A June Visit to the Japanese Garden at Seattle's Washington Park Arboretum
Seattle has several notable Japanese gardens including Kubota Garden and the Bloedel Reserve. One of the best gardens is the Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum. I made this video from images I took from a June visit to the Garden.
Completed in 1960, this 3.5 acre sanctuary is a gorgeous place to walk and do photography. It features stone lanterns, bridges, waterfalls, pleasant walkways, a pond, and an authenic Japanese tea house.

Paddleboarding in Washington Park Arboretum (Near Seattle)
If you haven't, go visit the beautiful arboretum! You can canoe, kayak, or paddle through lily pads, beautiful trees, and more! Truly beautiful! Only a few miles outside of downtown Seattle.
I don't recommend using a dorsal fin as it got caught in some of the logs.

Seattle Japanese Garden
Completed in 1960, the Seattle Japanese Garden is a 3.5 acres garden located in Washington Park Arboretum. This is one of the oldest Japanese gardens in North America and is regarded as one of the most authentic in the United States.
The garden includes over 500 granite boulders, ranging in size from 1,000 pounds to 11 tons. They are arranged to complement a variety of azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, mosses and ferns. The garden features a teahouse, pergola, arbors, decks, bridges and other features.

The 4th Annual University of Washington GIS Day was held on Wednesday, November 19th, 2014, in the UW Libraries Research Commons. GIS Day highlights and celebrates the transformational role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing Technologies.
This session was one part of a Lightning Talk session - an informative, entertaining, and visually intense presentation that burns through the subject matter quickly (5 minutes max). Presentations were lined up ahead of time on a single computer and the visual stream, as well as the speakers, keep coming non-stop as the audience takes in the information as quickly as possible.

Downtown Bellingham Wa Things To Do - One Of The Healthiest Cities In Western Washington
Subdued Excitement In Downtown Bellingham Washington. Downtown Bellingham WA has many restaurants, clubs and bars to keep you entertained or at least distracted day and night. Many club venues have live music at night and on weekends.
The Downtown area near Bellingham's waterfront has an upscale urban village look and feel that has been intentionally fostered to help local businesses compete with other larger shopping corridors like Guide Meridian Ave. and Bellis Fair Mall.
Over the last decade there have been many new high rise condominiums built near downtown giving the area hundreds of residents happy to stroll the streets and frequent downtown businesses.
Night life in Downtown Bellingham is surprisingly lively and diverse perhaps due to Bellingham's College Town status--- Bellingham is home to Western Washington University.
If you're looking for things to do in Downtown Bellingham you might want to consider checking out are Museums including the SPARK museum, home to the awesome Megazapper Tesla Coil.
Bellingham's waterfront is also a popular staging area for vising the San Juan Islands. Along the downtown waterfront you will find whale watching tour operators and charter companies.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival & Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival (2020)
Check out the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival & Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival with us! Today, we're going to check out this festival and all the history surrounding it, then we'll head back down to Seattle and we'll be checking out the cherry blossom trees at the Washington Arboretum Park and also the University of Washington quad. Like much of Washington's population, the cherry trees and tulips aren't native to this state. Nevertheless, they've both become cultural staples of the region and continue to grow every year. There's a lot to see so let's get started.
Now we're in Tulip Town, it's one of the main attractions for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. One of the most striking sights here at Tulip Town is this windmill right here and this windmill is a result of the owner of Tulip Town, his name is Tom De Goede, and in 2003 he visited his family's home in Holland. This windmill is an exact replica of his family's windmill in Holland.
How did a festival like this end up in Skagit, Washington of all places? Well, in 1893 an English immigrant named George Gibbs bought $5 worth of tulip bulbs and he planted them on Orcas Island. A couple of years after he planted them, he dug them up and realized the massive potential for tulip bulbs in the Pacific Northwest region.
In 1899, Gibbs contacted the United States Government about growing tulip bulbs in the area and the U.S. Government said okay, we're interested, so in 1905 they shipped him 15,000 bulbs directly from Holland and that experiment was so successful that the U.S. Government set up their own 10 acre parcel in Bellingham strictly to grow tulip bulbs.
The Bellingham Tulip Festival ran from about 1920 to 1930. The Great Depression came along and kind of stopped the festival, so what the growers did is they moved from Bellingham further down to here in Skagit where we have the festival now.
For many years local growers displayed their tulip bulbs in showcase gardens and then in 1984 the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce established the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Initially, it was a three-day festival and now it's kind of morphed into a month-long event where you got sporting events, a street fair, and you've got art displays throughout the area.
We're here now at Roozen Garden, a famous flower and bulb shop and also one of the major sponsors of the tulip festival here in Skagit, Washington. Roozen Garden was started by the Roozen family and the Washington Bulb Company in 1985. Their business of selling tulips, irises, and a number of other flowers is the largest of its kind in the world. Fresh cut flowers are available for purchase or for shipment anywhere in the United States year round. Roozen Garden is truly one of a kind and much more than a simple flower shop.
We are now heading back into Seattle and we are going to check out the Washington Park Arboretum and the cherry blossom trees, see if they're blossoming there. We are in Seattle's Washington Arboretum Park and behind me, you can see a nicely blooming cherry blossom, so how did these cherry blossom trees get to Seattle? How did they get to the state of Washington? They are not a native plant to here.
Well, in 1912 the Mayor of Tokyo, Japan gifted 34 cherry blossom trees to Washington. He also gifted a number to other states but Washington got 34 and originally those 34 were planted right here in Washington Park Arboretum. Then in the 1960s, 31 of those trees were moved to the Quad and moved to the University of Washington that we'll take a look at in this sequence also, but this is kind of where it all started.
Throughout the park, there are these cool descriptive plaques that give you a little bit of the history of how the trees got here and just the history of the botanical gardens in general. If you're a fan of a little bit quieter area, not quite as crowded as the University's Quad, this is a great place to come.

Seattle Japanese Garden
The Seattle Japanese Garden is a 3.5 acre (14,000 m²) Japanese garden in the Madison Park neighborhood of Seattle. The garden is located in the southern end of the Washington Park Arboretum on Lake Washington Boulevard East. The garden is one of the oldest Japanese gardens in North America, and is regarded as one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in the United States.
Beginning in 1937, plans were made to include a Japanese garden in the Arboretum, and after 20 years of fundraising the project began. Experts Kiyoshi Inoshita and Juki Iida were appointed as designers and completed their plans in 1959. Juki Iida selected William Yorozu as the prime contractor for plants, Richard Yamasaki for stone setting, and Kei Ishimitsu for garden structures. Careful construction began and was completed the next year, 1960.
Construction and design of the garden included bringing over 500 granite boulders from the Cascade mountains, ranging in size from 1,000 pounds to 11 tons. Wrapped in bamboo matting, the boulders traveled to Madison Valley and were arranged to complement a variety of culturally appropriate azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, mosses and ferns. The garden featured a 'Shoseian' teahouse donated by the city of Tokyo in 1959. This original tea house was burned by vandals on April 9, 1973 and reconstructed by Yasunori Fred Sugita in 1980 and 1981. It took eight years of fundraising by the Arboretum Foundation until the teahouse was ready to be rebuilt.
The garden has undertaken several other infrastructure improvements, including a new gatehouse and community meeting room. The Gatehouse project was completed in 2009. The new structure includes a bronze gate designed by local Seattle sculptor Gerard Tsutakawa.

Downtown is the central business district of Seattle, Washington. It is fairly compact compared with other city centers on the West Coast of the United States because of its geographical situation. It is hemmed in on the north and east by hills, on the west by Elliott Bay, and on the south by reclaimed land that was once tidal flats.
