Sequim, Washington -
From Wikipedia(
Sequim lies within the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and receives on average less than 16 inches (410 mm) of rain per year — about the same as Los Angeles, California — leading it to give itself the nickname of Sunny Sequim. However, the city is relatively close to some of the wettest temperate rainforests of the contiguous United States. This climate anomaly is sometimes called the blue hole of Sequim.[6] Fogs and cool breezes from the Juan de Fuca Strait make Sequim's climate more humid than would be expected from the low average annual precipitation. Some places have surprisingly luxuriant forests dominated by Douglas-fir and western red cedar. Black cottonwood, red alder, bigleaf maple, Pacific madrone, lodgepole pine, and Garry oak can also be large. Historically, much of the area was an open oak-studded prairie supported by somewhat excessively drained gravelly sandy loam soil, though agriculture and development of the Dungeness valley have changed this ecosystem. Most soils under Sequim have been placed in a series that is named after the city. This Sequim series is one of the few Mollisols in western Washington and its high base saturation, a characteristic of the Mollisol order, is attributed to the minimal leaching of bases caused by low annual rainfall.
The city and the surrounding area are particularly known for the commercial cultivation of lavender, supported by the unique climate. It makes Sequim the Lavender Capital of North America, rivaled only in France. The area is also known for its Dungeness crab. Sequim is pronounced as one syllable, with the e elided: skwim. The name developed from the Klallam language.
Olympic National Park -
From Wikipedia (
Olympic National Park is an American national park located in the State of Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. The park has four regions: the Pacific coastline, alpine areas, the west side temperate rainforest and the forests of the drier east side. Within the park there are three distinct ecosystems which are subalpine forest and wildflower meadow, temperate forest, and the rugged Pacific coast.
President Theodore Roosevelt originally designated Mount Olympus National Monument on 2 March 1909. The monument was later designated as a national park by Congress and President Franklin Roosevelt on June 29, 1938. In 1976, Olympic National Park was designated by UNESCO as an International Biosphere Reserve, and in 1981 as a World Heritage Site. In 1988, Congress designated 95 percent of the park as the Olympic Wilderness.
Hood Canal -
From Wikipedia (
Hood Canal is a fjord forming the western lobe, and one of the four main basins, of Puget Sound in the state of Washington. It is one of the minor bodies of water that constitute the Salish Sea. Hood Canal is not a canal in the sense of being a man-made waterway—it is a natural waterway.
Along its entire length, Hood Canal separates the Kitsap Peninsula from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. The U.S. Navy's Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor Annex, is located on the eastern shore of Hood Canal near the town of Silverdale. Hood Canal has several internal bays, the largest of which is Dabob Bay. Most of Dabob Bay is a Naval Restricted Area, and is used by the submarines stationed at the Bangor Base. Quilcene Bay is an inlet extending northwest from Dabob Bay. Near the north end of Hood Canal is Port Gamble, a bay and a town of the same name.
Hood Canal was named by the Royal Navy Captain George Vancouver on May 13, 1792, in honor of Admiral Lord Samuel Hood of that navy. Vancouver used the name Hood's Channel in his journal, but wrote Hood's Canal on his charts. The United States Board on Geographic Names decided on Hood Canal as its official name in 1932.

Seattle to Bainbridge Island Day Trip!
Who knew a short 35-minute ferry ride could take us to a town with so much to offer? Let’s talk everything Bainbridge.
The whole Maple + Main team ventured across the Puget Sound together. The Seattle ferry isn’t simply a mode of transportation itself, it’s a scenic experience of the surrounding areas and makes for a fun trip.
After arriving in Bainbridge, the team headed to the 5-star rated Good Egg restaurant. Good Egg utilizes fresh produce from the surrounding area. Besides being a great restaurant, Good Egg also puts on fun events. Check out their events page here:
With full bellies, the team was ready to have an exciting day of shop-hopping. Salt House was first on the list where Bethanie found a particularly special item called ‘Roman Salt’. Her son’s name is Roman whom recently finished culinary art school, so of course, she had to get it for him.
90% of Salt House’s product are made in the USA with most being in the PNW. We love that! From small-batched foods to laundry detergent, there’s a product for you.
B.I. Barkery was a highlight for Brea as she found plenty of options for her beloved dog, Bear. This is the perfect spot for dog lovers with specialty items and organic treats.
Bon Bon Collections, specializing in ‘Bainbridge Island Fudge’, is a must visit where you’ll most likely be like Alise and go home with 5 lbs of fudge (she claims it was all for gifting ... yeah, right!). The fudge is made in-house daily and makes your visit that much sweeter! Plan the flavors you’ll want to try here:
Churchmouse Yarns & Teas had a plethora of products that really pulled in each one of our team members. From clothes to dishware to their lavender products — grown in the San Juan Islands — one can easily spend hours just within this one shop. Stay up to date by signing up for their newsletter here:
Seaside Station was our team’s last stop but it’s perfect to be your first stop being right by the ferry terminal. Located in an old gas station even the aesthetic is worth seeing. As a commuter market selling everything from flowers to hoodies, there’s something for everyone here. We loved the Bainbridge Island logo hoodies!
Our time quickly came to a close and we realized how much we didn’t get to see and do. Bainbridge part 2 is a must! Let us know your favorite things to do on Bainbridge and we’ll try them out our next trip.
Happy day tripping!
