people per time slot.
The exhibition will also need to provide visitors with an interim report on the background explaining the closure of the art show.
Upon hearing the news, Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura criticized the agreement,… saying it was outrageous to showcase political works at an art festival hosted by the city and other public entities.
The mayor previously sparked outrage when he demanded the exhibition be shut down, arguing the statue could give the impression that Japan accepted South Korea's claim that the women were forcibly taken by the Japanese military during the war.
Ironically, two weeks ago, Japan's Cultural Affairs Agency withdrew a grant for the festival worth approximately 720-thousand U.S. dollars,… saying the Aichi government had failed to provide necessary information when applying for the subsidy.
The back and forth over the comfort women statue has been a sticking point in South Korea-Japan relations,... which have recently deteriorated to a low not seen in years due to disputes over trade and compensation for wartime forced labor.

South Korea expressed regret over the suspended display of a statue that represents the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery at its biggest international art festival.
Stressing that freedom of expression must be guaranteed,... Seoul's culture ministry called for normalization.
Kan Hyeong-woo has the full story.
The South Korean government expressed deep regret Monday over Japan's decision to remove from its biggest international art festival... a statue of a girl representing the victims of Japan's World War II-era sexual slavery.
The freedom of cultural and artistic creation and expression must be respected under all circumstances,... and we hope the removal of this work will be corrected quickly.
The spokesperson said the culture ministry plans to convey its position to the art festival's organizers.
The comfort women statue had been on display at the Aichi Triennale in central Japan since last Thursday... before being taken away on Saturday.
The festival organizers said the decision to suspend the display of the statue was based on terror threats by telephone and e-mail, but claimed it had nothing to do with earlier comments by Japanese officials... in which the mayor of Nagoya, Takashi Kawamura, publicly asked for the display to be taken down... while Japan's Chief Cabinet Secreatry, Yoshihide Suga, hinted at cutting the government's financial support for art festivals.
Asked on Monday if his comments led to the removal of the statue,... Suga said there was no pressure from the government.
Meanwhile... Japanese newspapers criticized the statue's removal.
The Asahi Shimbun said the officials' comments effectively violated freedom of expression and creation,... adding that terror threats are not acceptable.
The Tokyo Shimbun also reported on a statement from the Japan P.E.N. Club - a group of famous Japanese artists - calling for the statue's continued display.
Kan Hyeong-woo, Arirang News
Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura, held a press conference regarding the controversial decision.
Omura harshly criticized Nagoya Mayor Kawamura over his objection to the exhibit, saying such a move is very likely in violation of the Constitution.

STATUE OF PEACE IN WASHINGTON DC / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
A plan to set up a Statue of Peace in Washington DC has been in the pipeline for nearly three years now. During that time, the statue commemorating the victims of wartime sex slavery has been stored in a warehouse, due to persistent protest from the Japanese government. But now that Statue of Peace has come outside in time for Korea's Independence Day.

A truck carrying a Statue of Peace stops in front of the Japanese Embassy. The girl in the statue is looking straight at the embassy. On August 15th, civic activists and protesters, who gathered to mark Korea's Independence Day, called on the Japanese government to admit to its war crimes and apologize to the victims of military sex slavery.
[Soundbite] Japan must apologize! Apologize!
It was in November 2016 when this Statue of Peace first arrived in Washington DC. Identical to the statue placed in front of the Japanese Embassy in Korea, this one was supposed to be erected at a college in Maryland. But that plan was scrapped due to the Japanese government's protest, leaving the statue with no permanent display location. It has been locked away in a warehouse near Washington DC for 32 months before being brought out for this year's Liberation Day. In this event named an outing with the Statue of Peace citizens took photos with the statue and recalled its significance.
[Soundbite] LEE JUNG-SIL(WASHINGTON COALITION FOR COMFORT WOMEN ISSUES, ETC.) : It breaks my heart to see the statue locked away. So it was brought out today to reaffirm people's resolve to put it up again.
The statue was then taken to the old Korean legation in Washington and a church in Virginia to refresh people's interest in the victims of Japan's wartime atrocities. To date, four Statues of Peace have been placed in the United States, including Los Angeles and Southfield, Michigan. But this one in Washington DC has to go back to storage once its short outing is over.
Japanese intellectuals, fellow artists urge re-display of comfort women statue at Aichi Triennale

A petition in Japan has garnered thousands of signatures calling for a major art festival in Nagoya to bring back a statue symbolizing victims of Japan's sexual slavery.
Artists are also demanding for their work at the Aichi Triennale to be taken down in protest of the statue's removal.
Lee Min-sun reports. After one of Japan's largest art festivals removed a statue representing victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery, known as 'comfort women', a group of Japanese intellectuals held a campaign urging the organizers to retract their decision.
The 'comfort women' statue was on display as part of the After Freedom of Expression? section at the Aichi Triennale festival.
From August 6 to 15th, honorary professors and lawyers in Japan collected over 6-thousand 6-hundred signatures on the street and online. These signatures were delivered to the local government along with a statement arguing that the art festival's decision reflects a lack of freedom of expression.
Also, 11 of the participating artists at the Aichi Triennale have asked for their artwork to be removed as long as the display of the statue is banned as a public gesture of solidarity with the censored artists.
A group of artists sent an open letter condemning the decision to remove the statue and criticizing festival organizers for surrendering to irrational threats and political demands that violate freedom of expression.
The artists withdrawing their work include two Korean artists and 9 artists from Europe and Central and South America. Some of their works were the main pieces that were used on the festival's poster and for the opening ceremony.
Meanwhile, a Spanish art collector has decided to buy the very statue that was censored by the festival. The collector will display the statue along with other art pieces that have been censored or suppressed at an art center he will create next year called 'freedom museum' in Barcelona.
A group of art and cultural figures in Korea including the artist of the statue will hold a discussion on August 22nd in Seoul to take a closer look at the issue from multiple angles.

Yasukuni Shrine- Tokyo - 靖国神社 - 4K Ultra HD
Founded in 1869 by the Emperor Meiji, the Yasukuni Shrine is unfortunately known by many outside Japan for being the center of some controversy. Nevertheless, the Yasukuni Shrine is one of Japan’s most famous shrines and dedicated to anyone, Japanese or not, soldier or not, that lost their lives while serving Japan.
Modest in size, Yasukuni is nonetheless an impressive Shrine and once a year holds a fantastic festival called the Mitama Matsuri, featuring around 30,000 lanterns (Mitama). Also controversial for some is the presence of the Yushukan museum that commemorates and documents Japan’s past wars that may not be of much interest for most tourists visiting the place.
Finally, far from any sensible subject, Yasukuni also features a nice little pond filled with many Koi fish that many people seems to ignore. Located just behind the main shrine, this little pond is perfect for anyone who’s looking for some well-earned rest and peace in this sleepless city that is Tokyo.
